The Lion King - 1994
Wow. I haven't seen this movie since it was in theaters 17 years ago. First of all, this movie looks gorgeous, and sounds great. Within the first minute, I was already feeling the emotional impact of this story. This story is a powerful one, and told very well. This has got be the best Disney movie ever made. The characters, the settings, the story, the music (but not a fan of the "sing-a-long" songs), and the overall emotional feeling one gets when watching The Lion King is absolutely top shelf. The only thing I wish was different about The Lion King is the length. I could have easily watched another 10-15 minutes of this film, but I understand that it's a Disney film, and that all their animation movies are held at the hour and a half mark or less. This is a movie for all ages, and is a perfect movie to show younger kids who haven't seen The Lion King yet. The Lion King is an instant classic and will go down as one of the best movies (at least one of the best Disney movies) of all time. ![]() ![]() ![]() watched two of my absolute favorites today: (500) Days of Summer and Michael Clayton (500) because of its incredible ability to be written like real life and based in real life and feel like we're watching actual moments in a relationship that could be ripped from anyone's life. add in a great soundtrack, and two terrific leads and it's hard to not have a smile on your face while this plays. one of my best blind buy decisions. Michael Clayton because well... hard to describe why but i just absolutely love this movie. it's slow moving and contains no action (but a car explosion!) and is big on dialogue and a "hush-hush" cover up story. all the performances are masterful, especially Wilkinson! i also love the dark color palette, the under-appreciated score (haunting) and the atmosphere / mood of the film. somber, dark, ominous and smothering in a very weird way that works about a film centered around a big corporation covering up dangers to consumers. many find it boring, i find it incredibly riveting. i've seen both movies well over 30 times and both are cemented in their status as two of my absolute favorites and well deserved 5/5's ![]() 5/5 | 5/5 |

Next greatest rental: “Diary of the Dead.”
Do not confuse this with Dairy of the Dead, as I do not believe such a film exists. It is a bummer, because it would be very amusing to see what dairy products have to do with zombies. Would it be a film about zombies consuming milk and ice cream instead of brains? Or would it be a movie about zombie cows producing putrid milk? ![]() But, I digress. As far as “Diary of the Dead” goes, it’s pretty much more of the same: the dead start rising for no apparent reason, survivors shoot a bunch of them, run some over, fight and argue among themselves and act like either morons or jerks (or both), before running across armed looters, blah blah blah. The key gimmick here is that the entire movie is done from the perspective of a handheld camera that one of the dudes is carrying. Fortunately, this is nowhere near as erratic and nerve-wracking as other movies of this type (“Blair Witch Project,” “Cloverfield,” etc). There is enough blood and guts to satisfy fans, and the movie’s pacing is okay. The story has its moments, but ultimately lacks in substance or originality. It has just about every element you see in other zombie pictures (heck, play a video game like “Dead Island,” and you see it all ![]() For a movie that uses extensive hand-held camerawork, it generally doesn’t look bad. The photography can be a little gimmicky, but is rarely shaky. Editing is interesting. Acting is okay for the intended effect, and the writing is okay at best. Production value shows okay sets, props, costumes, and make-up effects. Music is…wait, did this movie even have music? ![]() 3/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 3/5, film: 3/5) Recommendation: Probably not. Next greatest movie seen on the TV: “The Stranger With My Face.” Bah, looks like more made-for-TV slop. Right away, it seemed overly-dramatic, easily-laughable, and cheap. But for whatever reason, we were sucked in by its low-quality charm and a promise of something creepy. The film is ultimately not that creepy or suspenseful of a thriller. If anything, it’s quite predictable. ![]() It is an interesting enough story with characters who are developed well enough to relate to them. The concept of it remains fairly strong, and shows moments of brilliance. But, the main character acts like such a ditz at times, and given the predictability of the story, it comes off as a little too stupid at times. The film shows okay photography and editing, but nothing extraordinary. Acting struck me as a little over-dramatic at first, but I seemed okay with it as it went on. I found the main actress quite attractive. ![]() 3/5 (entertainment: 3.5/5, story: 3/5, film: 2.5/5) Recommendation: Probably not. Go watch the "Double Life of Veronique" instead. |

It's been out on VOD, so you might want to check out your TV listings. But, I'll be seeing this again at the theaters because it's one of those films that you gotta see on the big screen.

Next greatest blind-buy: “Buried.”
Uh huh, I bought a movie about a guy stuck in a box… ![]() ![]() There’s something freaky about being buried alive. The claustrophobia, the limited air supply, the darkness, all leading up to an inevitable demise that might never be discovered above-ground. This film takes the premise (which was already explored rather well in a certain CSI episode ![]() The story is partly to thank for keeping things lively. It takes a simple premise of a man finding himself buried alive, and layers on one thing after another so that a solid story can be built. The story (and the camera) never actually leaves the coffin at any point, but you can get a good sense of what’s going on outside with the phone conversations and the character’s dialogue. The character is pretty real, and it’s easy to relate to him. I wonder if the film is meant to convey some sort of political message (…probably ![]() The movie is well-made. Even though it’s production value only boils down to a guy in a box with a phone and lots of dirt, the photography and editing make it look special, the acting and writing are swell, and as far as the production value goes, it is a slick-looking box, and they got a decent phone for the guy ![]() Yep, this is one of those movies that’s simple in concept but complex in execution, and generally reminds me of something from Hitchcock. 4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4.5/5) Recommendation: Sure, why not? Foggy mentioned that this British Blu-Ray doesn’t have the right OAR, so I have no clue if anything’s being cut from the screen. As it is, the film looks and sounds great. PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4/5 As a nice little bonus, this HMV-exclusive disc also came with another great blind-buy: “The Contestant.” While “Buried” offers a decent emotional experience, Rodrigo Cortes’ debut film engages the other side of the brain. “The Contestant” is short, but jam-packed with loads of style, and loads of insane exposition that analyzes the core concept to the extreme, and then extrapolates certain truths about human commerce and society. It goes on to portray modern society in a critical light, and infers a conspiracy theory that seems interesting (I have no idea if it really holds water though; a proper economist might know), and gives the film a lot of manic paranoid energy. This movie is like the bastard child between “Amelie” and “Pi.” The story intrigues me; it is inherently ironic to see a game show winner have to give up everything he owns to taxes and debt (and in today’s debt-ridden world, it’s quite relevant). As it goes on, it digs up plenty of interesting factoids and point-of-views. There are moments where I feel this film could be used in a class for either math or economics 101. But it’s not dry at all; the story is structured in a solid fashion, and the characters are very lively and decently-developed. It has a certain invoking power of its own, but it probably won’t resonate as strongly as “Buried” does. The film is very slick, with awesome photography and some very wild editing. The running narrative keeps things alive and kicking. Acting and writing are great. Production design shows some weaknesses, but still shows some great sets, props, costumes, and special effects. Music is way cool. This may seem blasphemous, but I enjoyed “The Contestant” better than “Buried.” 4.5/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 4/5, film: 4.5/5) Recommendation: Yes. The disc containing both movies is region-locked. ![]() Between these two films, I think Rodrigo Cortes will be a name to look out for. ![]() |
