Wasn't Jaime Lee Curtis already killed in a Halloween movie?

Sidney had fake death scenes in both Scream 3 and Scream 4.

I really appreciated that
[Show spoiler]Dylan Minnette shower scene.
More horror films can make the

when it comes to such a well-worn staple of the horror genre.

I agree! I loved that subversion on the blonde in the shower scene, really smart.

agree with this minus the praise for the kills and thrills, I thought this had among the worst kills in recent slasher history

I loved it. I feel it could have been a tab bit better, but I love this entire franchise. Part 4 really went out and brought in a new cast, with the main players from the first three being supporting really. I don't see why so many people are upset with them doing the exact same thing in this one? The kills could have been better, but it is what it is. The ending was kinda iffy, but I like how the played a certain character to think they would turn out to be the killer. The reasoning behind the killers was kinda lame in my opinion though.

It was decent, but I felt there were some underdeveloped character points, and reveals that seemed rather pointless or underwhelming. If anything I was getting Scream 4 deja vu with this film. I won't rate it officially yet, but so far I'd say it's 1, 2, 4, 5, and 3.

That's my ranking. Felt this was a pretty significant step down from 4. 3 is still the low point of the series. Man is Kevin Williamson the only one who can write these?

Well for me, I saw potential all over the place with this film. The directors did a fine job with suspense, and the kills which were indeed brutal. Overall I'd say Wes woulda been proud with their directorial effort. It just seemed like they took "big swings" that Kevin suggested, but they sat in the dugout in other areas of the story. The swings made I'm also on the fence about.

P.S. i was definitely disappointed with the chrome Ghostface with the flame thrower bit. That was a marketing con.

I revisited the first four prior to seeing this yesterday and part 3 was much worse than I remembered it being. The new one isn’t quite as bad as 3, but it’s a pale imitation of the original.

1. Scream
2. Scream 2
3. Scream 4
4. Scream 5
5. Scream 3

Why the hate for 3? I think it has the best whoddunit elements and the best meta commentary.

It's also super fun and camp while still giving us good performances and a sleek direction. The set piece in the woodsboro set is great stuff

It's perfectly find to introduce new characters that make it through the film and possibly also become more of the focal point, but much like with Scream 4 "you don't mess with the original characters". I go to see a Scream film for legacy characters like Sidney (who in my opinion should never die). We are seeing more horror films introduce new characters who are the focal point with the original stars (or characters) Halloween'18 introduced Andi Matichak as Allyson but also gave us Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie. The new Texas Chainsaw Massacre is bringing back the character of Sally Hardesty (not with Marilyn Burns RIP), with a group of younger characters as well.
I'm sure if they ever decided to do another F13 or NOES we might get Ginny and Nancy back in the fold.
Most fans want to see legacy characters! I'm pretty sure
[Show spoiler]if they had killed Sidney in this film,
the fans would have gone ballistic. But honestly that would have been way more predictable and something that usually happens in horror films, the iconic killers in horror films might be entertaining, but it's the legacy characters that give the film purpose and heart. Once you begin killing them off and keep introducing water down version of these character in later films is when they begin losing steam.....

I agree, granted this is still a horror franchise, Sidney and Gale especially are the characters that sold the movies for almost three decades. I think 4 had a really good balance of old characters and new characters, the younger ones and Judy were very likable. Liked how Gale was shown to be the old lady who's not quit important as Sidney so much that she puts herself in danger to prove herself "she's still got it" while Dewey is unable to keep things under control alone as a sheriff because the killings are being leaked online. Sidney almost looked bored in 4 like "not again", I think in 5 Neve went for a more fierce face but still in 4 she has some good fighting scenes and looked genuinely horrified when she finds Olivia and gets that phone call. IDK 4 is so great to me.

But It's hard for me to rank them, they are all so equally good:

Story and setting: 3
Villain, motives and kills: 4
direction and set pieces: 2
characters and cast: original and 4
opening: original and 4
final act: 2, 3 and 4 are all pretty close but 4 wins
ost and sound: original?
Tone: original
acting: apart 5 they're all equally good but Mrs Loomis in 2, Sidney in 3 and Jill in 4 are standouts
Mask: 3 and 5
Meta commentary: 3 and 4

So I would say
4
3
1
2
5

but they're all very close, if 2 didn't recycle the stage setting twice and didn't have so much meta commentary it would be ranking higher than the original but keeping in mind in was put together so quickly it proved it's one of the best sequels in cinema history. It definitely improved the final act and reveal over the original and has a higher body count and a more complex direction but the simplicity of the original makes it the more realistic and timeless.

3 did everything right imho, having a trilogy with each installment being unique and different is what makes me love this franchise. The tone and settings are all different and you can say they're 3 different takes on the genre. It says a lot about Wes Craven's multifaceted talent. The script for 3 gets a lot of hate but I think it continued Sid's arch very well, included Cotton perfectly and did the movie within a movie thing very well too. It felt like a love letter to Hollywood while being a satirical piece at the same time. Unfortunately it's not bloody enough for my slasher standards but we all know why.

4 is the one with the best twists and more clever, poignant take on the genre. It also feels like the most realistic and plausible along with the original, Jill was actually disturbing.

I agree with you on almost everything, I'd still rank the films 1-5, but I do agree with all the problems 2 had, it's still one of the strongest sequels and that opening theater kill to Gale's chase scene is the best in the series...
I'd also say that Neve's acting in the first is on another level, the first scene when she talks to the killer and her reaction to him saying "You hang up on me and you'll die, just like your mother! Do you want to die, Sidney?" it goes from shock to anger so perfectly and shows just how strong a character Sidney is...
I also feel like Scream 5 did a better use with the Stab references then 4 did and I really liked Tara Carpenter & Mindy Meeks-Martin and could see them go another round in a sequel both Actresses are talented and could do so much more, Jasmin Savoy Brown is amazing in Yellowjackets and I loved her energy and what see brought to the few scenes she was in as Mindy! I also think Sidney was more of a fighter in Scream 4 then in 5
[Show spoiler]her getting stabbed trying to get the knife on the table was just asinine, she would have hit Amber with something before running for the knife in earlier films!

Mmmm I think the Stab thing was done better in 2-3-4 but I agree Sidney getting hurt in the end in 5 was silly, but I liked how she was over anyone firing her gun randomly at doors and she clearly would have had the upper hand from the get go, also because she doesn't know the killers so she wasn't emotionally invested or surprised like in 4. But I guess they always try to make us think she could die anytime

I had high hopes for this but found it somewhat underwhelming. It popped in moments here and there, but generally lacked the fun and thrills of the Craven films. Those always had chase scenes that put big budget action thrillers to shame with their tension levels, and buckets of clever wit. I missed Williamson almost as much as Craven.

The people who usually complain about ‘woke’ were pretty quiet about this one, which surprised me because in a very multiracial cast
[Show spoiler]only white people were killed. If non-whites ‘died’ then they were resurrected. White male characters were either killed off (including beloved legacy hero Dewey) or revealed to be a psycho killer. Perhaps the online feeding frenzy is yet to come…

I wouldn’t say it’s a bad film though. It’s to Scream’s credit that it has gone five films without an out and out stinker. That must be a record for a horror franchise. 5cream definitely hovers toward the bottom of my list though, jostling for last position with 3.

Friday the 13th had 5 straight films in a row without an out and out stinker. I actually like all of them to some extent.

Friday the 13th was a stinker in itself. Characters have no depth, they are just meat to be slaughtered.
