We watched the iTunes digital last night. It's a gorgeous transfer, start to finish. The lively surround sound creaking and groaning of the ship during the sinking had our cat doing double-takes in all directions. Her head and ears got quite the workout.

It's been quite some time since we watched the film. I was reminded that there isn't a spot when you get a really clear view of the ENTIRE sketch of Rose. Still, we couldn't resist pausing the film during a couple of shots of the sketch to compare the image to the lithograph copy we purchased back in 1998. An exact match, of course.

I've decided to cancel the 4K Blu-ray order and wait for the price to drop. Once it falls by $5 or more, I'll add it to my collection.

Mark

Watching on Disney+ in the UK now. 4k Dolby Vision. Very filmic. All worries of DNR have been eased for me. Lovely grain!

Edit: Weird. After leaving D+ and going back in this and Aliens have now gone back to SDR!

The difference is generally far more noticeable in darker scenes and grainier movies. If a movie has very fine grain, or if it's digital, and you are showing a bright scene, streaming can often look perfectly fine.

Hell, this freaking YouTube video demonstrates this perfectly. It looks fine in the digitally shot material, but starts to choke on the grain whenever actually showing film footage, though it's not bad for YouTube standards, and will not be noticeable if you sit very far from the TV. It also helps that The Man Who Knew Too Much, being a VistaVision production, is not very grainy.

Glad it's a good transfer, can't wait for the higher bitrate disc to come in soon

I mostly agree with this but I do find some studios (looking at you Paramount) tend to really compress their streams to the point it does make a marked difference with the eventual UHD release. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a prime example where the stream didn't look great but the eventual UHD disc looked excellent. Perhaps they are authoring their stream with Paramount+ in mind and create one file used for all services?

Also agree with other posters who have said streaming still has a ways to go in better handling dark scenes and heavy grain, though I have seen improvements in this area recently.

Good luck with comparing grainy films like Mulholland Drive

Which provider did you use to watch it? There is really no such thing as "the stream" for any given movie. It depends on the provider. Apple, for example, typically receives high quality masters in ProRes format and then generates a set of encodes for their various streaming resolutions etc. You also get the Apple-encoded stream if you watch the movie through the Apple TV Paramount+ channel, while you get a different (lower-quality) stream if you use the Paramount+ app.

Nope. You can still see the camera operator's reflection, as well the camera and film magazine.

Does anyone know if the Atmos track is derived from the original track that was used for the 1998 DVD or is it ported from the Blu-ray remix?

The Atmos mix could be new from the multitrack recordings

Is that confirmed and is that a good thing? I would think that is right?

Knowing Cameron, it's strange he hasn't removed that. There's no way he doesn't know about it. And he is a bit of a perfectionist.

Because it would probably ruin the scene with the digital alteration.

"Ruin"? One would think technology has advanced enough to digitally remove the thing with no single issue at all. It's been done before

Meaning you can tell it was digitally altered as it is a reflection. Like the snake in Raiders, while the removal is done well… you can tell it was digitally manipulated.

"A Few Words" from RAH on Titanic. Sounds promising!
