WHAT?

On what uncalibrated TV are you watching your UHDs? There's no pink-magenta tint on the 4K remaster.

Congrats guys! This 4K does not feel an inch like a 1990s photochemical timed film. It looks like a modern 4K VIDEO shot movie.
WHAAAAAAAT???

It was 3D master with its DNRd to death, teal & orange grading that looked like a digitally shot movie and it was AWFUL

Jurassic Park NEVER looked like this.

agree, while the uhd master is not perfect the 3d version looks like crap in so many ways.

Separately, I've come to wonder about members seeing prints at "revival theaters" and using that experience as a reference. Prints can vary in quality. A theater's projector may not be set up properly. The lamp will vary due to age. The screen fabric in most theaters isn't going to touch a top tier fabric, such as Stewart ST100, for example, when it comes to image purity.

Finally, what display are you using?
People might not want to accept it but a staggering amount of home video masters don't resemble the original look of the films. They are usually just that, video masters. They are not necessarily preservations intended to accurately reproduce the original colors, contrast, etc. Although there are plenty of remasters where extensive work was done to match it to the original look as closely as possible. Niche companies like Criterion have used answer prints to ensure accuracy and companies like Arrow will sometimes get those who know best to replicate the original look like they did with The Thing by involving both Carpenter and Cundey.

With a company like Warner, the above methods have become standard procedure. I don't think the same can be said for any other company, a company like Sony does a better job than most by getting the colors right (despite their tendency to really pump up brightness and contrast on some of their titles), but they have had some blunders too. Their 4K master of John Carpenter's Vampires had the completely wrong colors before Twilight Time stepped in and got it fixed for their Blu-ray release. It was missing the ever-present red tint which was there originally.

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&a...=65497&i=4&l=0

People tend to think that all you need to do to get the right colors is to scan the negative, invert it and that the job's done or they just scan a positive print. This isn't the case at all. It takes so much time and effort to color correct a film, never mind accurately color correcting a film and it's just not feasible or (from their perspective) worthwhile to do so when people will buy it regardless.

Also seeing multiple prints of the same film on properly set up equipment along with reading extensive notes from the cinematographer is pretty much as "reference" as the public can get.

That master was color timed for 3D which explains some of the weirdness. Jurassic Park was very warm theatrically, however the prints were more golden instead of the orange on the 3D master.

I absolutely agree with the grain having been fudged with but you lost me at "HDR being virtually imperceptible" as there's some notable highlight retention vs the SDR BD throughout the film and a MaxCLL of 910 nits would indicate some decently bright peaks too, nothing special but hardly "imperceptible".

The MaxFALL however is only 101 nits so the average brightness of each scene isn't especially high and may be dimmer than the SDR in some spots, and here's the kicker: the more aggressive the tone mapping is on x display then the more the APL is only going to get dimmer and dimmer and dimmer...which ties in neatly with other users' issues around JP1 looking too dark as well.

I'll say the same thing to you as I say to everyone else who exclaims "I've got loads of HDR discs and this has never happened before!": it's HDR, so shit happens. I'm not saying that you're misrepresenting what you're seeing, what I'm saying is that your display might not be doing it any favours so it's not about others being "more forgiving", it's about others having a fundamentally different experience of the HDR & colour that this disc is putting out.

Bitrates:

JP2 - 6168
JP3 - 5345
JW - 3052

While JP2 seems pretty LOUD. JW looks to be pretty low, is this a miss print that doesn't look right. I think the Blu is set louder then that. I hope this is wrong.

I'll be watching these tomr on my day off anyway
Thanks for pointing this out. JW sounded very muted, I have to increase volume quite a bit to get to the levels of other discs but still lacking. This been the case with soundbar and Energy take system I use for Non Atmos discs. But the disc looked Phenomenal.

Watched JP1 last night. DAAAAANG that DTS-X track!!! When the first thunder claps hit while they're helping with the sick triceratops, all the way through the first T-Rex attack, I could swear I was in the middle of an actual tropical storm. Really looking forward to hearing the rest of the films.

My walmart has like 5 of the boxsets. How has the quality been with the stacked discs? That is the only reason why I didn't pick the set up. Are the discs easy to get in and out without scratching?

With HDR, I'm personally kinda glad we're seeing it used sparingly on most older catalog titles and not getting into revisionist territory there...just using it as an enhancement is a-okay with me on the classics. On new stuff, hey, bring in on as thick as the film-maker's desire!

JP was a little dim on my non-calibrated MU8000 when using my preferred low Contrast Enhancer setting but it looked great when I bumped it up to high. It felt so 'right' that I never considered dialing it back like I have with a few other HDR discs that weren't bright enough for my tastes on low.

Having the contrast enhancer on "high" removes much of the details.

Muted audio on JW? It is Skywalker Sound so it is possible they used their 'Disney preset' by accident?

I'm no tech expert but the Contrast Enhancer setting supposedly works differently on SDR and HDR on some Samsungs. I've read elsewhere and heard back from Samsung themselves that Contrast Enhancer should be turned on when watching HDR content.

Some brighter HDR films do lose detail for me when I push it to high, which is why low is my default setting, but dimmer ones definitely benefit from the high setting with my setup (which I freely admit is non-calibrated and probably not ideal).

Dynamic Contrast does react differently with HDR vs. SDR content, at least on my TV. But I try watching UHDs at nighttime so I can avoid using the Dynamic Contrast; even on Low, you can tell that it affects detail to a small extent.
