I know you still don't believe me that DV improves the compression but a photo won't prove anything as my camera (Sony WX150) will smudge that fine grain into noise anyway.

You could see it for yourself if you had a DV TV and weren't watching HDR via a computer.

I have the DV tv. Just not a player. (HDR via PC is on par with the best players for the record. It just doesn't afford me DV capability. Yet.)
I believe you, I just wanted to see it.

Try these on for size, Rusty. It's not ED2 but from The Fog, during the moment when Blake fades away after grabbing the cross, one of the last frames before he disappears which is why they're quite dim.

As opposed to the grain looking a bit funky it's got some very chunky artefacting so you should be able to see the differences a bit better. Exact same frame on both, slight colour/brightness diff is just down to the exposure on the camera.

HDR10

DV

Wow that is a pretty substantial difference. The transfer certainly looks less "botched" now with the terrible compression mostly fixed. The cross looks like it has more evenly distributed colour in DV, whereas on the HDR10 it looks blotchy. The DV looks way more pleasing. The "glow" around the cross also looks to be much better rendered in DV.

I did a lot of research into the TV I bought (thank god) but my UHD player was more of an impulse buy and I only later realized that it doesn't support DV. I have a Samsung M8500, so that needs to change ASAP. Black Friday is coming up...

Is it a relatively new thing for UHD players to support DV? Only seems like specific models do. I'm just wondering if Samsung might plan on releasing a firmware update that includes DV support.

What do you mean? Like companies will stop supporting DV instead of adopting it?

I'm not so sure about that (if that's what you meant) I feel like the opposite is happening.

Yet their N850/N950 bars support DV passthrough? I know, confusing.

If they just added DV to their flagship QLED they'd have a sale.

It does indeed. It doesn't make the compression absolutely perfect in The Fog as it still goes a bit squirly if you look for it, but it's as I said: the absolute worst bits are now palatable rather than VCD quality, the middling bits now look fine at first glance and the rest looks glorious.

As I said, the colour/brightness differences shouldn't be taken as seen owing to the camera exposure but I can assure everyone that the differences in compression are most definitely accurate.

I think they're still mastering with DV at source, they're just not releasing it as such on disc.

Heads up. The Lionsgate 4K will likely be the same disc as the StudioCanal 4K steelbook. Also, the 1080p movie disc in the UK 4K set has the new master.

Does the blu ray included in the 4k set have all the same abundant extras as the 25th anniversary blu ray?

the still new recent digital codes on the paper inserts that come with the 4K Evil Dead

its like getting a lottery scratch ticket.

Most of the time they're duds anyway.

Later this week Ill try entering the digital redeem code again or wait until next week. Im not in a rush. Besides all the main bonus features are on the extra plain blu ray disc anyway which I like better anyway

I recived the steel from zavvi and I sample the disc... the image looks nice in DV but itīs a shame the audio itīs super low and I think itīs the same as the bluray

I watched this in full this evening.

Really superb IMHO. Definite benefit over the old remastered Blu and I noticed little make-up quirks I never had before. Good dynamic range. As I've posted before, my LG 2016 LED can struggle with DV encodes but it was very well behaved here and never once annoyed me with shifting black levels.

The shot mentioned previously in this thread with the spurious colour in Ash's eyes was obvious but is clearly a softer dupe shot in motion and not indicative of the transfer.

No issues with low volume whatsoever. Playing devil's advocate, I have my AVR calibrated with light DRC due to my living arrangements, so maybe they just mastered it with zero DRC whereas most other studios do?

What does strike me though is just how much the clever original sound design here would have genuinely benefited from an Atmos upgrade, unlike the first which still sounds totally satisfying in 5.1. Reusing the old 5.1 seems like a wasted opportunity.

Me extra was good, a new angle that hasn't been done before. Existing extras cover the cast and crew stuff.

This is just personal preference but I adore the Zavvi exclusive steelbook art. Yes, the playing card motif is strange but it works. Makes me think if it was first commissioned as a double feature but cancelled, given how the playing cards only feature in the first movie.
