The sound on the original set that I have is pretty good. But I'd sure like to watch TFA in Atmos!
The Atmos track for TFA on Disney+ is really great. The Rogue One Atmos track not as much.

I still have to check out TLJ Atmos track on Disney+ to see if it's changed at all from the disc. Unfortunately it's probably the same.

Nope. The prequels and sequels are bad, and the CGI tainted original trilogy is garbage.

Probably not. It's really my wife who'd be interested in having all of the SW films in the collection, and we already have everything on BD (and UHD for the two already in that format). I mentioned to her that this set was coming out, but I think she's fine with what we already have.

I really wanted to check TLJ Atmos streaming version but Disney+ isn't available here and I have none of the supported devices for Atmos so even with VPN, it didn't work during the 1 week trial.

It is funny how Disney with unlimited resources couldn't make a PC App like Netflix did with excellent compatibility.

Disney just doesn't care.

Trinnov Altitude owners over at AVS have been analyzing the Atmos tracks for all the SW films as available on Disney+, albeit in lossy form.

They are fair to middling in terms of object utilization and surround envelopment (they are basically 7.1.2 Atmos tracks with blink and you'll miss it spot positional effects beyond the bulk of the activity being in the Top Middle for overhead effects with little to no utilization of the speaker positions beyond the base 7). The bass on the special edition trilogy is about the same as before on the previous Blu-ray's, so they haven't been neutered even further as far as LFE.

So, they're on par with some of the lesser Atmouse efforts. Nothing spectacular or stand-out in any way. FilmMixer on AVS Forum was one of the mixers on Amazon's Carnival Row TV show and its Atmos track and it is far and away better than ANYTHING Disney has ever done in terms of immersive surround. FilmMixer makes sure the tracks are not locked and instead utilize the full 24.1.10 capabilities of home Atmos.

A TV show on Amazon gets better treatment than big budget Disney movies.

I haven't checked out the OT or prequels yet but that's not the case with The Force Awakens. With my 7.1.4 Atmos setup I am getting discrete effects with all 4 of my overhead speakers. A good test for this is the first chase scene when Rey pilots the Falcon with tie fighters chasing, it is really a showcase of positional effects with Atmos.

I'm going to buy all the discs, for sure... Day One... but holding out to see what the different packaging options are. I currently have my saga divided into trilogy sets, in three multi-disc cases. I really like the way that works out on my shelf. It also allows me to place SOLO and ROGUE ONE in the "Imperial Era" multi-disc case, along with the original trilogy. I'm hoping this new wave of 4K discs is similarly offered as three distinct trilogy sets. I don't care about booklets or even discs full of extras; I only care about the movies.

Yup, it is laughable.

Netflix also has very good rules for Atmos mixing for their titles. I guess maybe Disney doesn't have guidelines like these and this is why their mixes are all over the place, Most are bad and some are good.

These are the guidelines for Netflix regarding Atmos mixes:

7.1.2 base Atmos tracks react differently with 4 overheads. The renderer tries to phantom the Top Middle content between the two adjacent pairs, so sound comes out of the Top Front and Top Rear even if the objects aren't meant to be there if you had the speakers the objects were meant to come out of.

That is why the analysis at AVS was based off the renderer speaker output scopes on the Trinnov and not what you may or may not hear.

Interesting, do you have a link to that discussion on AVS? I'm still new to Atmos but it sounds like 4 discreet overhead channels with The Force Awakens. A tie fighter will come in from the top rear left channel and then pan forward to the top front right for example.

The Force Awakens has a few more specific object cues than many of the other Disney Atmos mixes for the Star Wars films.

There's so much stuff going in the Official Dolby Atmos For The Home and Trinnov Altitude threads to get into the weeds, but the discussions are a few dozen pages back from the latest posts.

Basically, there is a bed of 7 channels and two Top Middle objects (recreating the 9.1 bed from the commercial version) and then additional speakers around and above you that may or may not be addressed with additional positional sound objects that are either fixed or can move about in an X/Y/Z speaker grid. The total speaker layout for home Atmos is 24.1.10. 24 ear level, one LFE channel, and 10 overheads. The more discrete speaker outputs that can be rendered, the more expensive the surround processor.

It's up to the sound mixers and engineers to determine how little or how much of that gets utilized. As far as Disney is concerned, they're often towards the bottom of the list of studios when it comes to using Atmos to its fullest potential.

Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049, Shazam!, Fury, Godzilla 1998, Doctor Sleep, The Matrix, and Gravity (Diamond Luxe Edition) are just a few of the better Atmos mixes and none of them are from Disney.

The set? No. Because I buy 4K movies individually... even if the cost is higher overall for a franchise, buying them in order of importance means i get the ones I want faster in my budget.

This was done with Harry Potter, and is currently with Jack Ryan movies.

It 100% depends on the bonus features. I don't care about watching the versions that Disney provides for the OT. I'll download the fan restorations based on these. I'll never watch the prequels again and I can buy the sequel movies separately.

So it will depend on what they include for the bonus discs.

Dunno how I forgot Rogue One. That and The Force Awakens would be incredible in Atmos and are the two I'm most looking forward to!

Ideally, we'd be getting a comprehensive set of bonus features, but I'm not exactly holding my breath on that. I'm hoping for at least a good chunk of the following:
  • The old-school documentaries (ex. The Making of Star Wars) from the 2011 Blu-ray set
  • The deleted scenes from the 2011 Blu-ray set
  • From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga
  • The trailers, TV spots, and Empire of Dreams documentary from the 2004 DVD set
  • The documentaries from the prequel DVD's, such as The Beginning and Making of a Minute

Yes. Preorder was in the first day. I'm buying because it's Star Wars. Also have the 2011 blu-ray box along with Harmey's Despecialized versions and 4K77 & 4K83.

Pretty sad when a TV show on amazon has better sound than a UHD disc from a trillion dollar company. What a horrible company, at least as far as physical media is concerned. Sooooo glad they bought Star Wars and Fox. Wonderful.

Yes! Depending on if there are exclusive bonus features. I tend to stay away from box sets, but if there’s exclusive content, I prioritize that.

If the individual releases have exactly the same content (a 4K disc, a Blu-ray Disc, and a features disc) I’ll probably just go with those... especially because they’d be a lot more affordable through the Disney Movie Club.

I have this preordered but waiting on the specs to keep the pre order or not. Anyone got an idea when we can expect the specs on this?
