It's an older Belkin model. I realize it's supposed to take the hit, but I've always been told by electricians that NO unit can save your stuff from a direct hit, and I know this hit was very very close. Also It's possible the hit came in through the cable and spread out through the cable box. I didn't have the cable ran through the surge protector because it degraded the signal so much. As far as the sub goes, it was just plugged into a regular wall outlet because it sits in the back of the room away from everything else.

I may still look into getting a new one before too long. Any recommendations? Preferably not Monster......

And now that I think of it, I lost a printer too. LOL

ETA: For logistical reasons it would need to be the type that can sit in a shelf in my HT stand where everything plugs into the back of it. The kind where everything plugs into the top won't work.

It's funny that you mentioned not by Monster because all three of the units I use here are by them ..................I have a

HTS-3500 in my Stereophonic Parlor of Bliss
HTS-3600 MKII in my Office system
EP IR-3650 in my Main theater setup

Now honestly for me those units have seemed to work well and they have never been tripped but ............ If I were to do it over again I would probably buy units from either Furman or Panamax .............. The units can get up there in price though .....

One of the reasons I went with Monster in the first place *

But I'd never buy cables from them.............

*
[Show spoiler]Matter of fact ........ They stopped making their component type units anyway

Hi Steve,

Being in a area with numerous thunderstorms your best defense would be to install a Whole House Surge Protector, which is installed by a licence Electrician directly into you electrical panel and then also have the HT system on a secondary power conditioner/surge protector. The whole house protector would run around $500 but is much better at catching very large surges.

I'm not familiar with Furman but I know of Panamax and they definitely get quite expensive. I'll look into Furman.

You're not the first person to tell me that. I need to look into it.

Hey there Steve. My best friend is a master electrician and has encountered this problem quite a bit after these thing's happen. Living in Dallas/Ft.Worth area we see numerous super cell thunderstorm's/tornado's. The only thing a home owner can do is install the Whole Home Protection at the Box. It's fairly affordable and work's pretty good, however it work's better for the major appliance's. It still work's for everything plugged into the home's wall outlet's, but he tell's me that these electronic's still need's to be hooked into the line conditioner's/surge protector's. My electrician friend has the whole home protection installed at his box, and a fancy console Panamax for his Audio/Video/Computer component's. There is one more thing you can do that cost nothing, which is UNPLUG the component's from the outlet's, period. Not turn them off, but UNPLUG THEM. In your case Steve, the whole home set up along with the power/surge protector's would not have helped you much at all, if any. Your lightning strike was much too close by damaging so many thing's at once for anything to help it. Luckily insurance served you well .

I appreciate the follow-up. I really need to look into having the whole home protection installed. At least we have good insurance. We didn't have any problems at all with the claim and the guy who took care of replacement components was awesome to work with. For example, the old TV was a 55" 3D model but I didn't care about getting 3D in the new one. I asked if I could trade a feature for screen size and the answer was "Absolutely!" He said people do that kind of thing all the time so we got a 65" model this time around. Our claims agent told us that she was dealing with quite a few claims all at the same time for the same thing while ours was going on.

It's funny I grew up with my mom making me and my sister unplug the TV (wall outlet and cable) every time there was a storm. It's not that we had a great TV or anything. We just couldn't really afford to replace it if anything happened to it. In the summer we would unplug everything if we were leaving the house for the day because it's so common to get these thunderstorms that seem to pop up out of nowhere in the afternoon.

Hi Steve,

Furman is now owned by Panamax and I believe they are or tend to be Panamax' more expensive line.

I am using 3 of the Panamax M5400-PM units.

Thanks. I was looking at them online and they are a bit pricey.
