There's no supposedly about it, it did gross over a billion worldwide.

Who showed up? The opening weekend was similar to the other Marvel openings by me.
Sorry I misunderstood the post.

Oh man Trolls 3D is a real movie? I thought they were insulting me.

I will delete that.

There is nothing that was remarkable about the opening for Captain Marvel. It had a similar turnout at my theater as Winter Soldier. Nearing opening day in a 3D show. So to me it overperformed, big time.

I wonder how much of the poor 3D performance is due to audiences not wanting 3D and how much of it is due to lack of 3D screenings. It's a bit chicken and egg, I realise.

There are very few standard 3D screenings of Onward near me, and they are pretty much all at inconvenient times. If it weren't for the reasonable number of 3D 4DX screenings in many of the Cineworlds (and not everyone likes/wants to pay for 4DX), it would be incredibly difficult to see this in 3D, and that's in London. My local Empire (Sutton) had a fair number of 3D D-BOX screenings listed, but they've all been changed to 2D.

As someone who enjoys 3D, seeing movies in 3D has become a chore. I have to see the movie in theaters like the first week of release. My local cinemas are down to only TWO 3D showings per movie. If I miss the movie in its theatrical run, it more than likely doesn't get an American Blu-ray 3D release. If it does, it's expensive AF and if I want the slipcover I have to get it right away from Best Buy as an exclusive. They never go down in price, and if I don't order the movie right away, I have to pay someone on eBay $50 and hope the slipcover isn't damaged. I'd rather studios reserve the 3D for a select few movies every year, so I wouldn't have to experience this fomo.

I blame it on the gluttony of the early 2010s. Studios released every movie in 3D, when some really didn't need it, and audiences became fatigued. Did we really need films like G.I. Joe in 3D?? It should have been used sparingly for event films as opposed to every new weekend release.

Very true. That and bad hastily done conversions, forcing people to watch 3d only at prime times etc.. The studios shot themselves in the foot when it came to 3d.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation was pretty good in 3D! I mean the mountain side swordfight was awesome.in 3D!

Yeah GI Joe Retaliation was enhanced considerably by the 3D conversion.

I would guess that now, with COV out there, showings may drop to zero. People may be more hesitant putting on glasses that others have worn. Just a guess.

The budget for G.I. Joe Retaliation was in the region of $130-155Mil, if that's not the budget of an event film in your opinion, then how much does a movie have to cost to deserve a 3D presentation? Also movies have cost far less and got 3D presentations, so what exactly are your criteria here?

It depends on the manufacturer and theater system, but Real D glasses are designed for single use only and are recycled (not that it would fully help when people are in a panic, but those people will probably avoid theaters entirely). Of course the whole industry might shut down for weeks or more, in which case who knows what will happen to everything when releases start coming out again.

Black Window will hopefully be in 3D, I agree. I believe it will, but we'll see.

I hope studios continue to support 3D in theaters and at more often for home, but theaters aren't helping by reducing the 3D showings down to 1 or 2 per movie on opening week many times, if at all. That's why it's important to see a film in 3D in theaters on opening week if it's a film you really want to see.

In the UK, or at least in London, Cineworld seems to be one of the few chains that still put on a reasonable number of 3D screenings. Odeon, by contrast, is terrible for this; if I had wanted to see Onward in 3D at an Odeon yesterday there was a morning screening in Belfast and that was it!

The reports about Cineworld's future in light of the coronavirus concern me; I can just see Odeon snapping up all their venues and further reducing the number of 3D screenings in this country.

I saw Onward in 3D 4DX last night (Cineworld Wandsworth) and there were 6 of us in the screen.

Thanks. I imagine a lot of those have been delayed with all of the concerns of a plague. I don't know what to expect with all of the theaters closing in many states for awhile. Hopefully when it warms up in May, everything reopens. Of that list, I'm interested in seeing the following, so not a lot in terms of 3D in 2020. I'd be surprised if 007 No Time To Die is ever in 3D. That seems unusual.

Monster Hunter from Paul WS Anderson of the Resident Evil 3D movies, probably just converted the film. If he edited it in rapid fire mode as he did with the horribly edited Resident Evil Final Chapter 3D, I'll avoid it entirely.

More New release dates as of April 2020
[Show spoiler]due to the world plague
:

24th July - Mulan
14th August – Wonder Woman 1984, The Secret Garden
4th September – A Quiet Place: Part II
16th October – The French Dispatch
6th November – Black Widow
12th November - No Time To Die
23rd December – Top Gun: Maverick
12th February 2021 – Eternals
5th March 2021 – Ghostbusters: Afterlife
19th March 2021 – Morbius
2nd April 2021 – Fast & Furious 9
7th May 2021 – Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings
2nd July 2021 – Minions: The Rise Of Gru
30th July 2021 – Jungle Cruise
5th November 2021 – Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness
28th February 2022 – Thor: Love and Thunder
8th May 2022 – Black Panther 2
8th July 2022 – Captain Marvel 2
29th July 2022 - Indiana Jones 5

That list is interesting, but a question is, with the constant extensions of all this lock down business, will movie theaters slowly reopen in certain areas and show new movies, while other areas remain closed and unfair? Or will they all reopen at the same time as a chain of theaters?

This is a time when a theatrical release being simultaneous with a digital home release seems more likely these days, despite movie theaters understandably being against it, since people watching films at home instead of in theaters will hurt theater income. Movie theaters are a major reason stereo 3D is given to a film. If it was straight to video, the chances a studio would want a home stereo 3D conversion are less, considering the lack of support from TV manufacturers in the US for 3DTVs.

Will those who are fearful even want to return to theaters, forced to be wearing a mask, with likely much more limited seating allowed per theater for the sake of anti-social distancing? I'll return to theaters, but I'm concerned many audiences won't. I hope I'm wrong
[Show spoiler]and that this isn't the start of a new world order of things with all this lock down stuff every time a new virus appears, where only "essential" businesses are allowed to operate as fear and safety take over. The rapid change is alarming.

I don't think we can live in fear of another virus or we might as well not be here. People will return to normal, even now people can’t stay in even when they are being told their lives are at risk.

Where are you finding info about these two being in 3d? I can't find anything about it.
