If you want an extremely detailed list of everything that is different about the Extended Cut, here you go...

I loved the movie in the theater, but I liked all of the changes in the Extended Cut, especially the scene near the end with Baby Doll and the High Roller that should have been left in all along.

Toys.”

Ten, twenty, a hundred years ago, children used to get their thrills from simple pleasures. There were no iPods, video games, cellphones, or (*gasp*) Blu-Ray movies. Nope, there is a certain sentimentality (and perhaps nostalgia) in something as simple as a top, a set of jacks, a jumprope, a ball, a doll, an action figure, or any number of other low-tech objects. The lost art of toymaking (especially in the wake of potentially-corruptive technological advancement) is the central theme to this film.

With a theme like this, the movie overall is as lighthearted, whimsical, and imaginative as the very toys that are showcased. The film has a good amount of comedy that’s clever, witty, and whimsical all at once. It has a lot of cool optical illusion effects that could put “Inception” to shame. But even if all this fluffy stuff doesn’t grab you, the final act does contain one cool battle scene between a regiment of war toys and a militia of old-fashioned toys. It may seem non-menacing and dumb to watch a bunch of tiny toys blowing each other up, but the camerawork and pyrotechnics work really well to make it seem big and epic. And with the battling toys and a fake cityscape, it comes off as a type of cinematic playtime.

The story for this is quite sound. It may not be terribly big on conflict, but it does have a cast of fun characters, and the story’s very well-paced. It does a terrific job of bringing up the potential dangers of bringing kids up on seemingly-violent forms of entertainment. My only big complaint is that it ends rather abruptly.

This film has solid photography and editing. Acting is great; I love Robin Williams, Joan Cusack, Robin Wright, and LL Cool J in their parts. Writing is pretty decent. This production features lots of imaginative sets, props, costumes, and special effects. Music is really funky.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4/5)

Recommendation: I recommend it, but...

Of course, now I see it only has a 4.5/10 on imdb. Never realized it was so critically panned. Therefore...

Recommendation: As a rental.

This movie upscaled quite well on DVD; I would still hope for a Blu-Ray release.

If this was a song, it would be
[Show spoiler]some nice, lighthearted pop music. This song might be better suited for a romcom or something, but I think its overall tone could match with the film.

You're welcome.

I didn't even realize there were so many changes/additions until after I went to that site.

In the Electric Mist (In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead)

2008 R 102 minutes

Netflix synopsis:

Detective Dave Robicheaux (Tommy Lee Jones) finds himself swimming in a murky sea of corruption, deception and lies when he probes the connection between a rash of murders and a notorious New Orleans mobster (John Goodman) -- and discovers secrets that were better left untold. With Robicheaux's family, and his life, in serious danger, can he stem the rising tide of blood and bring justice back to the bayou?

That sounds 1,000% more exiting than it really is. Felt like a made for TV movie, and a disjointed one at that. Little to no suspense, a lot of weak acting (except for Jones of course; even Goodman was crappy) and a goofy story told in a goofy way.

Film 2.5/5
PQ 3/5 Looked like a GOOD upscaled DVD. Weird
AQ 4/5 Clear and well prioritized dialogue and cracking gunshots.

Skip it unless you are a Jones fan and must see all his work.

Ninja Turtles 1-4
Still love these movies as much as I did when I was a kid. 1-2 and 4 are all awesome, 3 is just solid but not that bad. Recommended for turtles fans of all ages, really the only knock is the horrible pizza box packaging.

Next greatest blind-buy: "Super 8."

Although JJ Abrams (the dude who gifted us all with "MI:III" and "Star Trek") directed this project, it has signature Spielberg elements all over it. I think just about every Spielberg thing came to mind while watching this; the most obvious parallels being "ET" and "The Goonies." This throwback (along with the much-hated lens flares ) seems to have been off-putting for a few, but is otherwise quite a hit with most folks I know.

To be sure, the action and special effects do not disappoint. There could probably be more, but the train wreck scene is freaking wicked! But much like the older adventure movies of the 80s, this film seems far more interesting in the character dynamics, the comedy, and setting up interesting scenes and dialogue rather than merely blowing stuff up. But the occasion 'splosion doesn't hurt either.

What really matters, though, is the story. And much unlike a lot of the other modern alien invasion movies, this movie's story is quite sound. Conflict is quite evident and steady, keeping the pacing even. It shows phenomenal build-up as the characters investigate and discover the strange occurrences in their town. As they go along, the characters receive fairly rich development, and it's hard not to like the whole lot of them. In the midst of it all, the film also manages to capture the childlike delight of film-making itself.

This film looks really slick. It does have some lens flares, but not nearly as many as "Star Trek" (if anything, I think the number of flares in "Super 8" generally match up with the average John Carpenter movie, like "The Thing"). The photography is also nowhere near as jittery as Abrams' previous work; it's actually very stylish and solid throughout. Editing can be rather fast, but not overbearingly so. There are a few gimmicky camera moves/angles meant to cover up the alien creature and provide sudden bursts of action (effects that may annoy some). Acting and writing all seem spot-on. This production has excellent sets, props, costumes, and special effects. Music is alright.

4/5 (entertainment: 4/5, story: 4/5, film: 4.5/5)

Recommendation: Sure, why not?

This Blu-Ray looks and sounds darn near perfect!

PQ: 5/5, AQ: 5/5

If this was a song, it'd be
[Show spoiler]a stylish and hip modern take on classic rock n' roll!

So is Captn' Crunch for the "Electric Mist" movie, or for the Turtles movies, or all of the above. Or is it just there?

Hmm, might have to buy and devour some Captain Crunch...

Super 8 - 2011

Wow. I haven't enjoyed a film like this for a while. First of all, I'm a fan of J.J. Abram's work... specifically LOST. (all-time favorite show)

This movie had all the elements of great movie making: great acting, great script, great pacing, excellent character development, top-notch movie-music, heartfelt drama, shocking scary moments, funny moments, a cast with great chemistry, and an overall sense of movie magic.

I do have 3 gripes though. They're not big, but would have made the movie even better, in my opinion. These would be the god awful lens flares, the movie being a little too short (this one might just be me though), and the slightttttly underdeveloped relationship between Joe and Alice.

I'll explain each. I can't stand lens flares and think they are more annoying than productive to the movie itself. J.J. and Steven could have done without it, but luckily it wasn't too overdone. Worst case of lens flares? Star Trek. I almost threw up from being blinded 200,000 times in that crapfest. (but that's a whole other subject.) Next gripe was how short the movie was. At an hour and forty three minutes, I felt like it was due another fifteen minutes or so. They could have spent a little more time on the kids and their friendships, or the relationship between Joe and his dad. Something along those lines. My third gripe was that I wanted to see a little more screen time between Joe and Alice, as they had definite chemistry between each other. As the movie went on, you could see something building between them, and it would have been nice to dwell on that a little more. Like I said, they aren't big gripes, but I would have enjoyed the movie even more if these few things were implemented.

Honestly though, I really enjoyed Super 8. Everything about it was top notch. Even the clothes, cars, and set pieces were fantastically done. Everything felt, genuine. It really felt like 1979.

Oh, and I can't forget about the PQ and AQ. Holy bejeezus. This could be one of the best looking blu-ray's i've ever watched. Just gorgeous. And then there's the audio. Can you say EAR CANDY?! I would put Super 8 on par with Terminator: Salvation. And that's saying a lot. The train crash scene and other various scenes were top shelf. Even the dialogue and everything in between was fantastically clear and spot on. This movie will give your surround a workout.

PQ - 5/5
AQ - 5/5

5/5

I'll be buying this movie very soon on blu-ray.

Good review. Can't say I was any bit annoyed by the lens flares or disappointed in the character relationships, but I did feel that the movie ended rather abruptly.

[Show spoiler]Although JJ Abrams (the dude who gifted us all with "MI:III" and "Star Trek") directed this project, it has signature Spielberg elements all over it.

This gorgeous UK steelbook is region-free!

[Show spoiler]Wow.

PQ - 5/5
AQ - 5/5

5/5

[Show spoiler]I'll be buying this movie very soon on blu-ray.
Super 8 is easily my favorite movie of the year. Love it. I've watched it twice already and it's still great in my book.

And OMG... That steelbook, I want. Is it limited?

Still love these movies as much as I did when I was a kid. 1-2 and 4 are all awesome, 3 is just solid but not that bad. Recommended for turtles fans of all ages, really the only knock is the horrible pizza box packaging.
Mmmm... Cap'n Crunch...

It's an HMV exclusive, and it still appears to be available. Not sure what their shipping policy is, but I think they can ship to the US.

sorry if this was posted in all the Super 8 reviews (i don't read anymore ) but anyone else like to think that Super 8 is a "prequel" of sorts to
[Show spoiler] Cloverfield
? i like to think that the "monster" from Super 8
[Show spoiler]is the same one that comes back in Cloverfield (at the end when they show the video and you see something fall in the ocean) or at least a "relative" of that alien

i also like to think the "monster" from Super 8 is a relative (somehow) to the DON'T CLICK SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ALL OF LOST!
[Show spoiler]smoke monster from LOST. sounds quite similar at times

From what I remember,
[Show spoiler]the thing that falls into the ocean is a satellite that awakens the creature
, I think it was from a Japanese comic
