It was nice to finally meet Raylan's father Arlo, after hearing little bits about him throughout the early episodes of the show. This episode IMO, was a great followup to the pilot. I think this has been my favorite since the premiere. Just such great dialogue and tense moments, like with Raylan staring the the barrel of a 12 gauge. It was great to finally see Raylan embrace a bit of that anger that we know he keeps bottled. I loved the scene near the end when he picked up that bat. He managed to keep his swagger intact right up until he swung it.

I liked the scene with Raylan reliving his childhood as he wondered room to room reliving the moments of his life that shaped him into the man he has become. And hinting that his father was one brutal man when he was a child. The fact that Arlo put a gravestone in for every member of the family, and as a kid growing up Raylan actually had to see one with his own name on it, that had to do some serious damage, or at the very least make the kid death-obsessed and believing he was graveyard bound from a very early age.

When Winona showed up last night, I realized why it's been bothering me what I knew her from. Than I instantly remembered after watching season 3 of the Shield yesterday. She was on the show, and one of Vic's hookups throughout the season. I've noticed that just like Sutter has used a ton of Shield cast members on Sons of Anarchy I'm starting to notice a trend here with Justified as well, Walton Goggins, Natalie Zea and Brent Sexton from Life as well as The Shield.

Also one major thing I just MUST share with all of you, that is for you Band of Brothers AND Chuck fans. Rick Gomez who played the wisecracking George Luz in "Band of Brothers," and showed up last night with Winona in the court house as Vazquez, is also the older brother of Josh Gomez aka Morgan Grimes from Chuck!! Talk about a family of talent.

While maybe not quite as strong as the previous week's episode, I still enjoyed last night's episode. I liked how they handled some of the story outside of the case, like with Raylan and his ex-wife and how they are bringing back Boyd. Even though they were just sitting there talking on the phones in jail, you could see the tension between the two of them. The banter between Raylan and Art is getting pretty good too.

I actually thought last night's was a really damn good one. The tension established with Raylan and Boyd is so thick you could cut the air with a knife, you know something huge is coming down. Not to mention the major bit of info Boyd is holding onto that could put Arlo in prison for life.

I love Katherine LaNasa she is sexy as hell, so her guest appearance last night was very much appreciated.

A review of tonight's "Justified" coming up just as soon as I can't keep staring at your nipples...

I was less troubled than many of you by the more self-contained natures of the early installments of "Justified," but "The Collection" was an episode where the arc stories were a whole lot more interesting than Raylan's case of the week. And that's despite a very strong guest cast (Brett Cullen, Tony Hale, Katherine LaNasa and the ever-reliable Robert Picardo) in that portion of the episode.

Part of the problem is that this is already the third story in six episodes about a group of thieves double-crossing and trying to kill each other. While that's a staple of crime fiction in general and Elmore Leonard books in particular, Leonard's books come out with much less frequency than episodes of "Justified," and by the time LaNasa's character started blackmailing Hale, all I could think was, "Oh, this again? And so soon?"

And unless an episodic story is executed as well as the Roland Pike one from "Long in the Tooth," it's just not going to stack up well next to Raylan's ongoing problems with his father, his ex-wife, his boss, the Crowder family, etc., etc., etc., and this was an episode that featured movement on all those fronts. One of the advantages of serialization is that, done right, we grow more invested in characters and their stories with each passing week, and that means the stories that aren't continuing have to work even harder to make an impression. It's not a coincidence that the one scene from the art forgery plot that really stood out for me was when Picardo showed Raylan his collection of burned Hitler paintings, because it was such an obvious parallel to how Raylan has built an entire life on defying Arlo Givens and men like him.

But in terms of the ongoing stories, "The Collection" worked splendidly. After Raylan dropped bodies in three of the first five episodes, it was only going to be a matter of time before someone started looking into him, and why not smilin' David Vazquez? And how much worse will said investigation become if Raylan's relationship with Ava screws up Vazquez's case against Boyd Crowder? (Always nice to have Walton Goggins back, by the way.)

And after noting last week that I was starting to forget Natalie Zea is even on the show, Winona was back in a big way here, asking Raylan to look into some shady people her new husband is involved with, and then showing up at Raylan's place to show us a bit of the crazy chemistry that led him to break into her house at the end of the pilot episode.

So Boyd's back (and has some dirt on Arlo), Winona needs Raylan's help, Raylan's in all kinds of trouble at work, and Ava has no interest in running away from Bo Crowder. With this many plates spinning, the show is clearly embracing its serialized qualities. Ultimately, that's a good thing.

A few other thoughts:

• As Raylan was questioning Brett Cullen about all the possible murders being committed, I got an odd Columbo vibe off of Raylan - albeit a Lt. Columbo who'd just as soon put a bullet between his suspect's eyes as trick him into incriminating himself.

• I understand that "Justified" is being done on a basic cable budget, and that therefore some corners have to be cut, but the cheapness of the green screen effects whenever two characters are having a conversation while driving has become really distracting. If they can't afford something more convincing, they need to start placing those conversations in some other setting. Maybe Raylan starts walking a lot?

I did only say maybe, so my opinion wasn't set in stone yet. Either way, my opinion of last night's episode was very positive (for reasons already stated). I realize your post was probably more directed at Czar, but oh well.

It's wasn't actually directed at anyone, I just said I liked it quite a bit which didn't seem to be the consensus, lol.

The preview of next week's episode appears to deliver on that promise.

I sure hope so cause I have not been a fan of the stand alone "let's steal something and double cross each other" story of the week. I thought the show was going to be serialized, and those are the only episode I truly enjoy. I am only interested in 3 storylines and those involve Raylan and Boyd, Raylan and Winona and Raylan and Arlo. Beyond that I don't really care.

I just dropped the show for that very reason. Not enough serialization for my tastes. I was hoping this show would turn out like a redneck version of The Shield, but the increasing standalone nature of most episodes bade me to drop it.

Walton Goggins is basically the same character here as he was on the Shield lol, he's just played up his good ol' boy accent.

I really like this show, and so does my husband. But the most recent one didn't thrill me.

I sure enjoyed the hell out of tonight's episode. Really set things off with a bang (pun intended) and than after wondering when the hell we where ever gonna get to meet Bo Crowder in his walk in his orange jumpsuit glory. That is great casting, I always enjoy
[Show spoiler]M.C. Gainey's
work. I really feel like the serialized episodes focused on Raylan and the Crowders are by far the absolute strongest of the series and really hope they continue to focus more on this aspect. Raylan also didn't kill anybody this week, though not for lack of trying.

Tonight also featured many familiar faces including another Deadwood alum, Ray McKinnon as Red, the Spotter for the Button Man. On Deadwood he was Reverend H.W. Smith and had a very friendly relationship with Olyphant's Sheriff Bullock. David Meunier as Johnny Crowder most will recognize as Russell from Jericho.

When they keep it serialized the show is at its absolute best. Next week yet another Deadwood cast member is the bad guy lol. W. Earl Brown aka Swearengen's bar keep/henchman Dan Dority is the big fella in the orange jumpsuit he's chasing.

While I actually have enjoyed most of the episodes, I have to agree that the serialized episodes are the best. That's the way it is with most shows though. It's just a matter of how good the other episodes are.

The scenes between Raylan and Boyd were good as usual. While Art was only in it for one scene, him yelling at Raylan was great. After seeing the previews, I'm looking forward to next week's episode.
