Hobo with a Shotgun

82 minutes

Year: 2011

Director: Jason Eisener
Writer: John Davies, Jason Eisener & Rob Cotterill
Starring: Rutger Hauer, Brian Downey, Molly Dunsworth, Nick Bateman & Gregory Smith

Rushed home from work eager to watch my latest blind buy: Hobo with a Shotgun.
Once it ended however, I wasn’t so eager to admit I spent $12.99 on this

It’s… alright. I have no idea what a “grindhouse / exploitation” flick is or what that even means. Never saw… Grindhouse or Planet Terror or anything else that people always mention when Hobo is mentioned. So I really didn’t know what to expect or anticipate except mindless mayhem and apparently, lots of blood.

Pacing is all over the place. One minute loud crazy industrial music and chainsaw sound effects as the screen gets filled with blood and annoying screaming and the next the Hobo is telling a touch story about how a young woman shouldn’t be a prostitute anymore. Weird stuff.

It reminded me a lot of any Rob Zombie music video. My dad used to watch those a lot, so I know very well what they looked like and remember them very well. Color palette, random crazy goofiness… that’s what Hobo has and that’s what Zombie’s music videos have.

Biggest error for Hobo though is that there are no jokes. None. I listened to every line of dialogue and it wasn’t just me “not getting” the humor, I simply didn’t find a single joke in the 82 minute run time. They didn’t even try. The film was written almost to be taken seriously, yet just was hilariously violent and over the top and cruel and unusual. But no jokes. Very weird… almost all films have a joke SOMEWHERE. Maybe there was one. And I just couldn’t see it because all the blood got in the way

Honestly, I bought this because of the name of the film and at least it comes with a wicked sweet slipcover! sadly however, the movie didn’t offer me a whole lot. I know for a fact my friends will hate it. And I have no idea when I’ll get the urge to watch it again, but it won’t be very often and won’t be soon.

Maybe it’ll grow on me?

I mean, it wasn’t awful. Sure, the 82 minutes kind of felt like 182 minutes (bad sign) and the action was entertaining enough to some extent. But wicked rollercoaster pacing (that wasn’t good) and the average at best acting mixed with zero jokes made Hobo fall short of what it could have been. Mind you, I didn’t mind the senseless action, gore and violence, but a film can’t succeed on JUST that alone. But for some I guess it can.

Nice review, Bearcat. Glad you seemed to have found more enjoyment in it then I did. I honestly didn't enjoy much at all and kept finding myself wondering when it would end. Not a good sign...And I like the Grindhouse movies a lot. But this one just didn't do for it me.

I just got done watching this. I usually like these kinds of movies as well. I have seen Planet Terror, Machete, Drive Angry, and now this. This is the only one I can say I didn't like. I'm glad I didn't blind buy it.

I will say a couple of good things about it. Rutger Hauer was about the best choice they could have made for the role and there were some good one-liners.

I see this is getting some positive reviews (even some glowing ones) from some Blu-ray websites. I'm not going to say they're wrong as that is their opinion, but I'm also surprised.

Looks like we are pretty much in the same boat in regards to Hobo with a Shotgun.

thanks man

i didn't really anticipate loving it, but i guess i was just anticipating it being overly violent and goofy, but there just wasn't anything goofy to be found. maybe that's how the genre is though? i don't know

i can enjoy stuff like Drive Angry because the humor is terrific and well placed, but Hobo was missing that and didn't feel special or really unique at all, while it certainly seemed like it was trying i just felt this was very much a low budget film trying to shock you more than anything

is he the drunk guy that gets into the fight in Superbad? ("it's you! McMuffin!" ) gonna have to check. if not, that guy would have been pretty good too i think.

yeah, read a lot of reviews worshiping the film. i guess it's just a matter of taste and a love of the genre mixed with what Hobo gives ya. even though you and Walt dislike it but like the genre... so... who knows lol

No, Rutger Hauer is a much bigger guy than the McMuffin guy. I am 100% sure it isn't him.

Yeah, I've got nothing in regards to trying to explain how some people love it but me and Walt don't like it much at all. Oh well. I'm glad some people are enjoying it at least.

Korea owns the revenge genre. No question about it.
It's got both the theatrical and international cut, plus it's limited edition. I really love the film so I got no problem shelling out that much. I don't know what cut is in the NA version though (maybe just the international/US cut).

I've only seen Chungking Express (love it too), and In the Mood for Love (didn't like it at all). But Fallen Angels sounds interesting, plus it's got Leon Lai (who was awesome in Comrades and Going Home). I'm gonna check that one out, thanks Steve!

Fallen Angels has a lot of Chungking references. Similar feel too.

That's exactly how I felt too. Grindhouse movies always sort of knew what they were to me, and always had some sort of goofiness or fun...This didn't. It was just over top violence for the sake of shocking people, and little else. I mean come on,
[Show spoiler]killing a group of a kids by lighting them on fire in a bus?
Really? That was incredibly unnecessary...

I actually came close to turning the movie off after what happened in your spoiler, then there was probably a decent moment with the Hobo and Abby, which is about all that kept me from turning it off.

That was the part that made me realize how much I didn't like the movie. To me, that was just tasteless...Ugh...Never again.

The joke's on you, dude!

I never really attibuted Grindhouse flicks or gorefest movies with comedy. Even though "Planet Terror," "Machete," "Dead Alive," etc are all self-aware and have a lot of jokes and cheesy lines and stuff, I think the more original Grindhouse pictures are unintentionally funny, or are so crazy and over-the-top that they become funny.

I'll probably be approaching this one expecting less Robert Rodriguez style and more Stuart Gordon style (ala "The Re-Animator," "The Fortress," "Castle Freak," etc).

Numbers 11-20 can be found in this thread or on my blog.

My Top 20 science fiction movies (continued)

10. Blade Runner (1982)
Directed by Ridley Scott
Starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer and Sean Young

Blade Runner is set in Los Angeles in the year 2019 and it’s the kind of film that makes you think. There’s not an abundance of action, but there’s enough to keep the story moving. It’s slower than most science fiction films, but that’s a positive in this case. Deckard (Ford) is a Blade Runner; a man charged with finding and killing six replicants. Replicants are androids who are hard to tell from humans. Ridley Scott is asking us to consider what makes someone human. Some of the actions of the replicants suggest that they are human, so it’s a difficult task telling the two apart. The film is an adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. This isn’t Star Wars, so don’t expect to see Ford running around defying the odds. The first time I saw the film, I didn’t like it at all. It’s gradually grown on me over the years and is worth looking at a second or third time if you didn’t like it the first time you saw it. The Blu-ray presentation makes one of the best cases for upgrading to HD. I wouldn’t be surprised if I rank Blade Runner higher when I have seen it a few more times.

9. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Directed by Steven Spielberg
Starring Richard Dreyfuss, François Truffaut, Melinda Dillon and Teri Garr

Spielberg likes to make movies with mass appeal and Close Encounters of the Third Kind certainly fits into that category. It grossed $304 million worldwide and ranks 69th on the all-time list (adjusted for inflation). So why did so many people pay to see the movie? The title suggests that we will see a lot of close encounters, but that’s not the case. Spielberg shows a few spaceships at the beginning of the movie and almost two hours pass before we see any others. The movie works because of the suspense it creates. When Roy (Dreyfuss) has a close encounter, he starts to behave oddly. What is he doing and why is he doing it? Will he persist even though it threatens his marriage? Although the pacing never feels slow, there’s almost no action in the entire movie. The story is built around two people who feel compelled to travel to a certain destination. It was a plus to see François Truffaut in front of the camera rather than behind it and he was convincing as a French scientist. Spielberg has delivered a suspense movie disguised as science fiction. It works wonderfully. The Blu-ray looks and sounds almost perfect and includes all three versions of the movie.

8. War of the Worlds (2005)
Directed by Steven Spielberg
Starring Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning and Tim Robbins

I ranked the 1953 version of War of the Worlds at number 18 and I usually can’t stand seeing classics remade, but I like what Spielberg did with the 2005 version. First of all, it isn’t exactly a remake. It’s set in this century and includes modern technology. He sticks to the rules established in the first movie, but it’s shown from the viewpoint of a different set of characters. The special effects leave very little to the imagination and you’ll see people disintegrate before your eyes rather than simply vanish. The Martian machines are deadly and convincing and the acting is so much better than what we saw in the original version. The pacing is excellent and the action rarely lets up. Ray Ferrier (Cruise) tries to keep his children safe. He’s never completely earned their respect, but he steps up when the crisis develops and finally earns their trust. Spielberg respects the original movie by delivering a similar ending. It won’t appeal to everyone, but I’m glad he didn’t change it too much. You might have found yourself laughing at the original version, but there’s not much to laugh at here. It’s a suspenseful action movie with good special effects. The Blu-ray is a little grainy, but decent, and the sound quality alone makes it worth the upgrade.

7. The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Directed by Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski
Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving

The three Matrix movies often leave viewers divided. While most people like The Matrix, Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions commonly meet with criticism. I like all three and consider each part of the trilogy vital to make all three work effectively. This middle entry is almost as good as the first in my opinion. Agent Smith becomes an even more interesting character and it’s good to have some background information showing how and where the crew lives. It also boasts one of the best chase scenes I’ve seen. I respect the opinion of those who were disappointed by the sequels, but this is my list and I would be lying if I failed to include The Matrix Reloaded. The Blu-ray presentation is highly-detailed and the sound mix is bold. Both definitely add something to the intensity of the overall experience.

6. Moon (2009)
Directed by Duncan Jones
Starring Sam Rockwell and the voice of Kevin Spacey

It’s difficult to talk about Moon without giving away too much of the plot, so I’ll keep this brief. Sam Bell (Rockwell) works for a mining company based on the far side of the moon. He can contact Earth by sending videos, but his only source of companionship on the station is Gerty (Spacey); a computer similar to HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Gerty talks to him, prepares his meals, cuts his hair and takes care of him if he gets hurt. Sam’s contract runs for three years and he’s only got two weeks to go. One day, he suffers an accident while on a routine mission to the surface, and wakes up in the infirmary. He’s unable to remember certain details and may even be hallucinating. We’re unsure whether he’s suffered brain damage or permanent injury. Director Duncan Jones has a few surprises in store. The feel of the movie is distinctly old school, and is similar to 2001 in some ways. Jones uses convincing models to portray events on the surface. Rockwell plays a difficult role extremely well, but I can’t describe the details without ruining the plot. The Blu-ray presentation looks great considering the film had a budget of just $5 million. Jones’ debut feature is a significant achievement and it was good to see him work with a bigger budget and other established actors in his second movie, Source Code.

Absolutely SHOCKED to see War of the Worlds so high. I thought the movie was "okay / alright" at best but Dakota Fanning's absolutely atrocious and "please take a pick axe to my skull" constant, awful screaming made me hate the movie. Absolutely hate it.

And if I remember correctly, the aliens "weakness" was laughably dumb I thought.

Very glade to see Moon so high though!
Like the list Steve (so far) very interested to see #1 although I have some ideas...

The "weakness" was in the book over 100 years ago and the 1953 version. I think it's pretty clever. BUT would an advanced technology figure out how to reach Earth and forget to pack
[Show spoiler]Tylenol?

One of my friends always used to say about Roswell... they fly all that way to get here and then crash into a mountain?

I did NOT like War of the Worlds...

But...it showcases Tom Cruise's true talent more than his other movies....his epic running

[Show spoiler]

I enjoy Matrix: Reloaded, but it's definitely not as good as the original imo.

I also don't enjoy Moon as much as most around here.

And to top it off, I didn't like Blade Runner at all. Not a bit.
