Really can't wait for this to be released.. I think this is going to be one of the best examples of whether 4k is going to improve Disney animated movies. Still not convinced animated movies benefit much from 4k. If Disney does amazing re-masters across the board, then I'll double dip without question. We all know there are movies that could use new masters... However, with the same masters.. my expectations are low.

I'm just curious to know if this will get an Atmos remix and that they don't muck it up

The titles they've remixed (The Incredibles and The Avengers) have terrific Atmos remixes.
It's the near field mixes of recent native Atmos films that have been timid.

Very true - I hope Disney can keep up the newer remixes - it'd be nice if a remix of Lion King could retain the bass heavy power that the laserdisc had, the LFE on both the DVD and Blu-ray don't have that oomph

Shit happens. ILM's current packages could no longer read the VFX files for Phantom Menace so they couldn't re-render the VFX. They could still read the 2K digital files used for the filmout so they went with those.

According to Wikipedia they kept a CAPS system for reading original files. I hope that's true:

Quote:
Following the box office under-performance of films such as Treasure Planet in 2002 and Home on the Range in 2004, Disney Feature Animation's management team (like DreamWorks Animation) were convinced that audiences much favored 3D computer animated features and closed down their traditional 2D animation department (until 2007 when Lasseter stepped in as the studio's new head of management and called for its reopening).

The CAPS desks were removed and the custom automated scanning cameras were dismantled and scrapped. As of 2005, only one desk system remained (and that was only for reading the data for the films that were made with CAPS).

I agree. I bought the Lion King first on Video-tape. Replaced it by Laser disc, DVD and Blu Ray. Every up date was a (big) step forward in quality.
Now I own a Sony 4K tv and the Sony 4K player since this year. I have a couple 4K movies: Cars 3 Sing Coco.... I really don’t see much approvement from blu to 4K
New movies like Fantastic beast ....same.
And even some “old titles” like Grease and Labyrinth don.t impress me much
So in that case i’mdisappointed In 4K
Only big step forward are older DVD’s. On my tv and player some are uplifted and look almost like blu Ray!!

Poor equipment, bad settings or bad eyesight.

Poor equipment? The latest Sony releases?/
Bad settings? Could be but in every other format replacement it didn’t depend on The settings” to see a giant leap in quality enhancement!
Bad eyesight? I can see the big big differences between dvd and blu Ray

So... sorry, but your derogatory remark leave me cold. It was just giving a reply to an other person who, just like myself, isn’t flabbergasted about 4K

And to go back to the subject: I bought this movie 5 times already (Incl. 3D) so I want to check it out first before buying it for the 6th time....

Sorry if my reply seemed rude, but I was just trying to make the point that there's no way discs like Labyrinth are disappointing or don't look like upgrades. I'm letting all the lurkers know that your experience is not the norm, and likely due to equipment or eyesight. It just is what it is.

Walt and Roy shot Snow White in single-strip successive exposure, and yes, they have the original negative, they just don't want to touch it unless they absolutely have to.

Off topic, I'm still rankled about the YCM 1990 restoration of Fantasia, where some brain vacant jackass decided to go ahead with using RAZOR BLADES on the original camera negative to remove wood emulsion and artifacts. Yeah. That happened. Razor blades. On the original SE camera neg of Fantasia. Then duped in black levels to hide cel dust and crawl. Greatest demo reel for animation of all time, you're five decades down the signal chain, you whip out a razor blade to remove production artifacts from the actual original camera neg...

I'm afried it is. And i have a properly calibrated LG OLED65E6V (one of the best TV's ever made IMO) and my eyesight is excellent.

I have a couple dozen 4k releases and i can barely tell the difference between them and the old blu-rays. I suspect part of it is because my TV does such a cracking job of upscaling my blu-rays up.

The only films i could actually see a proper uptick was both Deadpool movies

Something is wrong. May be your television’s low nits. OLED’S have gotten better in this respect. I have no experience with how your television tone maps though otherwise. But when so many others can agree that HDR makes a notable difference on the releases you mentioned, you can’t say there isn’t a difference. You have to figure you’re the factor that, for some reasom, isn’t alligned.

2016 OLEDs are not good HDR televisions really. In any event, you guys have an opinion and obviously I can't refute that. Again though, I'm trying to make it clear to the "audience" that your opinion is in a very small minority on here.
