...uh... yep. so, Black Moon, huh? well, it's a movie. made in 1975. it's weird. has almost no dialogue. a bunch of random naked children chasing pigs and goats. some people dressed like they walked off the set of Pocahontas, a talking Unicorn and Babe's father. i say Babe's "father" because i don't know how old pigs can live until and i doubt they live well into their 40's - unlike sea turtles and maple trees (which live even longer )

anyway...

there's one girl that kind of looks like a young (aka: HOT) Jennifer Lopez, who oddly enough was hot for like, 15 minutes, and only in a certain type of lighting in a certain type of clothing in a certain type of hairstyle.

then there's some old lady. and another John Smith guy.
and the main character who wanders around all confused. much like anyone who would watch this movie...

so what did i learn today? that blind buying Criterions are a terrible choice. at least, for me. but, it's just so much fun to blind buy! and these Criterions come in neat cases and with neat booklets i never read because reading requires energy and time that i just don't have because i spend time watching confusing as fudge old, weirdo foreign films that someone somewhere said was special!

and Black Moon is special. my god is it special. it's so special no one should ever, ever, EVER, EVER, EVER make a movie like this (AT ALL) ever again. even though it is like a weird animal lover / pornography (not together you sickos! ), Alice in Wonderland type film.

strangely enough i didn't hate it. and didn't turn it off and never really wanted to. and the 100 minutes past (thankfully) faster than i anticipated, but i still dislike the film. for all the "whoa! look at that! a black unicorn and a talking pig!" quirky moments, Black Moon is a black eye in my collection (see what i did there? ) and thus, i must now re-think my entire strategy for blu-rays and my collection!

and worst of all? i have other Criterions i blind bought that i still have to get through! there could still be a sneaky little bastard child Black Moon 2.0 hiding somewhere on my shelves! so much for getting sleep tonight!

so it boils down to the following simple plusses and minuses that i think i will now include in all my reviews to get my feelings across as honest and as simple as possible...

+ time past relatively quickly
+ interesting sets and designs
+ minimal dialogue was actually a plus for this film...
+ nothing made me go, "god! i hate this film! rarrr!"

- uhh.... was there a plot?
- creepy grandma
- weirdo clothing
- naked children
- why would i want to watch this again?

and yet... after saying all this... still enjoyed this more than that coma put to disc everyone calls Army of Shadows!

2/5
So, what you're saying is I shouldn't blind buy Black Moon and Army of Shadows when I go to Barnes and Noble again tomorrow?

Enjoy Comic Con. I wish I didn't miss out on buying tickets, especially since this is the last year my favorite show's cast will be there (Chuck).
Thanks killowertz. I missed out on buying tickets too... So I subscribed to the SDCC twitter page and jumped on the 4-day passes when they released more about a month ago.

I definitely won't be able to make every panel because of lines/crowds and such, but the ones I am primarily aiming for:
  • Underworld: Awakening sneak peek and panel with Kate Beckinsale
  • Sony Panel (sneak peek + cast panel for Amazing Spider-man, 30 Minutes or Less, etc.)
  • True Blood Panel and Q&A
  • Batman: Year One world premiere (DC Original Movie) + possible blu-ray giveaway
  • DreamWorks Fright Night Panel with Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
  • WB/Hanna Barbara Blu-ray Panel (possible blu-ray giveaway)
  • Fox Panel (Sneak peek titles unannounced )
  • Robert Rodriguez Panel
  • Jon Favreau/Guillermo Del Toro Panel
  • ...and a bunch of other Comic-related non-blu-ray related panels like Todd McFarlane, Batman, and Street Fighter X Tekken Panels

Pretty excited because this is my first year going. I'll be headed for exclusives before anything.

Yep, I learned that the hard way too (can't remember for which title specifically, but the last greatest borefest was indeed "Army of Shadows"). I came so close to blind-buying this one too, but mediocre reviews drove me off.

But after reading your review, it sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Awesome review; it was a great and informative read.

And that's not even the half of it, I've seen a billion films that none of my friends haven't even heard of, yet I obviously know nothing about film because I never watched the whole of Gladiator Not that I haven't tried to of course, but I never connected to it, I constantly gave up about 30 mins into it every time I tried. So I finally thought I will grit my teeth and get through it, and I still don't see why everyone loves it so much.

The story is really slow to the fact I simply don't give a rats ass, the characters are typical "Historical Epic" fodder, who all talk in received pronunciation, I simply don't see the heart and soul of the film which connects to the people. It isn't a lovely film to look at through cinematography, it's fairly uninspired in the action department, I just don't get it.

3/10
It's not a bad movie, but it's certainly nowhere near as great as it is being regarded.

A blu-ray buyer's commandment, that one. I try to check them out before buying them, especially Criterions. IFC and TCM usually shows Criterion titles, and recording them has saved me some money. No worries about flipping Criterions though.

I'm with you, I never thought it was bad, and I'm not really angry that it's so acclaimed, but I really had to wrestle through it

As for Lebowski, I love it, my friend and I were talking about cult comedies (we started on Anchorman) and I said The Big Lebowski, and he said "Wait, was I supposed to be laughing at that film"

I understand why people wouldn't like Evil Dead 2, I personally love it And The Warriors is a bit dated, but it's a hellah load of fun and still a little impactful

Next greatest random selection: “Star Trek2009.

You’d have to be living under a rock on Delta Vega to have never heard of “Star Trek.” Ever since its (tragically-cancelled) run in the 60s, this quaint sci-fi adventure show has spawned almost a dozen films, half-a-dozen spinoff TV shows, and a massive fan base that could constitute its own nation (complete with its own language, customs, and dress code ). Slight problem with some of the original films is that they cater specifically to the Trekkies; most casual audiences might find some amusement among the even-numbered films, but it’s a nerd haven more than anything.

So, in 2009, this reboot was released, and the casual audience was pleased. Even if you’ve never liked or heard of “Star Trek” before, this film is the bomb! From start to finish, there’s loads of spectacular space battles, shootouts, fistfights, and occasional bursts of witty humor. The pacing is tight, and the movie overall carries an adventurous spirit that hasn’t really been used since “Star Wars.” At the same time, die-hard Trekkies should be relieved to see some familiar faces, hear some familiar lines, and witness the occasional homage to the classics.

The story might seem off-putting at first, but it all comes together and brilliantly kicks off a franchise that’s distinct and separate from the previous incarnations of “ST.” It’s pretty darn fun seeing the origins of the characters and how they come together. The characters themselves are very well-developed and portrayed; it’s hard not to like the lot of them, and they do exceptional justice to the original characters. I also admire the film for showing some of the dangers and peril of space travel.

Coming from JJ Abrams, you can expect some jittery camerawork (seriously, the guy was literally tapping on the camera like it was a drum or something) and some stylish lens flares (some people find them annoying, but I think they add to the realism and intensity of the film). Otherwise, the camerawork shows a fine balance between being steady and being hectic, and shows plenty of strong points. Editing is decent too. Acting is superb; I find Chris Pine a little off as Kirk, but Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban are perfect as Spock and McCoy, respectively. Zoe Saldana is okay; I rather enjoy the performances of Eric Bana, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin. Apparently, Winona Ryder’s in the mix too. Writing is good overall. Production value is decent; it’s pretty obvious that they filmed many scenes at a beer factory, but most camera tricks are incredibly convincing, and it shows magnificent prowess at using less to make more. So overall, there are lots of interesting sets, props, costumes, and gorgeous special effects. Music is surprisingly catchy.

In the past, I might have given this a mere 4.5/5, mostly because I’m thinking the sequel will be 5/5 material. But heck, this is currently my favorite “Star Trek” movie, and has taken its spot as my #8 favorite movie.

5/5 (entertainment: 5/5, story: 4.5/5, film: 4.5/5)

Recommendation: Hell yeah!

This Blu-Ray has a few soft-looking shots, probably as an intentional artistic effect or camera lens effect. Otherwise, it looks darn near perfect! Sound quality is a little subdued, but it does have excellent clarity and balance, and can be really awesome with the space-aged sound effects.

PQ: 5/5, AQ: 4.5/5

My biggest issue with the camerawork was the scene between Kirk and Pike early on in the club/dinner place. It was so bad...

With a screen that big, every time he moved the camera the image must have jumped like 5 feet

Yep, but at times, I felt like I really was in space.

I've never gotten to see a film in IMAX

The nearest one is 45 minutes away in New Orleans, and it's not worth the drive and gas money for every movie released so far.

...but I'll be making the drive for Dark Knight Rises since it will have a LOT of IMAX footage and it is my most anticipated movie of next year (even with the underwhelming trailer)

Gladiator

3 attempts to get through the film in it's entirety, THREE!!! Now how can I like a film where I can't sit down and watch it all in one

WHY is this OUT OF all the films in the world so acclaimed by my friends of mine, yet all the films I love are simply "Shit" according to them.
Films I've shown to friends of which I have received that reply from are...

The Thing
Scott Pilgrim
Black Swan
127 Hours

The Big Lebowski
Kill Bill
The Usual Suspects
In Bruges

The Warriors
Evil Dead 2 (although, I can kinda agree on that one)
etc, etc

God, I need new friends

3/10
I've only seen the highlighted films (so far) but seriously wtf @ your friends?!

Black Swan and 127 Hours are 2 of the best films that have come out in recent memory in my opinion!

In Bruges is a personal favourite of mine
[Show spoiler]Maybe that's what hell is, the entire rest of eternity spent in ****ing Bruges.

The only other IMAX film I ever saw was "Avatar." I might have seen some science-y documentary as well, but I can't remember. They have been smashing presentations.

But, my nearest one is also 40+ minutes away, through heavy traffic and through the bad side of town (looks like it's populated by Arab refugees). So yeah, I'm not interested in going through the trouble either.

I'm sure "TDK Rises" will be smashing. I've always wanted to see Bane in a Batman movie ("Batman and Robin" notwithstanding). Even if they don't follow the Knightfall storyline, I'm sure Nolan will make an awesome story out of it.

I can imagine Avatar would have been an amazing visual experience in IMAX.

Sounds like an interesting trek (see what I did there?) to your IMAX.
Mine is much less interesting. Mostly highway.

I can't wait to see what he does with Bane. I think Hardy will do a great job.
I'm still a little iffy on Catwoman as I am not a fan of the character, and Nolan's female characters aren't that interesting or well written as his male characters. I'm hoping for the best though
