The slipcover is beautiful; a lovely blend of embossing, matte, gloss, and metallic finishes. They went all out.

Probably my favourite slipcover yet. Excited to watch it!

Will be upgrading because I still only have the DVD, so it's gotta be better than that right I've decided I won't upgrade blus to 4K but will upgrade DVDs to 4K, seems like a fair compromise.

I just finished watching King Kong 4k UHD that came out today on my Sony 4k 55" tv. One word, STUNNING!! Details, color killed the already blu ray copy. The opening city street shots had a lot of depth and detail. The jungle scenes looked like you are on the set with them with very rich blacks and details on all the rocks and walls. Some of the cgi scenes are more noticeable but the dinosaur stampede scene looked amazing w a lot of detail on them and the ground around them. Best Buy, Walmart and Frys have it for $19.99 along with the 4K UHD of Fifth Element that also came out today.

Yeah, plus a three disc case without eco holes. It feels hefty and like a really nice package. Doubt I'll ever watch the extras but happy they're included.

So after reading the feedback I went ahead and purchased and I can attest it does look fantastic. However now that I bought it I'm sort of kicking myself because I'm definitely purchasing the new Kong next week as well.

Not sure I need two King Kong movies lol.

So is the PQ on the new UHD version that was released today much better than the previous Ultimate Edition Bluray? I bought the UHD one today but I want to make sure its worth it instead of doin the standard ultimate edition. Got Em!!

So I'm looking at the 4k uhd right now and it looks pretty bad. Its way too bright in its brights, to the point of being washed out. Itmnight be my tv (2015 Vizio m so no HDR) or player (Xbox S), but the Universal opening logo, before the movie starts, meaning before the menu even showed up, looked stunning.

Default King Kong (2005) (Ultimate Edition) 4K UHD

Has anyone ever gotten a case that is splattered with some weird residue? It completely covers the inside of the case including the floating disc holder. It wipes off, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what this stuff is?

Upon opening:

Here is after I wiped half of the case down:

Posting this here since its the inside of the King Kong 4k case.

So a Vizio with no HDR and an xbox, huh? Without wanting to sound like a complete tool (oops, too late!!) you've got pretty much the worst combination of 4K UHD playback gear right there. I'm sure that some content still looks plenty good but that's due to dumb ****ing luck more than anything.

Im not expecting it to be film quality but at least watchable. I watched Billy Flynn and Allied in 4k and could easily appreciate the video quality. This looks better on my ipad over the UHD.

I've posted about this residue on the inside of cases many, many times in the past on my blu-ray cases. You can wipe it off, but it worries me. Many people say they never notice it. I don't see how you can miss it. I always wonder if that residue can damage the disc over time if not wiped off. I have many cases on my shelf with that residue on the case. It's not exactly greasy, but kind of. Hard to describe really. You can run your finger across it and it leaves a streak in the residue. I've never heard a definitive explanation for what it is and why all cases don't have it, only some.

As I said, it's dumb luck that you're getting some things look better than others. I had the same kind of variances when using an SDR TV and that was with a good SDR conversion, never mind what horrors the xbox is spitting out (which has a documented problem with colour even in HDR mode because of the forced RGB conversion that it does).

I've seen it plenty of times myself and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Perhaps it's something left over from the manufacture of the case, or the heat from the shrinkwrapping process having some sort of effect on the plastic inside?

Thanks for the post! Has anyone ever mentioned what it is or where it comes from?

Yeah, my 2016 model LG LCD 4k set has spectacular 3D and looks fantastic in terms of UHD detail with demo clips, but I don't have a UHD player yet, and I worry that my set won't display HDR as well as I wish it did, since I know it's only rated for around 500-550 nits max, with a pretty limited set of dimming zones.

I can't imagine watching UHD discs without any HDR - it would seem pretty pointless to me.

Also, are people even calibrating for HDR? Are there demo discs/clips out there to do basic adjustments like there is for standard viewing, like the Disney WOW or AVS discs? I have a feeling everyone is getting a different HDR experience. So it makes it hard to know what to make of comments and reviews.

I'm guessing it must be some kind of manufacturing residue maybe? Or like you said, maybe some kind of "sweating" from that particular kind of plastic? I always worry if I should clean off the inside of the case or leave it. I usually leave it, but it does make me wonder if it has any long-term effect on the disc surface. It may not touch the disc surface, but it's darn close to it.

As long as the disc itself has been bonded properly then I wouldn't worry, if it was that toxic to solid plastic then the cases themselves would surely have rotted over time, no?

Good question re: calibration. There ARE workflows in place for HDR (even nascent ones for Dolby Vision are emerging) and I've used HCFR to calibrate the HDR on my own TV, being able to chart and correct the usual things like colour temperature, greyscale, primary/secondary colour errors as well as how the PQ EOTF is actually tracking. For this and other things like setting white/black level I use Ryan Masciola's HDR10 test pattern suite, it costs $25 but is worth its weight in digital gold.

The wider problem is that the calibration controls inside most displays are not geared towards actually adjusting the HDR response curve across the brightness scale, e.g. we've got a gamma slider to bring that up or down but no ST 2084 slider, say. According to Stacey Spears most HDR TVs still process images according to conventional video gamma at their core, so in order to actually show HDR it needs an inverse gamma applied to undo the inevitable application of gamma to the signal, and therefore it's no surprise that most calibration controls aren't geared towards actually correcting HDR as an HDR signal, if that makes sense.

But even if everyone had access to proper calibration there would still be quite a difference across user experiences because of the variances in display types, variances in mapping techniques and also variances in performance from model to model within those ranges. This is what makes HDR reviews such a bust right now.

Outgassing? I saw that all the time with HD DVD cases. Also with BD cases, but not nearly as often.

You aren't going to appreciate how glorious film looks without a proper display. If you like the look of digital film, then it's going to become mind blowing.

I'd almost swear that enthusiasts will replace a thousand discs over and over with new remasters, spending who knows how much, but who won't save up to improve the look of an entire collection.
