No worries I don't mind having a longer version, it would just be nice to have both versions available. Apparently Eureka are including "Police Force" (the US version of Police Story) in the set, so I don't see why they don't have the 2nd film in its HK version too

4K restorations confirmed! Now, my concerns are mainly with PS2:

-Only the 2 hour cut (despite PS1 getting the "Police Force" cut as a bonus)

-Doesn't mention Cantonese mono, only for PS1 (Cantonese mono exists for the 2 hour version via the Japanese laserdisc)

Oh well, I'm just happy that, after over a year of waiting, these restorations are finally coming out. Granted, we may need to go the custom route with PS2, but at least we're finally getting it in true HD.

Now, here's hoping a trailer for this set will drop soon!

I've never seen the full Japanese cut of PS1 before, my first experience of that footage was seeing the extras on the HKL DVD
Is it mainly the opening and ending that are changed?

There are tiny bits of scenes here and there throughout the Japanese version that are extended compared to the HK cut.

I don't mind the longer cut of PS2, but it is a pity they didn't 4k remaster the shorter version also. Two main things I don't like about the longer PS2 is 1) the ending credits don't feature the main theme of PS2 and 2) Maggie Cheung's character seems more retarded in certain scenes..it doesnt look like she really cares about JC or his safety at all :P

Anybody have any dialogues with Eureka? Werent they quite responsive when people asked about the original English dub of Drunken Master, even though they failed to acquire the dub for their release? Maybe they could provide reasons for excluding the shorter cut of PS2?

I don't own it (yet) but I believe there's also a Splendid Blu from Germany that has the original mono. They're the only company I know of that consistently included the original mono tracks on their Blus. Too bad they only did JC films and nothing else (AFAIK).

Hmm I'm confused (or dense), does this mean PS2 wont have mono but only the 5.1 soundtrack? (and other variants)

I'm sure Cantonese Mono (dual mono?) was used on the IVL DVD in the boxset, maybe theyre using that?

That's weird.

No original cut for PS2, but the worthless US video cut for PS1.

Who's making these decisions?

That's a deal breaker for me. No mono, no purchase. Even if it means waiting for a solo release for PS1.

Sounds like a custom job already.... and I won't be paying for it.

Eureka refers to PS2 as being in its 'full 2 hr version' which misleads viewers into thinking that full = uncut and that until now we've been missing something.

Not an easy edit job, but it's doable if Eureka follow this guide.
https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=842
(and have a copy of the HKL at hand for visual reference)

"1. min. In the recapitulation of the first part, the two versions differ: The HK version shows Jackie rolling over the ground, 2 guys try to beat him. He jumps on a car in which another one crashes. Jackie jumps at a man who then flies through the wind shield. Then the scene in the police station: Jackie is about to be handcuffed, he pushes the cop away, grabs a gun and takes uncle Bill hostage. The LD shows him getting a cake smashed into his face and the scene in which he pulls his girlfriend off of a autocycle. There is as good as no time difference, both version durate about 10 sec."

All of this footage can be taken from PS1.

"8. min. After the meeting with his arch enemy, Jackie continues with his duty. He puts on his sun glasses. Afterwards, the yard of the the police HQ can be seen. Jackie comes driving in on his motorcycle and talks to a colleague and his uncle. This is replacedby the talk between the gangsters in the car in the HK version. 60 sec."

An alternate source would be required for this scene (probably SD).

"21. min. Shortly after the the former sequence, this can only be seen in the HK version: A shot of the policemen rebuking people. Some people flee. 5 sec."

Alt. SD source. As above.

"57. min. In the interrogation room, the whole thing with the three girls takes longer. One scene is noteworthy: The interrogated is saying something. The HK version shows Jackie, whereas the speaker can be seen on the LD.53 sec."

Alt. SD source.

"59. min. After the camera zoomed in on the speaker, the LD shows the conrol room and the policemen preparing things for the shadowing. Alternatively in the HK version: The officers get out of a delivery truck. 15 sec."

Alt. SD source.

"59. min. The shadowed person goes down the stairs longer. He gets into a taxi. An officer calls another taxi and follows him. The HK version only features music from now on, in the Japanese version the other sound effect can be heard as well.80 sec."

Original mono soundtrack required.

"60. min. The shadowed waits until the doors of the subway close and then gets in in the last second. Alternatively on the HK DVD: Short shot of Jackie in the HQ. 25 sec."

Alt. SD source.

"60. min. The subway stops, the people get in and out, as does the gangster. The officer follows him. Alternatively on the HK DVD: In the HQ: Jackie looks at a map (this scene is included later in the Japanese version). 27 sec."

Re-edit only.

"60. min. The guy being followed goes down the stairs longer. He takes a taxi again an is being followed by an officer. The taxi stops and the policewoman drives on, telling the HQ via radio. (The map scene is inserted here.) Alternatively on the HK DVD: A short shot of Jackie in the HQ. Two cuts = 49 sec."

Alt. SD source.

"103. min. The outtakes during the ending credits are somewhat different and in another oder. The music is different as well."

Alt. SD source and original soundtrack.

All the other changes can be solved by simple cutting and (more tricky) re syncing of audio from original cut.

My feeling will be that if they're given the Japanese cut then that's what they will put out as they tend to be a bit hands-off with the masters they get for Asian cinema. Have you got in touch with them over this Mark? I worry that they've announced this too late to change anything based on fan feedback.

If that rumor about Janus having the first film, they most certainly would have Part 2. So maybe we need to start emailing Criterion about the importance of including the original HK cut of Part 2 on their release. mulvaney@criterion.com

I got exited seeing the FB page but then realized some of the issues these might have. As always with HK films you have to wait till the discs are out and then add to your shelf of various releases. Still it will be nice to have improvements over the US DD DVDs for these two action masterworks.

Would they listen to me?

I'm not even sure an abundance of e-mails would help.

I'm just being naively hopeful with these posts.

Deep down I think we both know Eureka will do nothing.

I don't know tbh, you probably would have had a better chance of reaching someone if it were a MoC release bue Eureka mght have that PR wall, but it can't hurt I suppose? Have fans raised the issue on their facebook page?

My concern is that if they overlooked the 105 min HK cut then to include it now would mean drastically restructuring the release (be it branching or the alt cut on another disc, etc) and it may be to late for that with the release coming in August.

Yesterday was a complete high once I learnt of the release. Once the details were released, that high subsides somewhat. Don't you just love that emotional rollercoaster ride that one gets from seeing these films being released on dvd and blu-ray? Either way, I will still be picking it up. But, yeah, I just wish that these companies would listen to what we, as fans, want. But, we can be a picky, demanding bunch. Oh well. Guess that I can still get that Japanese release of PS1 if need be.

I'll send them a mail. I can't hurt.

I'll mention the mono issue, too. That's easily addressed.

Do you know what the best address to use is?

Also, I don't do Facebook, but I presume others here might...
