I'd say this method is markedly better.
We also got Darth Maul, Jango Fett, General Grievous, awesome lightsaber fights, pod racing, a great younger Obi Wan and new stories and things we hadn't seen before.
By the way, I don't have a problem with midichlorians. At least they explain why everyone isn't a Jedi or Sith. Jar Jar is goofy but kids like him.

Again, characters are characters, their genders are only a small part of who they are. We already understand Rey can fight off people being a scavenger who'll have to protect herself and her possessions, and that she knows her way around spacecrafts. Her gender doesn't even come into it, and Daisy Ridley fit on screen, has great screen presence and charisma. If she was terrible, then I might have thought they only hired her for diversity's sake, but she doesn't, she's great along with the rest of the cast. So there's really nothing to be complaining about.

I don't get that at all. I guess it could be jealousy--I feel Abrams gave something to Star Wars fans he's never given to Trekkers.

So this is what desperation looks like. And in many ways I hate that I contributed to this film's box office. I wish I could turn back time and never give this a chance and listen to George Lucas' warning.

This was worse then the prequels. And I sincerely apologize to Lucas for every criticizing them in the way I did after seeing how bad it really can get. This is a big budget fan-made Star Wars film. The script of this film...did it even get a second pass? The amount of contrived moments littered throughout this soulless mess was shocking - especially for a film of this scale.

Can we get over that 90% of the plot is based around a stupid MacGuffin? Oh the writers really tried hard with this one. What a boring movie they wrote. Lame action, forced humor, nothing memorable. What a waste of everyone's time. Introduce a location, blow it up. Introduce a new location, blow it up. Yeah and the rebels only need a dozen fighters to take on this scary, cookie cutter 'order' or whatever they call it. At this point its a matter of respect, and the lack of it shown towards me from Hollywood has passed the breaking point. If these suits destroy Snyder's Batman v Superman, then that will be the end of it.

Dont get me started with the feminism garbage. At least try and be sincere. When you layer it on this thick its obvious your a puppet playing games. You dont care about women's rights, all you care about is public perception. And it shows in your pathetic attempts to 'empower' women. You think showing a woman over power men physically on multiple occassions empowers them? You make me sick Hollywood. You and all your publicity stunts dont fool me. No, not one single bit. Your gutter trash, and dont you ever pretend you arent.

Well, Hollywood got what they want. If this film bombed it would really hurt the only thing they care about, their pockets. All the needle brain critics who rated this high no they would be out of their dime a dozen jobs as well if the movie industry isnt healthy. So they inflated this hunk of lard into something its not. Im sure the suits who are rolling in cash at Disney appreciate it. Lucas had the appropriate term for them.

Finally an intelligent review. This movie is garbage!
Hollywood makes movies to make money. They feel the best path to that money is high entertainment value.

I was thoroughly entertained by Episode 7, hence me giving them more money on repeat viewings, bluray sales, etc... Seems like the general public agrees. We're not all brainwashed, movies can be great escapism, everything on a screen doesn't have to illuminate a deeper meaning to life... For myself and many others Episode 7 pretty much hits that sweet spot.

Sorry you couldn't find joy in a 2+ hour space opera that you probably spent about $10-15 to sit through.

He's pretty right for Star Wars, and I was never really worried about his qualifications there. He got Star Trek pretty wrong, because he treated it more or less like Star Wars.

That and the chopped off arm in the cantina... Those images stuck in my head when I was a kid :-) In ROTJ you get the Rancor getting crushed in the gate, Jabba getting strangled, ESB has the nice innards of the tauntaun and Luke losing a hand. If the OT was re-rated, I wouldn't be surprised if they all got PG-13

ROTJ's first hour really scared me as a kid.

Yep. Let's hope the new film makes some improvements on that front.

Finally seen this with my wife and kids today. Easy 5 stars. This was one of the most fun movies I have ever seen in theaters. If I had any complaint it's the ending
[Show spoiler]should have ended with Leia saying May The Force Be With You to Rey and save Luke for the beginning of VIII
But that is a small complaint. This movie just reminded me of everything I love about Star Wars and the fact that We watched all 6 films in the 2 weeks before watching VII made it even more enjoyable (and showed how out of touch the Prequel Trilogy is when it comes to the real feel of Star Wars)

I'd say this is 3 stars out of 5, maybe if the other movies pan out by bringing more depth It might make it to 3 and a half stars out of 5.

Not sure what kind of stick is up Lucas' butt in regard to they made a film for the fans comment (based on the Charlie Rose interview from a few weeks back). The only thing I can gather is that The Force Awakens seems to have preaty much dumped the whole Joseph Campbell stuff which seemed to be Lucas' artisitic excuse for some of his poor story decisions in the prequels. Abrams seems to have used the original Star Wars films as more of an influence than then trying to filter everything through some kind of mythology filter.

One thing is for sure, Lucas appears very bitter about the whole Red Tails fiasco. Maybe Hollywood not supporting it hurt the film, but also the fact that the film was so terrible didn't help either!!!!! It's like he feels the film failed not because it was an extremely cheesy CGI fest that story/acting/directing wise was a through back to 1940's war films, but because of somekind of agenda by Hollywood to only bankroll films that they feel will make a ton of bank.

Final comment: at least this movie looks like it takes place in real space...no CGI storm trooper overload (like the clone troopers in the prequels), no GREEN SCREEN ADVENTURES look bathing the whole film, and the glorious depth and light of shooting on actual film!!! Whatever faults the film may have (mostly being a somewhat empty story, which like I said may get a boast when seen after the next films), at least it doesn't look like a terrible CGI cartoon!!!!!

Gee, I hope no one kidnaps me and makes me watch the movie again.

If I sat through any movie and picked it apart as much as some people do, it would be a wonder if I could ever feel joy.

Did you see the object in this photo in the actual movie?

I am still checking to see if JJ Abrams put that in the film or if it was a goof.

Saw this again over the weekend and I still feel pretty the same. Solid but fairly underwhelming. To me by far the best thing about the movie is Harrison Ford. Best work he has done in many years. Glad he
[Show spoiler]could send Han off
on that note.

The stuff about
[Show spoiler]light sabres having awareness or tendencies
really bugs me. Feels very Harry Potter, not that I hate HP. Just seems a bit strange in the SW world. Also I hope they explain how they found
[Show spoiler]Luke/Anakin's sabre along with Vader's helmet
.

Several other questions are out there as well, chief among them
[Show spoiler]how is Rey such a badass with The Force?
Guess that is what sequels are for.

[Show spoiler]For some reason Han's death seemed similar to Captain Kirk dying to me, maybe because they both died on a metal platform while someone else watched. The lightsaber thing was "FORCED" to me. In none of the other 6 films did one non-force user start swinging a lightsaber around other than Han opening up that Tauntaun. Unless Finn is force sensitive that's about as dumb and demystifying to the films as the midi-chlorian crap Lucas in the prequels.....as far as Rey, we can all guess she's probably Luke's daughter!!!!! Probably trained her when she was little, had to leave after Kylo got all emo
