I have trouble making it through part 1. Its incredibly boring.

I always find the beginning to this video hilarious.

Yeah that too. And supposedly there is footage that Kubrick filmed of Jack finding the scrapbook in the basement which you see on his table in the movie. I'm not sure that scene even got to editing though.

Wait till you get to the CGI that wasn't even that great for a '90's TV movie. I remember that picks up in the second part. The problem with it is that even when there are scenes that aren't that bad, the thing never gets any momentum going because they felt the need to include EVERYTHING from the book. I bet somebody could cut together a decent version if they started by cutting the length in half and then started tweaking. It's just that there's no point, we already have a version that is better in every way.

Oh I've seen it all the way through before it's just re watching it again is really hard.

Just everything about it is boring. The Shining is not like "It". You don't need 5 hours to tell the story in the book properly. The one intriguing thing about it is that it's filmed where King actually was inspired to write the novel. But then the problem with that is the actual hotel is not scary at all and looks boring.

Did you guys hear about The Shining prequel that was gonna be directed by Mark Romanek. I guess it was gonna be about them building the Overlook Hotel. It was gonna be a prequel to Kubrick's movie but I don't think it's happening anymore.

This is the last thing anyone has heard about it and that was over 2 years ago.

If you're determined to do something with the franchise, I suppose a prequel is the most sensible way to go.

I think it's just scary to touch Kubrick canon because if you f*** it up you'll never be forgiven.

Yeah but that will have nothing to do with Kubrick's movie and if you want to do Doctor Sleep correctly you should have a book accurate movie for it first. Then make a sequel to that movie.

The book "Dr Sleep" has its fans, but I'm not one of them. And I am pretty forgiving towards recent King. It's very tossed off, like the airport novel trilogy he did that started with "Mr Mercedes". Still, any fan of Kubrick's "The Shining" should read "Dr Sleep", just for all the petty asides King throws in to emphasize what Kubrick got wrong about the story. At times, it seemed like that was his primary motivation for writing the book. I would second Bronson's point, though -- King crafted a story that is a sequel to the book, but wouldn't really work as a sequel to the movie. I'm sure that was on purpose.

It would be great to say that the aliens that built the obelisk also built the Overlook hotel. (They can use the slaves from "Spartacus".)

What supplements would you want to see on a Shining Criterion?

I think I mentioned this in the Criterion thread you were referencing earlier, but the scrapbook scene sounds brilliant. But you're probably right.

My dream supplement is including the footage that was cut when Kubrick pulled the film from its initial theatrical run, either as an entire alternate cut or in a deleted scenes section. But I have made my peace with the fact that this will never happen, same as the Strangelove pie fight footage.

The actual scrapbook prop still exists at the Kubrick Archive, it would be cool if they could scan the pages and have that as a supplement since from what I understand of the scene Jack would find the scrapbook and we'd see pages from it.

Yup same here. Then add a new commentary for it and pull over all the special features from the blu ray. Maybe add a couple of interviews also.

Oh, I always forget about the short docs he did. I imported the UK "Fear and Desire" because it included all 3, but the US release only had one. So the other two, those should be a supplement on some release somewhere over here, might as well toss them in to this hypothetical.

The behind the scenes documentary for The Shining that Vivian Kubrick directed still might be the greatest behind the scenes ever. You never get to see behind the scenes footage of Kubrick sets. And this is why people know how much of a dick he was to Shelley Duvall.
