Yeah, I usually like collector sets but not enough here to justify a $40 higher MSRP. If it comes down a lot before release day though I might switch my pre-order. For now I'm pre-ordering the normal version.

Very probably, as a pre-order for a standsalone Blu-ray release of the 40th Anniversary edition is up for the same date. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. At least so far.

Don't believe it will be anywhere near this price on release. Expect a price drop when there's some actual solid, official info on this release. And probably a further price drop before release.
The ET set already dropped like $20 in the first few days.

Studios should just stop announcing the MSRP. No major retailer will be selling it for that much.

MSRP just hurts pre-order sales. Why not just list it at the price it's really going to sell for in the first place instead of playing games?

I agree though that the box set is not even a little bit enticing to me. It's just not worth it. I'd rather take a nice shiny slipcover than an oversized box that won't light once the batteries die and a book with some photos in it.

Yeah, or Amazon should wait to list things until they know their base discount before price-matching. Every thread is "oh my god this is $40???" when things are first listed. Though in this case I will say the MSRP seems high, so we'll see how low it goes.

Great steelbook!, I’d be interested on the gift set only if the battery supply for the lights/sounds is easily replaced. Very disappointed with BIG 25th anniversary slipcover, the sound chip (for the piano tune) stopped working after a while (with minimum use as other have pointed out) and battery can’t be replaced without tearing the slipcover apart. I realize it's a different studio, just a general packaging designer/manufacturer consideration.

Mine still works fine, as does the sound-chip in my Wizard of Oz 2-Disc DVD from 12 years ago.
My BTTF Flux Capacitor box still lights up 3 years later too.
