Rabid is another good movie...not as good as Shivers though, but quite suspenseful and trippy. I have a Samsung player. I love the movie but I'm not buying another player just to watch it. I guess I will just wait for an American release. |

Wow, the Criterion, the UK and the German release, all three seem to look completely different from each other in terms of contrast and contrast balance:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/scree...496&position=8 http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ss=1#vergleich I am pretty happy with my region free German release and won't be switching to Criterion. I prefer its color balance, plus it's the only one with the correct aspect ratio. |

Here are some matching screenshots (for the front-page review) from the German BD (Subkultur's release, there two other discs in Germany with different masters from "Black Hill" (Upscale) and "Explosive" Scanners Trilogy (uses the same master as the UK release):

I'd have to agree there. While there's nothing wrong with preferring the look of another release, the fact that this is director approved should mean something. It's not like some instances where a director approves something and then it gets altered by the studio/company via DNR or other things.

Alas, these days, with so many armchairs out there that think they know more than the actual people that made these films, I fear "Creative Intent" becomes a sliding scale that some will use to "fit the bill". "Creator approved" has been, and always will be the final straw for me. |

Don't fool yourself, sometimes films should be protected from their creators. Criterion's Scanners is not a total fiasco, but I prefer the contrast and colors from the german release by Subkultur. The fine details is a bit better on the Citerion release, but only by a by a hair's breadth. Last edited by HansEpp; 06-22-2014 at 03:09 PM. |

Although his films are not in the Collection, you can add George Lucas to this list with the changes he made to Episodes 1-3.

Wow, that's a bad error. I guess both Stereo and Seconds are black and white sci-fi movies!

Actually, the whole "Director approved" thing doesn't necessarily mean anything. If a transfer is a restoration from an interpositive and that interpositive was approved by the director, the movie company can say that the transfer was "Director approved". Of course, I want the picture and sound to be represented and not created so if the absolutely final transfer has been approved then I'd go for that one.
