I think Panorama should also be presented with this.
The fact that Panorama put out that upscale in the midst of all of the 2K remasters coming out is absurd. And the caps-a-holic comparison really shows just how abysmal the previous "restoration" was. Though on the bright side, it makes me look forward to more 2K restorations from the 80s... (*sits impatiently for both cuts of Righting Wrongs to be restored*)

As far as they're concerned they got 1080 masters. I don't know if they have to pay to receive a new one or they just used an older one and didn't bother/weren't aware.

What I do find absurd is the seemingly passive response by releasing more of the same, because it doesn't reflect well on them (most won't want to put out/be associated with a sub-par product). Aside from their customers possibly complaining, doesn't anyone responsible for the mastering (or elsewhere in the company) think, "Hmm, these look a bit shite. Maybe I should give them a heads-up so they can take action." That said, we've seen a lack of QC for sometime, so it doesn't surprise me.

It's unfortunate for audiences in Hong Kong and those who are region-locked, but it's thanks to the likes of Eureka and 88 who buck the 'auto-pilot' trend of distributors.

Would you happen to know if the Tiger Cage films have gotten a restoration?

Thanks for the support, guys.

Mr. Vampire is also one of my favourites and I would never intentionally put out a bad translation of it (or anything else). If I make a mistake I'm the first hold my hand up to it. Mistakes have happened, but each time I work I try to do the best job I can. Are the subs perfect? No. Are they better than what you would have got otherwise? Yes, definitely. Time was an issue on Mr. Vampire, hence the problems with the burial scene that could have otherwise been ironed out - it's worth reiterating out that three translators checked that scene before Dylan noticed something was awry. And whilst I don't excuse the mistakes, Taoist rituals and references aren't the easiest thing to turn into comprehensible English. That's why most subtitles tend to either generalise or make the details up. My commitment to not repeating that has allowed these errors to creep in. For that I apologise and hope to do better next time.

Exactly this, as it's set in ancient time unless you have a good understanding of this topic it is pretty difficult to translate it into something coherent in English.

We all live and learn from our mistakes and hope not to repeat them again in future releases.

Anyone have other feedback on the technical aspects of the Disc?

Yeah, actually I do. Detail, texture and colour are excellent. Low light can get somewhat grainy, and black levels can be a bit light in many instances (probably the film stock used), but everything looks beautifully organic and unmolested. Couldn't be happier. Wish you guys could have seen what this looks like on a projection screen upscaled through madVR. The level of detail in this transfer is surprising. Looks way better than what you'd see in a cinema on opening night.

I listened on a limited setup and won't comment on the sound.

I'm moving this one up my buy list because I'm fond of the genre and happy to see the amount of care and attention being lavished on these titles. ZU WARRIRORS is in the post, so probably this and the recent Sammo Hung collection will be next.

It's so cool to see these titles finally being done correctly so thank you to everyone involved, including the excellent folk posting here.

I like HK cinema, but I really don't like HK comedies. Would I like this?

I think this is MORE approachable than the average HK comedy. By that I mean there is still the typical HK comedy stuff there, which you probably won't like, but there's plenty of stuff (physical comedy and general cleverness above the typical HK stuff) left over to enjoy. The horror elements really add to it as well and make it feel unique.

Depends on your taste but I think so. I think the comedy works well for the most part, especially now that there are properly translated subs. I can show this film to friends and always get a positive reaction.

I'm not a big fan of comedies in general, but the mix of comedy and horror in this film is very entertaining. Think Ghostbusters or a less scary Fright Night.

when Germany asked about Tiger Cage Licencing (1 week ago, that is), Fortune Star said "not realistic for 2021 as a new 2K or 4K scan", i hope this is not correct

That's probably about right looking at my spread sheet for the upcoming releases there are still quite a few films currently being restored and believe me there's alot coming in 2021.

Eventually we will get to the Tiger Cage films
and hopefully alot more.

I have a few surprises I'm trying to push
through as well.

Ok I love this. Now question: is there a chance that Eureka will also release the other Mr. Vampire Movies? I kinda hope they also focus on other Hong Kong horror movies too. Would also love to see Bless this House and Devil Fetus get a blu treatment.
