Well, that's an annoying emoticon. Thanks for that...

As for the trilogy release and TDKR being the same price, they won't be on release day. I don't see TDKR going for anything more than $19.99 on release day. The trilogy is priced pretty reasonably though.

Everybody's entitled to their own style of Entertainment

I actualy don't own Batman/Dark Knight (except for Dark Knight's Digital Copy that my Bro In Law gave me), so I'm defintly gon'na put the Triology on my X Mas list, plus I like the idea of put'tin all 3 films in 1 case (Though its a tough call for Harry Potter's series).

KilloWertz I agree that the Collector's set might not slim its price, while Dark Rises stay at the $20 price, my guess though on 1st week sale the triology set could be $25-$30 in the 1st week.

Just buy TDKR alone, and if you're a big Batman fan, wait for the Ultimate Edition in 2013. That is probably what I'll do if the Ultimate edition was truly "Ultimate".

You know, it's always a matter of opinion, but ...
As prices stand now, the trilogy is still a way better value - even if you buy the "ultimate" version later :
- protected in case the "ultimate" is absurdly priced or a rip-off.
- you can always sell or trade for more than just the single movies.
- back-up discs for all three movies/extras should one get damaged.
- you get the small version of a neat book.
- it's only $5 more.

Of course, you could always wait for the 4K version, or whatever comes after that - maybe that'll have even more stuff. Me, I'm going with the trilogy for now. If needed, I can always sell or trade it later. I'll be perusing my new set and enjoying the book while you're waiting for the "ultimate edition" (until the next one anyway). Good luck with that.

KilloWertz : Sorry 'bout that. I only use it to express serious frustration, so ... rarely ...

My thoughts exactly. Why would Warner Bros. announce one trilogy box-set, only to say there's an Ultimate Collector's Edition of that same trilogy coming down the road if there wasn't something special planned for the UCE? The fact that they're telling us in advance that a UCE on the way at the same time they're announcing the release of TDKR and TDK Trilogy box-set means we could be in for new remastered versions of BB and TDK. Look what they did with Casablanca UCE. New 4K master via AVC encode with DTS-HD MA Mono, which beat the old VC-1 encode with DD Mono. I can't think of too many additional features they could cough up, besides retrospective featurettes (looking back at the trilogy in hindsight).

You'er probably looking at more special features, not remasters of the other films. I'd actually bet money on it.

I'm still buying TDKR on Blu-ray in December so I'll be enjoying the movie just the same. Only reason I am waiting for the Ultimate Edition is because I'm hoping for a new transfer for BB. I'm not really a collector, I don't care about the books all that much.

I'm with you on the new transfer thing, I just don't have faith in WB doing one until, at least, 4K hits the streets (if then). Who knows, prices, and therefore plans, could change suddenly (Black Friday?) ... I just didn't like the price comparison. If, at worst, I trade in my first two at BB, that's $10 - so I'm paying $20 for the set and the book. Now, if they had announced new transfers, I'd wait, but ... again, just no faith in WB - despite the great job they did on Casablanca.

i have TDK but not BB. Getting the trilogy saves on shipping for TDKR+BB

Incase anyone in Canada was not already aware HMV will be the exlusive retailer who will sell the TDKR Broken Cowl Blu Ray Limited Edition! Unless you buy it from amazon, no other stores will have this on release day other than HMV for $44.99.

Yep. I don't see remastering of the films until we hit an anniversary for one of the films. I'm thinking 2018 is when we'll see it. That's Dark Knight's 10 year anniversary.

Well, I don't know for sure (It's all speculation, anyway), but I'm convinced that the Ultimate edition will not have new transfers of BB and TDK. Therefore, I will not be getting it next year. I won't be getting the Trilogy boxset, either, because I think the steelbook trilogy will look equally awesome on my blu-ray shelf. I'll hold out for 4K transfers on an anniversary year. Who else is with me?

Yeah, I can't wait that long. This trilogy is one of my all time favorites. Had it not been for the announced UCE for next year, I'd preorder the trilogy gift set right now.

Hell, I still might.

I can't wait years for WB to remaster the first two films. I'd go out of my mind.

Although, come to think of it, if I get the steelbooks of the trilogy now and in the event of a remastering of the first two comes down the pipe in the future, I could just replace the discs in the steelbooks with the news ones.

I could also do that with the UCE as well.

I guess it just depends on how you like to display your movies. Personally, if it's a franchise/series/trilogy, I want the films in one, unifying box set....

I am so with you on this. Unfortunately, I dislike this balancing act I'm doing with this trilogy, along with other series, trilogies, whatever... where you have to anticipate something better in the near or far future, which causes one to decide on what to buy or what not buy now. I'm so pissed that there won't be a boxset for the Iron Man trilogy next year because IM3 will be released by Disney, unlike the first two. For JUST the Dark Knight Trilogy, I'll stick with the steelbooks instead of a boxset.

Yeah, I'm doing that with Hunger Games at the moment. I really want the BD but because this is a planned series, I just know that Lionsgate is going to have a serious box set of the series when it's over. So, I'm aboard the waiting train for that one.

On the other hand, I cracked and bought the Amazing Spider-Man in steelbook because I just wanted that one ASAP, even though I know it's been planned as a trilogy as well. I'll just have that trilogy in steelbook form and let it at that.

With Nolan's Batman, I'm still on the fence as to whether or not more special features are going to be worth the wait, compared to the trilogy set that hits in less than month. I'm pretty burned out on the whole special features aspect of collecting movies. I mean, we've basically seen it all if you've been collecting for a lot of years. Special features don't interest me anymore mainly because they're just usually "pat yourself of the back" kind of insight into filmmaking. Prometheus is the recent, lone exception.

Frankly, after watching the Star Wars Episode I documentary called "the Beginning", all documentaries tend to pale in comparison to the "fly on the wall" aspect of that documentary. That's a documentary on the making of a film that's one for the ages. "Dangerous Days" is another one.

It is clear that Nolan's trilogy won't get one like that anytime soon. At most, we'll get a retrospective documentary either with the UCE next year or in the future. That might be worth the wait but I don't know.

Plus, we have no clue as to the packaging of the UCE either. It could be absolutely fantastic or it could be totally crap that won't fit on anyone's shelf. At least with the trilogy gift set that's about to be released, we know that'll it will fit on everyone's shelf.

Decisions, decisions, decisions...

But, God, do I love this trilogy. I'm not one to buy multiples for a single film/series. But, I might have to with this one.

PS, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I'm not even going to try and collect all of those films in physical format. Because this thing will be never ending, I'm just picking and choosing between the individual films and buying them as HD iTunes digital copies. Only the big, event, Avengers-like films I'll buy in physical format...if they're good enough.

Yeah, with you on that. The only problem is that so many box sets are horribly designed as far as accessing the discs without damage to either you or them - and you don't know until you open the box. Still, I took a chance and went with the trilogy (3 weeks+!), hoping it's cool. As far as new transfers - from WB? - maybe when 4K arrives.

How do you guys feel about these boxsets like Alien or Star Wars, that are thinner and look like books?

The one up is they don't require as much space, and sometimes offer nice little artwork inside..

I've become a big fan of them as well. I have those two, along with the Indiana Jones Collection. I prefer the boxsets over the oversized blu-ray cases (like the Die Hard Collection). I still have quite a few boxsets to buy in order to complete my collection. I will, however, stay firm on my stance that I will not get a Dark Knight Trilogy boxset because I love the way the steelbooks look on my shelf.

Personally, I prefer digibooks or sets where each disc has its own tray and post - like BB's ET DigiBook. The Alien Anthology is absolutely stunning, from slipcover to book, and the the discs in the cardboard sleeves/pages are fairly accessible. The Indiana Jones DigiBook is very nice, but you need to use rubber medical gloves or a thin cloth to pull out the discs - or you'll slip and scratch them (you have to pull hard 'cause they're really in there ). The Star Wars (IV-VI) set is nice - no book but each disc has its own tray. The Ultimate Matrix is very disc friendly - six ultra thin cases in a hard, protective box.

What really drives me crazy are the pile-on-top-of-each-other cases - like the Sanctuary sets. Seasons 1 & 2, especially, tend to release the discs during shipment; and Seasons 3 & 4 have discs stacked on top of each other on the same post. Both versions almost guarantee eventual disc damage. The new Blade Runner DigiBook is similar, but it's more secure - each disc has its own post and only one disc is "buried". Far better are the Justified and Nikita sets, which use interior plastic "pages" which give each disc its own secure post. I could go on, but ... why be fanatical.
