"It's going to take 5 hours to get drunk on that monkey piss"

Why did I post that quote from the film in my heading, well that's easy. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is long, really, goddamn long.

It relentlessly punishes the ill-patient, and hangs the people who fail to follow the plot. It's the very definition of an anti-mainstream film, any typical part-time filmgoers are going to be tortured non-stop for the 2 hours 10 minutes the film goes on for. But, maybe, just maybe, I underestimate everyone, and they will enjoy the film as much as me, and my two friends. (Because out of a large group of 50 or so close friends, only 1 wanted to watch it, and out of his 50 or so close friends, only one wanted to watch it, you see my doubts).

Hopefully, the salvation of these people who might struggle to follow the film is the huge fact that it is visually hypnotising, I often found myself in awe at how well framed the film was, I can't think of a single shot that didn't look great in the entire film. It is a film which has each frame of it tailor made (haha!) to both look eerie, dark and gloomy, while also looking beautiful, and this is all while staying restrictive to look like a product of 1960's spy thrillers, and not a modern day film (excluding a few parts of mediocre CGI).

Once you get past it visually, you look at it intellectually, you will see a fantastically structured multi-layered plot, that does zero pandering to the audience, and forces them to look into the subtleties of the screen, causing you to be once again, hypnotised. I'll come clean and I will say I did get a few characters names mixed up, which caused a bit of confusion between dialogue and actions on screen, but if anything this only makes me want to watch it again, especially considering that ending.

All throughout the film, I kept seeing my friend whip out his phone to check the time, now although he said he found the film amazing, he was still having to check how much longer the film has to go for. I had a similar feeling, although the film is amazing, and sitting there I was being wowed by it. There was a thought that entered my brain half an hour towards the end that said, ok, pull out your big guns and blow me away film, or else you are not worth my time. The more you sit there, the more you think that the climax better impress you. The good news is that the film doesn't change pace, it doesn't loose it's way, it does it ending it's way and it does it terrifically. It seals the deal as a piece of terrific filmmaking, and sets the bar very high for the Oscars next year.

Icing on the cake, the acting.

This is a film that is choke full of great actors, all doing great acting work. I think they would all deserve to be nominated, but the star that come through the best to me is Mark Strong, for the very powerful emotions he has to deal with throughout the film, and a far deeper mystery behind his character that is not really shown, but heavily implied. However everyone is fantastic, Tom Hardy comes a close second.

And Gary Oldman has that Best Actor nod in the bag, to early to tell if he has got the award, but at the moment, he's a safe bet. He plays Smiley, a mild-mannered although very drained retired MI6 agent who is a part of the circus (the people who deal with foreign intelligence, for those not in the know, which you will need to be), his acting, like most the film, is very subtle, and you can tell that he is very much effected by the revelation that one of his colleges is a spy, and the fact that he was believed to be as well.

Thomas Alfredson is quickly become one of the great modern directors with one of the most fresh and distinctive styles in cinema, comparisons between this and his debut film, Let The Right One In, are through his style. Ironically enough, one of the problems I had with Let The Right One In is that you focus so much on the subtitles, you miss all the fantastic visuals and cinematography.

So I'll say it again, Tinker Tailor Solider Spy is hypnotising to watch, you literally can not take your eyes of the screen throughout it's entire runtime. You can not zone out for a second for the fear that you will be prosecuted by the film for doing so. Tinker Tailor knows it's for adults, for film lovers, and for people who just generally want to see it, and by doing that it rewards them for treating them that very way, you just better get ready and expect that once it hits, or else your going to fell that arse get numb on that seat for an extremely long 2 hours 10 mins.

Not my fave film of the year, but definitely one of the best!

10/10

Beautiful cinematography, gripping storyline, great acting, and brief moments of mediocre CGI. Sounds like Alfredson, alright. Now, to wait for, oh, about three more months.

-Everything about the film is perfect, from the Solo/Leah chemistry to Solo/Chewy and Solo/C3PO dialogue, to the imperial walker action, to Vader's presence.
-I also love the varying settings from snow planets, to swamp planets to sky cities. I guess all of the SW films have this, but this was a great variety.

PQ: 4.5/5 (almost perfect. a few imperfections that were few and far inbetween)

AQ: 5/5 (I'm going out on a limb and say this is one of the best 5 blu-rays I've heard!)

wait... what is this? a movie review?! from bearcat?!?!

that's correct!

for the first time in months i have watched a film! what crazy madness is this???

turns out, i picked a winner
a 410 blind buy from wal-mart, i walked away incredibly impressed. incredibly funny, some seriously shockingly gross but not super gross (but could have been! ) scenes, some memorable one liners and a realllllll super hot lead (alice eve ) made this a resounding success.

hell, it even has a message (although we get it way at the end in a super rushed final act) that makes complete sense. that message? most guys ruin any chance with a super hottie because they have low self esteem, talk themselves down and judge themselves against everyone / anyone who walks into a room. so instead of going for it and TRYING, they just sigh in the corner and sulk in their drink and mope to their friends about how their lives suck.

hell, while watching this i was like, "hey, this reminds me of James... and Paul... and Mike... and Scott... and Alex... and Dave... and..." lol the list goes on and on.

and while not every doofus will get a super 10 hottie (some are only about money, nice cars and how hot the other person is) not every super hot girl is completely out of reach! hell, i know this for a fact because i look at pictures of my super hot ex-girlfriend and i and i know this is possible

very glad i picked this up. the 6.5 on imdb is understandable but still disappointing.

then again, i have a soft spot for chick flicks and feel good films like this

4/5

I blind bought this when it first came out and I enjoyed it as well.

I have to give it points for choosing to have it from the guy's perspective and to also even take a somewhat unique spin on some of the usual cliches
[Show spoiler]like the ending where she races to the airport because she doesn't want him to go and he then runs through the airport to get to her. The fact that he had to also run away from his ex in the process was a nice and humorous spin.

One can't talk about the movie without mentioning the scene where
[Show spoiler]they are about to have sex and he prematurely ejaculates while she is on top of him. Then her dog promptly decides to start licking there.

With my watching of the Star Wars trilogy, I'm going to probably write up a review of them later on or tomorrow. I remember reviewing them in the very early days of the thread, but it's been over a year and with some shiny new discs, perhaps I should write up some shiny new reviews

But here's one I watched today that still stands:

I saw this movie about six years ago and enjoyed it. But after all that time I really didn't remember much about it besides that it was about Tom Hanks being stuck in an airport.

Tom Hanks plays Victor who is on his way to New York but gets detained at the airport because his country's government is overthrown and he is a citizen of nowhere..."unacceptable." In his time here he adjusts to his situation, forms bonds with employees at the airport and even finds a special someone (Zeta-Jones).

The story is quite simple, and it works incredibly well. The balance between drama and comedy is absolutely perfect. There is never a portion of the film that is overly serious or a portion that is comedic when it feels inappropriate. Everything clicks into place and runs incredibly smoothly for the entire duration of the film.

The situations that Victor is placed into and his interactions with the characters are all executed well and by the end
[Show spoiler]when he is leaving the airport and all the people in the airport are following him to the door you are (or at least I was) about him finally getting into New York to get the signature for his late father.

Regarding the comedy...it is absolutely hilarious. I had to pause the movie several times because I couldn't stop laughing and was not hearing what was being said next

Tom Hanks is fantastic as Victor. I could elaborate on that but...that sums it up. He was fantastic.

I really enjoy everyone in the movie actually. From the grumpy janitor to incredible attractive stewardess, everyone single one of the major supporting characters (did I just create a new category? ) is interesting and well played during the dramatic moments and the comedic moments. I don't have a single complaint about any of them.

And what makes them even better is that they all work very well with Hanks on screen.

I really have no real complaints about this movie that I can think of. Which is rare because there are things that I dislike about my favorite movies; so I love it when a film comes along and I don't have a single problem with it no matter if its tiny or significant. But it is one of those movies that for some reason does not get a 5/5, even with me having no problems with the film.

Rating - 4.75/5

Okay, it’s my second attempt at this film, and somehow I managed to sit through the whole thing…

Next greatest rental: “Caligula” Unrated.

At first glance, this appears to be a historical epic with an all-star cast and a quality production value, but do not be fooled. Coming from Penthouse Films, this film is forever notorious for its rampant, unbridled, and arguably tasteless scenes of sexual perversity and bloody violence (sometimes at the same time). While not quite as disturbing or frequent as “Salo,” “Caligula” does show much more than any other film I’ve seen; it can either be seen as weak pornography or a very sick epic.

The movie suffers some long drag in between the most perverse scenes. But when the perversity hits, it becomes something of an endurance test, to see just how much disgusting crap you can put up with. There are orgies aplenty, all featuring hardcore sex, and often with some weird or disturbing twist (like having a double-faced three-eyed lady in the mix). As far as the violence goes, there are just a few sick scenes, but they are the kind of thing that’ll make you go “DAAAAAMMMMMNNNN!!!!!”

Unfortunately, all of these scenes are completely frivolous, and could have rightfully been cut out of the film (and I believe many of them are in the R-rated cut). Without these scenes, however, the film loses all of its shock value, and every other scene that follows is not quite as interesting. It can be interesting to see the main character’s frequent show of madness, but there is absolutely no story behind this. There is no conflict to speak of. There are a handful of marginally-developed characters, but it’s hard to relate to any of them. As far as any actual theme goes, it is inherently interesting to see the main character’s corruption and madness, but the film fails to deliver anything meaningful. As for its historical accuracy, a quick look at Wikipedia reveals just how one-sided this film is, so forgetaboutit!

The film itself has okay photography and editing. It does show proper ambition with its huge and lavish sets, props, and costumes. Acting is a bit of a mixed bag; I did enjoy Malcom McDowell as the main character, and I believe he is the film’s most redeeming value. Peter O’Toole seemed a little too nutty, I didn’t mind Teresa Ann Savoy, John Gielgud, or Helen Mirran in their roles, but everybody else is, just like, whatever. Writing can be interesting. And the film’s use of classical music feels very arbitrary.

2/5 (entertainment: 3/5, story: 0.5/5, film: 2/5)

Recommendation: Uhhhhh…recommending this is like recommending a root canal for fun. Watch at your own risk.

Given certain source limitations, this film will always look soft and hazy, but the Blu-Ray generally looks better than I thought it would. Some parts remain soft and hell, but other parts look nice and sharp. All of it looks clean and slick, with okay colors and contrast. Sound quality disappoints though.

PQ: 3/5, AQ: 2/5

[Show spoiler]Finally. A smart and stylish action film comes from the States for a change.

Drive centers on an unnamed man (played by Ryan Gosling) who works as a stunt driver for Hollywood productions by day and a getaway wheelman for hire by night. The Driver is an awkward loner who falls for his neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan) and befriends her little son Benicio (Kaden Leos). Everything goes well until Irene's ex-convict husband, Standard (Oscar Isaac), returns home from prison. One would expect Standard to be jealous over Driver, but he isn't. It turns out he just happens to have had the unfortunate fate of being associated with the wrong kind of people, much like Driver himself. Upon learning that the lives of Irene and Benicio are in danger, Driver offers to help Standard pull a dangerous heist to pay off his debt and keep his family safe. But, as the tagline says, "there are no clean getaways," and some really serious shit start to hit the fan.

Refn's direction is solid and well-deserving of accolades. Quiet and taut with sparse dialogue interspersed with sudden bursts of violence, Refn's Drive is a meditative slow-burner and a uniquely mesmerizing experience. It's both glorious and graceful, establishing a pitch-perfect vibe right from the get-go with a suspenseful getaway around Downtown Los Angeles. There are a couple of scenes that are just mind-blowingly fantastic from the build-up to the payoff which I'm pretty sure will elicit some loud gasps and cheers from the audience. In fact, nearly every scene in this film is executed exceptionally, it couldn't have been done any better.

While the individual performances aren't exactly award-worthy, there's no denying that Drive possesses one of the most incredible ensembles in recent memory, with every actor up to the task, putting their very best into their respective roles. Gosling pulls off the lead character quite well as the loner with a repressed dark side. Mulligan once again proves she is among the best criers in the business with an understated sincerity that just crushes your heart. Cranston and Isaac are no slouches either, as each turn in memorable supporting performances. But it's the deliciously menacing duo of Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman that steals the show. Brooks' Bernie Rose is one dangerous man. He may not exactly like what he is doing, but he is unpredictable and he is brutal. You wouldn't want to mess with the guy let alone go anywhere near him. Perlman's Nino is also despicable, delivering some of the film's best lines to perfection. In the movie, Rose calls his partner "a belligerent a**hole." One just wishes to have seen that man on-screen as Nino comes off as all talk and no action in the end.

Newton Thomas Sigel's (The Usual Suspects, Three Kings) cinematography is hypnotic and the lighting is exceptional. It only made me realize that most filmmakers nowadays don't really put as much emphasis and effort on their lighting as they used to, and so seeing such a beautiful looking film is a welcome treat for the eyes. The blaring 80s synth-pop soundtrack is fantastic, setting the mood perfectly throughout the film. The sound is equally as loud and great, with everything from revving engines to blasting gunshots all amplified up to eleven.

Drive plays like a throwback to the action flicks from the 70s and 80s with the stylistic flair of European thrillers and the excessive violence of South Korean revenge films. The outcome is a potent blend of action and art-house; An odd pairing and a rare feat in itself. And, sadly, I think that will also be its undoing, because if the reception at the screening I attended was any indication, this will more likely be a cult classic rather than a box-office success. Nevertheless, Drive is a unique and delightfully artistic caper that shouldn't be missed.

See if you can spot the trend between the three..

Next greatest rental: “Caligula” Unrated.

[Show spoiler]At first glance, this appears to be a historical epic with an all-star cast and a quality production value, but do not be fooled.

But it has Helen Mirren in it?

She played Caesonia. Apparently. I didn't really recognize her.

Yeah, when he
[Show spoiler]confesses everything to her and her friend later on, they can't help but not believe him because that's not something that can be made up.

I also can't help but love the line during
[Show spoiler]the scene when they were all hanging out outside with his parents, his ex, and his girlfriend. "Underwear would be fine if I were wearing any."

There's probably not a heterosexual male viewer out there who didn't love that line

Saturday Movie #3: Thor...for the second time this week.

Previously reviewed (it's long...so I won't quote it )

This movie has proved to have immense replay value for me; more than I expected even.
Rarely do I find a movie I can watch twice in a short window of time...even more rare is one I could start over as soon as it finishes.

Default The Descendants

My final film-viewing day at TIFF, and I saw The Descendants, featuring George Clooney as a Hawaii land-owner (technically the trustee of an estate), who must confront a family crisis.

[Show spoiler]

As I'm sure you've read, Clooney gives a very good performance. There is a great deal of humour in the film, especially as he tries to relate to his two daughters. The script is good, and while it occasionally veers to the realm of the absurd, it frequently offers a very real portrayal of the modern family. Very satisfying.
