20th Century Fox The New Mutants (2020)

Fox Mints ‘The New Mutants’ X-Men Spinoff; ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ Helmer Josh Boone To Direct

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Fox has closed a deal with The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone to co-write and direct The New Mutants, a standalone spinoff that expands its X-Men movie universe. The series, already part of the X-Men Comics universe, introduces a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers. Boone will co-write with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner.

It is not surprising that the studio would want Boone to grow into bigger things. He came out of nowhere to direct The Fault in Our Stars, an adaptation of the John Green novel The Fault In Our Stars. The book had a rabid youthful fan base, but Boone showed a strong feel in bringing youthful pathos to the screen, and while Shailene Woodley was already an emerging star, both Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff broke through as new stars on that film. The result was a $12 million budget Fox 2000 film that grossed $307 million worldwide. Boone became a hot director right away off that success, and among the projects he has been linked to are adaptations of the Stephen King novels The Stand and Lisey’s Story. He’s also been mentioned as one of the directors Marvel and Sony have been sweet on for the live action Spider-Man franchise reboot. Next up for him is The Vampire Chronicles at Universal, a reboot based on the Anne Rice novels that were turned into Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The Stand would go after, so The New Mutants is a couple years away.

Said Kinberg of the X-Men expansion with Boone: “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

Fox has done well mining its X-Men franchise. Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool with Tim Miller directing, and Bryan Singer is directing X-Men: Apocalypse for 2016. James Mangold and Hugh Jackman are also doing another Wolverine installment with Hugh Jackman. Behind those is Gambit, a movie that has Channing Tatum attached to star. Those are the current X-Men priorities but it is proactive of Fox to keep new films in the pipeline and to reengage Boone, who’s repped by CAA and attorney Gregory Slewett. Gwaltney is also CAA.

This will keep us in the realm without tiring it out. Especially since Jackman is outtie.

Might work. Problem with the X-Men movies is that really they should have been called "Wolverine and the X-Men" since Wolverine is such a large part of them. Having a spin-off without him might not draw in a large audience but it will also keep the budget down which would work in its favor. As long as the story is good, this will probably do well.

I was wondering when they were going to expand the X-Men universe... took longer than I thought would to start working on something like this.

Finally.
Was wondering when/ if this would happen.

Now, Fox, please...

Do it right and do it -DARK-, as it should be.

Tough to say. Can't see them making it too dark as that will limit their audience. I see it PG-13 like The Wolverine at best. But then again, they are doing an R rated Deadpool so you never know. Guess it depends on how closely they want to associate it with the X-Men films. If they want some form of crossover, I think we are stuck with PG-13 but if they want it to be a standalone and only minimal ties, maybe they will bite the bullet and go for the R rating.

The director of The Fault in Our Stars + Young mutants? Definitely will be PG-13.

I'm not saying anything against this movie at all - obviously, we have nothing to go on besides writer and director. I'm just saying I can already "see" the kind of movie this will be. I don't think it will be particularly dark and will lean more towards the tween audience, probably.

Totally down with this. Love Fox's X-Men stuff overall, very interested in seeing them expand more past the core series.

A new X-Men film by the guy who did Fault in Our Stars? Count me in. That film surprised me a lot last year. I'd like to see what he can do here. Can't wait to see what he does with his multi film adaptation of The Stand as well.

You're doubting the Director of the teens with cancer movie can do dark? I have nothing but faith in the guy. But to your point, tweens are watching some grim, depressing stuff in their sci-fi movies these days. So I think he's right for the teen angst side of the characters.

DEADPOOL is already getting his own movie first before X-FORCE.
I'm hoping this is The New Mutants team from the 1980's and not X-FORCE. Already mentioned in one of my other posts FOX needs to have a cohesive X-Universe of films with a bunch of the various teams. Honestly I'm also hoping for X-FACTOR, EXCALIBUR (Is Captain Britain both MCU and FOX?), X-FORCE, whichever they want.

I'd be interested in this. It would be nice to see Fox use new/different characters.

I like the sound of the lineup, their powers are so different from the X-Men. It will help in making the film feel fresh like Deadpool

I wonder how they will present Warlock. He's actually an extraterrestrial lifeform. He may be the character Fox needs to introduce alien worlds to the X-Men Cinematic Universe. If the audiences accept Warlock, Fox may push for the Shi'ar Empire and the Imperial Guard, as well as the Starjammers, would lead to a much more epic Dark Phoenix Saga movie.
