Screw it.

I love Mission Impossible 2 so much, I am going to cancel my usual Friday The 13th Blu-ray marathon today. Instead, I am going to watch the M: I 2 UHD right now (despite the fact I have only just seen it last week)!

I fully endorse this recklessness.

I’m slowly getting through the 4k releases, watched GP last night and that transfer is the pick of the bunch so far, really good. I’ll have the fifth watched by the time Fallout hits cinemas. For some reason I struggled when watching 1 and 2. 3 was when the excitement kicked in for me.

International 35mm prints were uncut.

Only a couple of seconds were actually removed, IIRC.

There was a list on-line somewhere.

The opening neck break had its sound muted (that's the one I noticed between cinema and DVD viewings).

The kneecapping had a few frames removed, as did a kick to face from the final fight.

Much harder to spot, I'd imagine.

Noticed some weird stuff, though. Particularly later in the film. Around the 1:25:00 mark while Cruise and Voight are having a little convo Voight’s skin tone goes from normal living human to deathly ill pale after one of the cuts. Just a few minutes later when Ethan finds Claire chilling in the corner of the room there’s a weird shakiness to the image that made me feel queasy.

Still, all in all this was a wonderfully filmic and finely textured presentation. It’s a shame that Kristin Scott Thomas departs so soon since those early close-ups are truly lovely.

[Show spoiler]Edit: Not going to dwell on this but by some miracle I was able to watch two movies tonight and good gosh Mi2 is a clumsy nightmare.
Yes, I noticed the deathly pale skin tones on Voight there but it works for the scene, considering he's pretending to be at death's door. See how he's sweating as well? I think those pills he keeps popping in that scene are what's making him look like that, it's another means to dupe Ethan.

As for the 'skittishness' in the other scene I clocked that too, and there are several shots in Mi2 that also have the same kind of lateral instability. AFAIK it's due to the actual camera they were using at the time having a slight registration problem so the film isn't being shuttled through the mechanism as stably as it could be. It comes and goes from shot to shot when Tony Hopkins is talking about the mission, for example, because one angle used the gammy camera and the other angles didn't. It's just one of those things.

I saw the international, it's not the unrated print.
A ton was cut ordered by the mpaa

Why didn’t they make a box set available in the US for these? I am surprised by that

I scored today. Went to Best Buy to pick up a store pick up item, so I took a stroll around. Saw two pristine, slipped copies of MI:1 and MI:3 just sitting on a cart with some other blus. Don't know what they were doing there, but I bought them. $19.99 each. My set is now complete.

Supposedly the original film was 3,5 hours and R-rated according to IMDb.

Just imagine that.

Too bad that version or even a workprint never leaked.

Workprints don't count for much; they're unfinished and never get rated.

I'd like to know more about those full MPAA cuts and why only a few trims made it back into the international version.

From memory, virtually every shootout in the movie is heavily edited for violence to secure a PG-13 rating. In some scenes you can still spot some of the blood squibs on the bad guys clothing.

Also the finale between Cruise and Scott was a lot longer with more motorcycle action and fighting.

It would be so awesome to see Woo's original vision, but that will probably never happen.

Always feels half the movie is missing when watching it

I don't think MI 2 feels like "half the movie is missing". It feels pretty complete as is.

Meh it's a good action movie with bags of style. It's always been an entertaining watch even if it sticks out like a sore thumb in terms of style with the rest of the franchise.

I'd love to see Mi2 with the violence restored, that bit when Ambrose kicks Hunt in the face would be great if we could, y'know, actually see him kick him in the face.
