Jennifer Love Hewitt was actually the original choice for Carmen Ibanez in Starship Troopers, as I said a year or two ago in her appreciation thread. Edward Neumeier actually designed the character for Mrs. Hallisay.

But Paul Verhoeven deemed JLove too young for the role, as she was a tender 17 at the time of filming in late 1996. And he didn’t want to wait until she was old enough. So he went with Mrs. Phypers instead.

Unlike Denise, who used improv to smile and almost laugh on queue every time a fellow soldier got killed, Jennifer would’ve used improv to cry on queue every time a fellow soldier got killed. In Jennifer Love’s words, crying’s the human thing to do when people get killed, not smiling. And especially not almost laughing or laughing.
