The cool thing about Scream (2022) is that the filmmakers would agree with you. This movie and its characters proudly flaunt that this is a "soft reboot" rehash, just like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Terminator: Dark Fate, Jurassic World, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

These are all just fan films, in essence.

Saw it last night and loved it! Gonna have to see it at least one more time before I can rank it, but I had a blast. I actually quite liked that what I read in reviews was true- Ghostface did feel a lot more vicious this time around.

I can see what people meant by it feeling like a fan film, but I'd say it felt more like a love letter- definitely borrowed some elements from previous films, but also updated things and made it its own. I do wish we got a little more time with the new cast; some felt a little underdeveloped, but I still found myself liking most of them. For a movie that was essentially made to pass the torch, I thought it worked.

The trailers ruined like 90% of the surprises.

Melissa Barrera is the worst acting wise of the new characters and she's in it a lot.

We needed CHASE SCENES. Sam running down a hallway for 3 seconds and Chad being chased outside for 2 seconds don't count.

All of Sidney's scenes were given away in the trailer.

The movie looks good and vibrant and has brutal, entertaining kills. But the new cast needed more scenes. We're Scream fans, we can handle another 10 minutes. There's practically an hour or so that went by without seeing the new teens. Sam's storyline isn't interesting enough to carry the movie. Supporting characters are the ones doing the heavy lifting.

The motive is something every Scream fanfic writer thought of before.

All the locations were dull and stuff we've seen before. GIVE US NEW LOCATIONS!

This movie did provide the franchise's funniest scene though.

I just hate that the marketing spoiled everything and the director's lied through their teeth all year-long because Reddit leaks from 9 months ago were accurate.

Ranking:

Scream
Scream 4
Scream 5
Scream 2
Scream 3

I watched all the trailers but barely paid any attention. When I walked into the movie, I was basically 100% unspoiled...

I do wish they had not revealed
[Show spoiler]the final location
in the trailers, though. You can tell by how it was filmed that it was intended to be a "WTF??" moment for the audience.

The ending was pretty lame. Why didn’t they call this Scream 5

Have you watched the film?
[Show spoiler] It's pretty much obvious why they didn't call it Scream 5. They even joke about it.

Just got back. Liked it, didn’t love it. Not a patch on the first two but roughly on par with Scream 4 for me.

The new generation of characters just didn’t have the charisma of the older gen. Kills were brutal and well done but for the afore mentioned reason, I didn’t fully connect with it. Several characters felt like cardboard cut outs.

I felt the film could have done with its own fresh soundtrack too as I loved the soundtrack to the original Scream and Scream 2.

The third act was well done but it’s not something I’m in a mad rush to see again soon. As a Scream fan, I’m slightly underwhelmed. Some enjoyable stuff but just didn’t do it as a whole for me.

No sequel is ever going to match the first one because it was so fresh and spunky, but I’m feeling the franchise needs to rest now.

3/5

How soon do you think they will release Scream 6? Scream 2 came out within a year of the original, I guess that’s probably a long shot?

Depends how much it makes overall.

It has a $24M budget + marketing.

If it can make $40M+ on the 4-day weekend I think we'll have Scream 6 by 2024.

The box office weekend will answer that question.

How violent is it? Is it super gory/violent/bloody? I’m hoping it’s on the Halloween Kills level but I know these movies aren’t quite like that.

You feel the kills, let’s put it that way. Quite brutal.
