It's been confirmed by Josh Boone that the New Mutants do exist in the world of the X-Men, but there won't be any appearances of X-Men characters.

"We were lucky. They really did want it to be different than other stuff. They really pushed us to keep it separate from X-Men stuff, even though it’s set in the X-Men universe. We had early drafts that were supposed to be in the same timeline as [X-Men:] Apocalypse, so it was originally going to be set in the ’80s. Originally, Professor X and Storm were in it, and Storm very much played the Alice Braga role. Over the course of months, a new studio head came in, they said they didn’t want any X-Men movies to take place in the past anymore, as if that was the reason that Apocalypse was bad. [laughs] So we were put in the position where we kind of rewrote it to be set now in a nebulous [point in time], because nobody knew how the movies had turned out. Dark Phoenix wasn’t out yet. Yeah, it’s there – they talk about Professor X and those things, but it doesn’t have cameos from anyone or anything like that."

Director Josh Boone confirmed Disney’s theatrical contract commitment with Fox films:

Early on in Collider’s chat with the New Mutants director and cast, he asked whether there had ever been a discussion with 20th Century Studios to release New Mutants on Disney+ or Hulu, two streaming platforms under the Disney umbrella. Boone’s explanation on a streaming release isn’t currently being explored makes total sense. As he told Collider, “With most movies, you sign contracts that guarantee a theatrical release, so it needs to open to ever go digital in the first place. We just, too, would like to see people to see it in the theater. But it needs to obviously be at the right time when it’s safe to go back.”

Not if this is in modern times, which Boone has basically confirmed that it is. He said it was originally going to be set in the ’80s, after Apocalypse, but now it is not. So whether you are looking at Colossus in the X-Men movies or in the Deadpool movies, he's still older.

Yeah, that's true, but Boone also confirmed that there's a lack of technology and reference points, and the whole background of the movie is "nebulous" --- so it can be placed wherever you want.

Fact is, in the movie, the guys don't know what the "mutants" are, they have never heard the word before in their lives.

Just because it was removed from international trailers doesn't mean that date won't stick for the domestic release. Disney could also have done this to prevent an uproar over some places being able to show it and others not so it's "Coming Soon" everywhere. How soon is up to local and state governments.
