Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Pretty sure I reviewed it not too far back, but hey, screw it, I love the film too much.

If you want to know, no, I do not recommend Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for Blind Buy, it's the most intense and disgusting comedy films of all time, but I do recommend it to see it for the first time; you'll never see a film effect you in a similar way.

If you don't know the plot, don't worry, there isn't much of one. But it's basic outline is that a reporter called Raoul Duke gets sent to Las Vegas to report on a desert bike race (which happens in the first 30 mins) with his "Adviser" Dr. Gonzo, they decide to make the most of the weekend by taking a huge amount of various drugs that could be enough to kill a family of elephants, as you can guess, this pretty much builds the rest of the film that isn't a bike race. The film has a sort of episodic structure, that makes the scenes feel like they have no link between each other, however the film seems to move fluently regardless, and the aimless sense of the film goes with the absurd visuals.

A weird thing I find is when films have the best sort of direction, is when they feel they have zero direction at all, if a film feels it's moving naturally, and the plot and characters move along without a feeling of a set destination then I find that perfect, since you buy into the film. So, clearly Fear and Loathing is the masterclass of this theory, unpredictable is a word that pops into the mind throughout, and I think the main reason is Benicio Del Toro. That dude is scary as hell in this film Whenever he whips out a knife, you'd believe that he'd not only stab the character, he'd had stabbed the actor, completely unpredictable and bat shit insane!

Obviously, I can't leave acting without talking about Johnny Depp, a few times I say he's overrated as an actor, in things like Alice in Wonderland and Sleepy Hollow, but in this film he reminds me why people love his so much. He completely throws himself in to the situations, and acts accordingly, with all the crazy hand movements and limbless walks that he does throughout.

How can I say make you want to watch Fear and Loathing, without lying and making it feel like something it isn't Do you want to watch a film that will make you want to throw up and make your stomach churn, then watch this film! If you want to feel scared witless by a screaming man covered in sweat, puke and oranges, then watch this film! If you want to see a rather large woman give birth to a space baby in mid air, then...watch...this movie?...yeah I'm not doing such a good job

10/10

PQ - Meh, it's got it's moments, it has a sharp image, but the colours look slightly washed out and darkened - 6.5/10

AQ - This has an awesome soundtrack, so the AQ is already pretty good for me, luckily enough, the audio is better than the picture, a lot of dialogue is clear (when it clear within the film anyway) - 8/10

[Show spoiler]Watched this shortly after finishing the entire “Batman Beyond” cartoon series for the first time. If you’ve seen the show; you’d know what to expect. Otherwise, it’s not too hard to get into; it’s basically the story of Batman in the future, with an aging Bruce Wayne passing the mantle of the Dark Knight to some hip young dude who beats the snot out of some crazy new villains in a futuristic environment. It’s pretty edgy and cool; fun for all ages.

Like the show, this movie features plenty of action and peril. The pacing is fast, the runtime is short, and the movie overall is easy to digest. The visuals are still stylish and slick, and with the dark sci-fi undertone, it’s pretty darn cool.

The story for this is a little predictable, but unlike any of the show’s episodes, it does reintroduce one of the classic villains in the ultramodern age (complete with Mark Hamill’s voice). It remains true to the series, with all the same characters and situations. It’s pretty sublime how it ties up events and characters of the past with the future. As part of the series, it doesn’t really add anything (much less closure); it’s just like another episode. But it does add to the Batman mythos quite well.

The film has about the same animation quality as the show. It seems a little more refined with sharper graphics and smoother movements, but it’s still blocky, funky, and minimalistic. Voice-acting is swell; the cast from the show still does the voices, and Mark Hamill is the man. Production designs feature some cool sets, props, costumes, vehicles, weapons, and more. Music is cool (was pleased to hear Static-X in the background ).

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Sure, why not?

This Blu-Ray looks pretty darn sharp and clean. It’s a fullscreen picture, with black bars on either side, and I’m sure that’s the movie’s true OAR. It has solid detail and texturing, and awesome colors and contrast; compared to the show on DVD, it’s a huge improvement. Sound quality did not disappoint.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4/5

I quite enjoy this one.

We all know cop movies; they show badass dudes flying through the air, with guns in both hands, shooting bullets galore at badguys, with big ‘splosions in the background and cars careening into buildings. Seriously, that’s exactly how this movie starts; right from the start, it lampoons the action genre before presenting the film’s real heroes. From there, it’s quite an amusing trip as the underdog protagonists confront danger from all angles. Above all, the film is loaded with funny and quirky dialogue, situations, and gags.

The story for this is not too far off from other buddy-cop movies, like “Beverly Hills Cop” or “48 Hours” or countless others. Once again, the movie slaps an odd couple together; it’s hard not to enjoy Will Farrell’s character, even when he is playing the biggest square on screen; I did find Marky-Mark’s character almost unlikable, but he does come off as more believable, with a few amusing quirks of his own. Together, they go through a fairly standard cop’s adventure, filled with plenty of laughs, and a few bursts of action.

The film has decent photography and editing. Acting is swell; Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg are good in their respective roles; Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne Johnson are perfect in their parts; Michael Keaton sure is looking old, but still makes a good police captain; and everybody else is solid. Writing is pretty darn good and funny. Production value shows lots of good sets, props, costumes, and special effects. Music is a little arbitrary, but good overall.

4/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: As a rental.

This Blu-Ray looks darn near perfect! Sound quality did not disappoint, but probably could be a grade better.

PQ: 4.5/5, AQ: 4/5

I didn't find it as funny as his other comedies, but there were quite a few moments that I found funny
[Show spoiler]like the tuna/lion fight, the silent fight in the funeral ("You, Me, in a library next week") and the office pop

I watched three movies over the last couple days:

The Mask of Zorro

I think I've already watched my copy 3 times since I got it in June.

I've reviewed it and discussed it a lot, so no need to write one up again.

Rating - 4.5/5

___

Firewall

I've seen this one several times now since it came out.

It's not great, but I enjoy it for two key reasons: Harrison Ford and Paul Bettany.

Everything about the movie is pretty straight forward and by the book for a cookie-cutter thriller.

Bad guys come in, good guy doesn't want to cooperate at first, but then does...while also trying to find a way to not cooperate. Hilarity ensues

But Ford and Bettany bring a good enough amount of awesomeness to take the movie beyond mediocre.

Rent it or watch it on TV first...especially since the blu-ray is supposed to be quite

Rating - 3.75/5

Also in the category of awesome people elevating movies:

The Sentinel

There's a mole inside the Secret Service. Go!
That pretty much covers the major plot of the film pretty well
There's also some tidbits about Michael Douglas having a fall out with Jack Bauer some years ago, Eva Longoria being a rookie fresh out of the academy, blah, blah, blah.

It's not necessarily bad, it's just not very interesting, and now I remember why I haven't watched it in a few years

Michael Douglas is boring, Longoria is ridiculously nice to look at...but brings nothing else at all and every other person in the movie besides Keifer Sutherland seems uninterested.

Sutherland, in his rather small part, is the only interesting thing in the movie. He's in Jack Bauer-lite mode here and he does his best to make you sit up and go, "Something's about to happen!!!!" but the rest of the movie is just too for him to save it.

Watch 24 instead

Rating - 3/5

Woke up this morning with a sudden urge for some Michael Bay.

Armageddon.”

I remember in the summer of 1998, I moved back to the US right at the end of the summer blockbuster season. I just happened to catch a glimpse of some post-hype advertising (I think a Burger King commercial or something), where half of the freaking Chrystler building is falling toward the camera with fire and rubble tumbling down after it. As fond as I was for impressive SFX and big action, I was like, holy crap, what was that?! It’s awesome!!!

That short clip was enough to entice me, and once I got around to watching “Armageddon,” it became one of my favorite movies in high school. In stark contrast with its rivaling film “Deep Impact” (which has a decent disaster scene, but also two hours’ worth of sappy drama ), this film is fast and intense. It’s got some of the biggest and most impressive mass destruction scenes, as meteors smash through New York, Paris, and the South Pacific. In between, the film is littered with some rather amusing comedy (lots of funny lines here) and some intense political drama. A few parts tug pretty hard at the heartstrings, and will either be sappy as hell or deeply invoking (for me, it’s a little bit of both; the ending always gets me). For 80% of it, it’s a fine summer blockbuster, providing all the ingredients necessary for a good time.

The story for this is fine and dandy; the premise is more realistically-handled in “Deep Impact,” and “Armageddon” almost makes a mockery of certain things (even the movie’s title is a misnomer; Armageddon is a place, not a time, stupid filmmakers… ). But ultimately, it’s a film that takes itself seriously when it needs to, and most flaws in its logic and accuracy are forgivable. What really makes it stand out will be the characters, who are solidly-developed from the start. By the end, you grow to enjoy and relate to them so well, it makes a bigger impact during the climax.

The film shows some hectic photography, but I’ve seen far worse; I enjoy most of the shots with all their unique camera angles, fast movements, and unique color schemes. Editing is extremely screwy, with a few scenes where conflicting shots are juxtaposed (for example, they show Air Force One, but the next shot shows the President at a desk in some building, WTF? ). Stuff like this might not be bothersome for casual viewing, but it can be glaring for more attentive viewers. Acting is swell for what it’s supposed to be; Bruce Willis is the man, Ben Affleck is not too bad here, I enjoy Liv Tyler’s performance, Billy Bob Thornton is the man too, and all the supporting actors (including Michael Clark Duncan, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, Owen Wilson, William Fichtner, and more) are smashing. Writing gets the job done really well, with enough exposition to make the story plausible enough, while throwing out plenty of comedy. Production value shows awesome sets, props, and costumes, but some things do look fake. Special effects are getting rather dated, but are still awesome conceptually. Music is fine and dandy; the score is pretty decent, and the rock songs used throughout are not bad (although, as much as I enjoy Aerosmith, his ballad “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” can get rather grating after hearing it a billion times).

4.5/5 (entertainment: 5/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: Sure, why not?

I was watching the Director’s Cut on the Criterion-edition DVD. It amounts to a whole two minutes difference, and I seriously couldn’t tell what was added and what wasn’t. Might have heard one extra f-word, but otherwise, the differences are subtle and hardly noticeable. Given this DVD’s iffy picture and sound quality, I’ll stick with the Blu-Ray for now on (but I’ll keep this edition for the extras, which are cool).

As disappointed as I was with the DVD, I popped in the Blu-Ray and watched a few favorite scenes. Right away, I could tell that it's a massive improvement. The picture could probably be a grade cleaner and sharper, but still shows good detail and good color and contrast. Grain and noise gets a little heavy with some scenes, but it's still a mostly-clean picture. Sound quality is insane; it's appropriately loud, and much cleaner, clearer, and more dynamic than the DVD edition.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4.5/5

Netflix synopsis:

Jake Gyllenhaal portrays a soldier recruited for a time-bending government investigation that places him in another man's mind and body, reliving the same traumatic event repeatedly in an effort to identify the perpetrators of a terrorist bombing. Vera Farmiga plays a communications specialist who provides the vital link to the soldier's primary reality as he searches for critical clues within a recurring nightmare.

Director: Duncan Jones

This was an enjoyable Sci-Fi romp. I didnt take it too seriously and it worked for me because of that.

Kinda like The Matrix meets Triangle. Kinda. Sorta. But not totally.

Performances were good. Farmiga was surprisingly good attempting to be cold and detached. Jake was solid. Michelle was good.

Directing and editing flowed. Score was pretty good.

Fish Tank

2009 NR 122 minutes

Netflix synopsis: (which is pretty good, actually)

The life of hot-tempered teen outcast Mia (Katie Jarvis) takes an unexpected turn when her mother, Joanne (Kierston Wareing), brings home a handsome and mysterious boyfriend named Connor (Michael Fassbender), who pledges to bring sweeping positive changes to the household. British writer-director Andrea Arnold's sophomore feature won Best British Film at the 2010 BAFTAs.

Director: Andrea Arnold

Totally depressing.

Life is tough for 15 year old Mia. The skys are grey. There is no money. The neighborhood is nasty. Mom drinks too much too often. Even when Mom aint drinking she is nasty. School sucks. But Mom's new boyfriend seems to bring a little something pleasant to Mia's life. He is caring, supportive and actually smiles. For a while......

Things become even darker toward the end of the film. There are a few moments where the dread of anticipated events becomes quite heavy.

This film felt very real to me.

All performances were darn good.

Editing had a few disjointed cuts, but it felt more like rookie work as opposed to a style. Not bad enough to affect my enjoyment of the film though.

1.37:1 aspect ratio for a 2009 film felt a little

Film 4.25/5
PQ 4/5
AQ 3/5 and thats generous. It has a DTS 5.1 lossless track, but it's wasted. Not all the channels are used even though there are tons of opportunities to exploit it through ambient sounds like music and traffic. Most of the background sounds are being pushed through the center channel, making dialogue frequently difficult to make out.

Still, I recommend it to those who enjoy depressing family dramas.

There is a glimmer of hope...

L.A. Confidential

Not really going to write a lot on this one, because my feelings are pretty straightforward and it's getting late here

I really liked it, which was going to be a given for me I guess, it's got the plot, the characters, the setting, the pace, the acting, all nailed. It's just missing that it factor for me to rave to my friends, sort of like a scene of which I can send to my friends on youtube that shows them how unique and awesome the film is to make them feel the need to watch it. And to be honest, L.A. Confidential isn't the sort of film they'd be in favor of watching.

9/10

I just watched this two days ago and loved it. I was really glad I chose this as one of first Criterion purchases recently.

Agreed about the movie feeling very real and the performances being very good. They had to be for the movie to work, and luckily they were.

Another great debut performance from a young actress, but I am surprised Katie Jarvis hasn't gotten any other roles over there given the acclaim Fish Tank got. Michael Fassbender was good as usual.

As for the aspect ratio, I am guessing it was chosen to give more of a "fish tank effect".

Also, I disagree to an extent about the audio. Any dialogue I had trouble understanding was mainly due to the accents, but it was never really much of an issue. As far as the music, that goes with the realism of the film. At least 90% of the music was played through Mia's old portable speakers, so it shouldn't sound as good as music that is just part of a movie's soundtrack.

[Show spoiler]Netflix synopsis:

Film 3.75/5

This young "up & comer" in the world of Film Critics, has an interesting take on the 5 Worst movies of 2011 (thus far). I like what he has to say AFTER he talks about the worst film of the year.

Eagle Eye

Yeah it's pretty entertaining popcorn thriller

Typically trying to make people paranoid of who is watching what they are doing, the film does a good job at trying to keep grounded in all it's insane stupidity (although, a pylon wire exploding and hitting someone I'm pretty sure can't be controlled by a computer, and exploding diamonds)

I think my biggest complaint is that it's all just a bit too serious, there's nothing lighthearted to it which sort of kills the whole jaunty feel of an action film, the only real life in the film is Billy Bob Thornton, who is gosh darn awesome here

Plus it seems to continual avoid falling in to typical traps, but ends up not being able to dodge them last minute, like for once I thought a film wouldn't have a love interest story line introduced, but at the end it rears it's head slightly.

7.5/10

What a little brat. I don't quite think he understands the POINT to a superhero film, I'm going to guess that he adores Watchmen

I gotta admire his plea to make these movies more original, but I agree with the Fogster. It looks like he'll grow up to be quite the film snob (...just like Ebert ).

Yeah, that's the one biggest "yeah right" moment that ruins it for me . But otherwise, I think my score's the same as yours.
