I think that's a major mis-reading of Sucker Punch that people seem to love to make. But since this thread isn't about that movie, I will leave it there.

Just have to defend it.

I've also read that the main characters are more like detectives solving a mystery than action stars, but I can't seem to find that article now.

But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.

Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

As someone who values both style and substance, sometimes in different quantities depending on the mood, i agree.

Guess I'm just not seeing what you are. I don't think it will be huge, but I don't think it will be anywhere near flop territory. I'm going to see it multiple times for sure and purchase the blu-ray.

Adaption of unknown French sci-fi comic, no BO draws, summer competition (Alien like the week after this), Rihanna...this film has a lot going against it. My $16M US total may have been too high

When it comes to great non-superhero comic books, the US is one of the weakest markets to begin with. In the rest of the world though, the source material was quite huge. It's not just some unknown French comic. But it's not recent, so the current generation doesn't really know it anymore ... Hard to predict. I think it's not going to do that well either. OK overseas, below mediocre in the US.

So will this be Cara's last chance as a leading lady if it flops? I really enjoyed her in Paper Towns (she was perfectly cast) however she was miscast in Suicide Squad.

Ok maybe I was slightly pessimistic in my initial estimates. Maybe there will be some interest for this.

$7.5M opening
$21M total US

I'm sure there will be more interest abroad, but Valerian is definitely unknown in the states.

Using the music the way they did shows they want to try and tap into that Guardians of the Galaxy fanbase, I literally thought they were using hooked on a feeling the second that trailer began.

Ya'll also forget that it's coming out in the same weekend as Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk.

This film really isn't being made for the US market though is it? I think the only real concession towards us is the fact that they filmed it in English, otherwise I'm sure they'll be looking to the European and Asian market to make up the vast bulk of the world gross.

Agree. The box office gross will be very Warcraft like.

Who says a movie has to be adapted from something well known to make money? It could do well without being adapted from anything.

There must be something very good since it survived for so long. Also, so many other works have drawn from or were inspired by Valerian.

I can't wait to see it because it has a great cast:

Dane DeHaan
Cara Delevingne
Clive Owen
Rihanna
John Goodman
Ethan Hawke
Herbie Hancock
Rutger Hauer

and I really like Luc Besson's Fifth Element. I cant wait to see what he makes with todays technology. All of the images I've seen so far show a great amount of detail in the sets and costumes.

I think once the full trailer hits, more people will be interested. I thought the teaser was outstanding. I'm curious to see how much marketing there is for it. Can't wait to hear early reviews.

No one says it has to be based off anything to be big, but what was the last Summer film not based off something popular to come out to over, I dunno, let's say $70 Mill to give it a shot at breaking even?

Delevingne did fine in Squad. It seemed to fit what they asked of her. I don't think there was anyway she was a miscast w/ the way they had that character. While the Enchantress side was interesting at points... I thought she was perfect for the June Moone bits. Her acting in there seemed to fit what visual was needed for her.

-------

I think it'll do fine out of the US. Unless the theatrical trailer hits some more generic beats that will get the average in... I don't think it'll do well here. I'd assume we'd get a great trailer but one that doesn't appeal to those who don't verge out of their generic comfort zone for film.
