Maybe this unnecessary remake will now not happen.

It certainly could use a remake.
the TV movie was pretty good and all but far from perfect.
They would need at lest 2 films or a season long miniseries to do justice to the book.
I do hope they get an older actor for Pennywise now

Cary Fukunaga did a fantastic job with True Detective. I'm sure he would've done an amazing IT update. Such a shame.

****ing studios ruining everything as usual.

No Fukunaga, no interest for now. The studio is trying to condense the two films into one, among other things. What a mess. This could have been something special with him at the helm.

I didn't because Pennywise can not be played by anyone else. Curry made it too iconic of a role. Anything else would be a huge letdown.

The made for TV movie was OK with one excellent performance. To say that the TV movie could not be outdone is ridiculous. this fukunaga news does suck but let's see who they get to replace him.
The new Mad Max is nowhere in the same league as Mel Gibson. I never thought Nicholson's Joker was that great even back in 89. Why? Because Jack was just playing jack..same as he did in The Shining, same as he did in One Flew. Go back and try some better comparisons. It was made iconic, even if it was television. It would be just like someone else trying to play Mangum P.I. or someone trying to play J.R. Ewing. Can you imagine a remake of the 83 Scarface without Al? I mean come on, some roles are never meant to be recreated.

The examples are showing that people say this stuff all the time. You're getting butthurt over someone very capable (at least in the case of fukunaga) doing another adaptation of a book. To dump on them casting pennywise with someone who isn't Tim curry without even seeing a frame of the film is ridiculous.
Actually no I'm really not. The mini series itself was just so so back in 90. The ending was pathetic (and if that part of the story does not change then why do it?) The point I am making is that sometimes roles are made iconic by a particular actor. Not sure you seem to be understanding that. Did you even see the original? Could that new actor pull off the comedy of Pennywise in a scary macabre way? I highly doubt it. And way to ignore the other "TV" roles I mentioned.

He is quite talented, but I also hear he is a pain the a$$ to work with and can't get along with Nic Pizzolatto...which is why he was not asked back for S2 of True Detective.

And of course he is not happy about the studios getting cold feet on this IT remake and wanting to make one movie, not two. Which if you were an investor/production company, it might be the smarter thing to do business wise to avoid losing money.

On another note, Sin Nombre is still the work I like the best of his. Hopefully he will stop pissing off key people in Hollywood so he can have a lasting career.

I don't know what happened between Fukunaga and Pizzolato, never read anything about a disagreement between them during TD, so I can't discuss his attitude in that case.

As for IT, I think he's doing what all directors should do in this industry.
A movie should be a director's product, not what studios and investors think it should be. If they won't let him stick to his vision, then goodbye, find somebody else. He shouldn't attach his name to something he doesn't fully agree with.

And if they think making two feature films could be a waste of money, they need to find another book to adapt. It's impossible to adapt IT into one film and be faithful to the story. Anyone who read the book knows this. But I'm sure these people who only care about money don't even know what the story is about.
Studios should really start thinking about putting quality work over profit. Quality work usually makes profit, the other way around I'm not so sure.

Project officially shelved indefinitely/ shut down:

seems crazy for New line to be so crazy about this project when the budget was only $30 million

Glad they shut er down!

Now they need to do a two part film of "The Stand". No iconic role in that mini series.

They're turning The Stand into a four part movie series.

So disappointing to hear. I was really looking forward to this. Already 3/4th's into the audio book.

Well... if only HBO would also pick this up and make it a 4 part mini series, that would be perfect.

Was watching Tomorrowland over the weekend, thought Raffey Cassidy (Athena) would make a wonderful Beverly Marsh if she can do an American accent.

This Memorial Day news broke that “True Detective” director Cary Fukunaga had exited the latest film adaptation of the Stephen King’s It.

The stories cited creative differences, which included Fukunaga’s desire to direct in New York, while the studio wanted to cut costs by sending Pennywise to other locations. It was also said that one of the reasons for the budget concerns may have been the lukewarm opening Poltergeist, which also heavily used a clown in their marketing.

Anyhow, filming was to take place this summer, and thus was postponed indefinitely.

From the sounds of things, it would appear that It was dead. Or is it…

Well, good news, folks, as we’re told exclusively that Pennywise may be rising up from the sewers!

A source from the inside is telling us that the project is heading back to Warner Bros. (it was shifted to New Line during budget cuts), and that It will now be filming in New York.

Even weirder is that Warners is expected to sign a new director in the coming weeks, and are currently meeting with candidates. It sounds as if “budget cuts” was just an excuse wrapped around a deeper issue between Fukunaga and the studio…

We’re told that he current expectation is that Warners will move forward with the existing It scripts and New York locations for filming later this year.

It will be two separate films, one which tackled the protagonists as children and the second film to focus on them as adults.

No word on if Will Poulter is still cast to play the villainous clown “Pennywise”.
