Knowing

PQ 10/10
AQ 10/10

Outstanding movie.
The plane and subway crash scenes are demo quality and are so startlingly jaw dropping realistic!

I have seen those two movies on DVD and would rather get through some movies before I commit to three seasons of a TV show.

Oh. When you said "unwatched" I assumed that meant unseen.

Trim the list to unseen and I'll give a rec.

Mad Men is darn good though.

Nah, the Bruce Willis/Malkovich thing.

I have seen Three Colors several times, but not on Blu-ray yet.

I guess I'll skip over The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest since you'd have to watch two movies you've already watched. I can recommend Horrible Bosses, Red, and Something Wild though. I own Horrible Bosses and Something Wild and liked both of them. I have seen Red too and would own it if the Special Edition would ever go on sale.

Unfortunately I barely get the time these days to even poke my head in here, much less write any reviews...besides, I'll need to start watching more than just kids movies with my daughter...unless you want a review of The Smurfs .

I hope to get back to serious movie watching at some point. I already have my food picked out for The Tree Of Life .

Melancholia

Film: 4.5/5
-visual powerhouse, like Antichrist
-I haven't read any reviews or interpretations, but the themes seemed metaphorical/allegorical to me, where
[Show spoiler]the planet Melancholia
symbolizes death, and
[Show spoiler]Earth
symbolizes the individual (whichever character). Thus, sister A who wanted
[Show spoiler]Melacholia to hit earth
seemed to be more
[Show spoiler]suicidal
, while sister B who didn't want
[Show spoiler]Melancholia to hit earth
seemed to be
[Show spoiler]in fear of death
. Neither is ideal. Ideal is sister C (who wasn't in the film), who would
[Show spoiler]just acknowledge Melacholia is there, not want it to hit or go away, but just accept its there and that its going to do whatever its going to do

i could be way off but who gives a &%*#$

I see there was a recent Harry Potter ranking, and many of you baffoons didnt' get it right:

(1) Sorcerer's Stone
(2) Chamber of Secrets
(3) Prisoner of Asskabaaaam (Emeril's favorite)
(4) Return of the Phoenix
(5) Half Blood Prince
(6) Goblet Fire

Haven't seen the last 2 yet

Part 1 is the best because:
(a) We get introduced to Hogwarts, the characters, and HP World
(b) Harry is happy and has that child glow to him - unlike the other films where he looks like he just woke up on Sunday morning in a Vegas brothel
(c) Wizard chess kicks a$$!!

Yep, this that Prequel one. And as much as I really don't want to like it, since near abouts everyone else hates it, it's decent

I don't know why it bugs me every time I say it, but it being decent, takes every single fiber of my being so admit it. I know every single flaw with this film.
  • Characters arn't as good
  • There isn't any mystery
  • It relies on too many jump scares
  • The actual thing is really stupid in the film
  • CGI is really bad (and it looks like they only had one model since almost all the time you see it, it changes into the same thing)
  • No thermite charges
  • [Show spoiler]The alien tries to fly the spaceship, and almost succeeds
  • It's note for note the original film for the most part
  • It misses opportunities (language barrier, cultural divide)
  • The ambiguous ending is very lame
  • The tie in to the original film ending feels like an after thought (this one pissed me off, every one says it ties into the original really well, although it's placed over the credits, like they forgot to film it until everything else on the film was finished)

Basically for the most part it's an uninspired re-run of the first film with norwegians and what not, it really falls apart during the final 30 mins, which is where most the plotholes occur. I think the writer of the film ONLY watched the scene in the norwegian camp from the original and wrote the script from that, since most that stuff is note for note perfect, but it misses out on almost every other important piece of information given out during the rest of the film.

So why is it decent?

I really don't know, I wasn't bored by the film, I found it entertaining enough to keep me satisfied and if this was a standalone film, I'd be more for it, it's just a pale imitation of the original, but for some unknown reason that I want to seek out of my own head and destroy, that was just good enough for me. It might just be with the amount of hatred around it

I would give it a 6/10, but I know it would easily go down on repeated viewing, so I'll pull it down now.

5/10
Did you spot the mimbo with the beard? I would have given it 6/10 purely because of the epicness of the end.Other than that I agree with you.Such uninspired drivel thagt was to me a remake despite the ending.

Those food reviews were brilliant, and were the inspiration for the music thingy.

Killer's Kiss (I loved it)
Le Cercle Rouge (pretty slow-going, but I remember liking it in general)
Miller's Crossing (I remember it was pretty good)
Red (fun)
Scarface (the 80s version? Probably my favorite gangsta movie eva!)
Videodrome (strange and gnarly; I thought it was okay)
My thoughts are above.

Yes, bring it on!!! Martin Liebman thought the "Smurfs" was great.

Can't wait to see what you think (or eat) of "Tree of Life."

There were things I liked about #1, but at the time I felt it was too kiddy-like. I enjoyed #2 the best (still kiddyish, but with bigger effects and stuff). But all of them are pending a re-watch.

Re-watched the last film not too long ago, and my feelings about it remain the same. It's a decent-enough finale. Go watch it.

Good Night and Good Luck

Here's a story about how CBS decided to question McCarthy in the 50s. Directed by George Clooney and shot in black and white, it does a good job of portraying the fear and suspicion of the era.

The cast is excellent. Clooney takes a back seat and it is David Strathairn who steals the show. He was nominated for this performance. I was particularly impressed by his performance in My Blueberry Nights. Others appearing include Patricia Clarkson, Frank Langella and Robert Downey Jr..

The film includes a lot of dialogue and you'll need to pay close attention to get the most from it. It's a political drama set in a newsroom. An ambitious attempt which partly succeeds, but not completely gripping for the 93-minute duration.

Overall 3.5/5
