Try turning the brightness, contrast and sharpness down on your TV. Do some test paterns if you have them (maybe even on a THX certified DVD). Hopefully that helps a little...

Have you tried outputting different resolutions to see if it still does it? If you're set to output 1080i, deselect that res and keep 720p selected. Have you output the same resolution you're using now to your tv from any source other than the PS3 without problems?

I remember someone complaining about this when using 1080i output on their 720p native display.

I've tried both 720p and 1080i, and yes, I have a Sony BDP-S1 that displays all shades of black (when the limited black level is selected, as that is for DVI displays). Has anyone else actually tested to see if all shades of black are there, or is everyone just assuming?

I read somewhere that you can use PS3 to watch backup of BD movies on external hard drive ?
Can I make backup of my BD and store it on my network HD and play it from PS3 ?

Is there any way to identify a PS3 via model number or serial number

1. Which factory it was made in - to get the better (quieter) 19 blade fan
2, Which box has the 65nm CPU - less heat and less noise

Thanks

AFAIK there's no 65nm version. The XBOX 360 on the other hand is supposed to get a 65nm revision sometime late this year.

^^^65nm revisions of Cell and RSX are in the pipe with Cell set to get the reduction first. No eta on when they will be shipped in retail models as far as I know. Let me see if I can dig up some links.

Edit:
These articles are from March when the announcement was first made. I imagine the 65nm Cell chips should be ready to go early next year if not sooner - provided the 90nm stock is sold through by that time.

The PS3 supports certain types of movie files. If the backup is part of that, it would play.

Probably but backing up may not work in the future. You also need a BD-ROM drive to create the backup on the PC.

Default Help: PS3 7.1 PCM Audio Output Issues

I just noticed today that my PS3 is outputting the PCM 7.1 audio very strangely. For instance whenever I'm playing these BD (Waiting, Daddy's Little Girls, the Avengers) my left speakers are TOTALLY SILENT and the dialogues that were supposed to be directed to the Center Channel are being heard on the Right Surround Back Channel.
It has the latest firmware. My SACDs are playing great (all 8 channels respond well). I don't know if I am the only one experiencing this problem. Does anyone have a clue about what's going on?
I still have 8 days left to exchange it!

PS3 Exchanged Aug. 10 '07. Same problem. I think I will have my AV Receiver checked with the Sony People to see if it is the cause. In the mean time, anyone using the same AV Receiver as mine ever experienced such inconvenience? Give me an update, I'll appreciate it.

To Anyone: Need a UPC from the PS3? I'll help!

i was wondering, does the PS3 support lossless audio, like im pretty sure it can do Dolby TrueHD, but what about DTS-HD, and if not, does anyone know what update or when it will, thanks

The PS3 does decode Dolby TrueHD and outputs PCM. Supposedly within the next few months the PS3 will get an upgrade to decode DTS-HDMA, but that's just a rumor so far.

Wait... How many 8 Channel SACD's are there? If it's sending that via 5.1 PCM and you're doing the EX/IIx on the reciever itself, that'd be totally different than recieving 7.1 discrete channels. What happens with 5.1 PCM tracks? Are you sure youre reciever actually supports 7.1 PCM?

Let's deal with the basics. When you do a channel test ON THE RECEIVER ITSELF, do you get the appropriate channel separation?

When you do a channel test on a DVD (usually a THX DVD will have the sound calibration setup) with your HDMI connection for sound, do you get the appropriate channel separation?

Both ps-3's work great...though 1's in a cool basement while the other's in
upstairs in a warmer room.
My first was bought back on jan 2nd while when i heard about the software
backwards compatability i knew i needed a 2nd 60 G before they were gone.

The first thing i did was use my original account
on the 2nd system. I had to put a small fan against a vent to blow cool air
on the new system. For some reason the central air is winter-basement,comfortable-first floor and hot upstairs where it just trickles out so hence the fan which pulls the cool air over to my new ps-3.

They're both hooked up in HDMI to HDTV'S though the upstairs is a smaller
bedroom size lcd. I have sony's digital surround headphones because my
surround sound gear's downstairs and i can still enjoy surround without wrath ,i hear enough when i've fired up my dual 12 inch sub for 300 or other action movies.

If there's something i'd like to see in a firmware update i'd be enabling as many video / audio output's as i want at the same time.
That way component, hdmi and toslink would all work without the flip floping.
I can have the audio output in hdmi OR switch to toslink to use the headphones but not both-if both were set up when i wanted to use the headphones grab em and when i was just needing the flash slots the tv would be fine. We can hope.

If you have tons of ps-2 titles even if you have a ps-3 already i'd consider getting another 1 before the software emulation horrs began with the 80 G
model.

I don't know what you meant in the last part... Does your reciever not let you use headphones with HDMI?

I'm using the STR-DA 7100ES (170w x 7 )_ (5.1 & 7.1 direct inputs respectively). I did all the tests. Actually I used the DVD CarbonEdge Pro Laser Lens cleaner & Home Theatre Diagnostic. All speakers work well. SACD _ BD PCM 5/6.1 work fine. But once I put " Daddy's Little Girls" "Waiting" etc. (PCM 7.1) Speakers: Front/Surround/Surround Back Left Channels are SHUT.
SACD 5.1 via HDMI: All 8 speakers respond through PS3; SACD via 5.1 rca cables 6 channels sound OK through my DENON DVD. I don't know why it does not want to decode PCM 7.1 channels properly. It's crazy.
I haven't got time to contact SONY yet.
But I will do soon.

I did all the tests. No Separation issues. All speakers work well. SACD 2.0/5.1 _ BD PCM 5/6.1 work fine. But once I put " Daddy's Little Girls" "Waiting" etc. (PCM 7.1) Speakers: Front/Surround/Surround Back Left Channels are SHUT.
I think the problem is PCM 7.1 Channels, because all the others: 2.0 --> 6.1 PCM
Just this year I started to have problems with SONY COMPONENTS. My Bravia is out for Repair for a line that appears at the bottom of the screen everytime it is fed with a 1080p signal, no problem with720p~1080i. I've been using Sony for more than 20 years. Looks like it's time to switch to something else. I'm thinking DENON right now.
HDMI Cables used for the tests: Sony, Monster Cable, Belkin.
