A Game of Thrones (1996) A Clash of Kings (1998) A Storm of Swords (2000) A Feast for Crows (2005) A Dance with Dragons (2011) It's already 2013, two years after he published Dance and he has stated that he has approximately 400 manuscript pages complete of an estimated 1,500 pages, nearly half of which are left overs from Dance. I'll eat A Dance with Dragons if he finishes the next one by 2015, and gladly I might add. The series has grown from a trilogy, to four, then six, now seven books. The fact that he only writes at his home and his always expanding convention schedule and the things he is interested in that is not ASOIAF (Dunk and Egg, Wild Cards anyone?), it seems unlikely that he will finish the series before the end of the show, not to mention he is old and fat. I'm personally more concerned that he won't finish the story at all, let alone finish before the series is over. |

OK, I havent read back to see if this came up but Im wondering if there has been a bit of a reverse spoiler here. Part of the book discussions always come around to Jeyne Westerling. Is she pregnant and did she somehow escape Riverrun with her younger sister filling in for her? As Jeyne wasnt in the show and Talisa definitely is dead, is this an indicator that Jeyne Westerling is just a red herring and her character has run her course in the books as well?

His writing difficulties (the five year jump) should have only impacted AFFC. The afterward in Feast he implied that Dance would follow the next year or he hoped it would. Clearly it didn't, in fact that was the longest gap we have had. Here is his convention schedule for the rest of the year. July 18-21, 2013 Comic Con International, San Diego, CA, USA August 23-25, 2013 Bubonicon 45, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2013 Lone Star Con 3, San Antonio, TX, USA October 18-20, 2013 Guest of Honor at CapClave, Washington, D.C. Nov. 9-10, 2013 Featured Guest at Supanova Festival, Brisbane, Australia Nov. 16-17, 2013 Featured Guest at Supanova Festival, Adelaide, Australia A lot of trips that he won't be writing ASOIAF. Throw in the other stuff he's committed to, new Wild Cards book, another Dunk and Egg story, Game of Thrones script, his editing gigs... oh and his love of football that always slows him down, yeah I often wonder if this series will ever get finished. After all he will be 64 years old in September. And to really crush my dreams he has stated before that he doesn't have any detailed notes for the series and instead "keeps it in his head". That's a real quote. No notes, it's in his head. ![]() I used to think that he was called by TIME Magazine (or whoever it was) "The American Tolkien" because of the depth and magic of his storytelling abilities. Now I think it is because he only manages to publish every twenty years or so. At least it seems like it. ![]() |

OK Read the whole thread.
Time frame- I see no way the show airs the conclusion before Martin publishes the book ... that's where he makes his money. What is possible is the show could run thru book six and then the conclusion could be revealed in a series of movies. Next season should be great! After that things get dicey. The fourth and fifth books r an exercise in treading water. Tons of new characters slowly advancing the plot. Personally I think there is a ton of stuff they can cut completely or condense to make it manageable. Hopefully book six is about building to a crescendo. That's the way the series read for me. Book one as the setup, book two stirred the pot and book three paid it off. Four is almost a restart. If u consider four and five one book, it's like the first book in a second trilogy. I dont care about Lady Stoneheart. I personally think it was an awful idea and was mostly a bridge to Jon Snow. Flashbacks. One of things I did enjoy r historical flashbacks as retold to POV characters. Things like Promise me Ned, the Harenhal tourney and the battle of the Trident. Hopefully they start including these things as they have been very lax so far. After the third book most of my enjoyment has been from the mysteries of the series rather than the plodding story. |

Yeah, they really should have had some sort of plan when they started this show. Either Martin could commit to finishing the book in time or start the series later. But they obviously begun the series without considering that the books might not be finished in time. Not good. I guess worse comes to worse, they can end the series at the latest book and then finish off with a movie when the last book is finished.

I don't see the problem, D&D know where the story is going and (presumably) how it ends. Even if GRRM takes forever to release the last two books, they still have outlines to work from and can get more info from him as they go. For example, just before season 3 they met with GRRM to go over things:

Personally, I'm on board with them continuing on with the show past Martin's progress. I know that's not the ideal scenario for any of us, and most certainly not one Martin would be happy with. But he's had eons to pick up the pace, and I don't want the series held up. Who knows if he'll even finish, honestly. At least this way, we're sure to get an ending to this story, one way or another.

LOL, I had a dream last night that the premiere episode of Season 4 was all the GoT actors spoofing HBO's other shows. I don't remember specifics, but Peter Dinklage was Nucky Thompson.
![]() Looking forward to S4 news. Can't wait till we find out who plays the Red Viper! ![]() I'm also looking forward to seeing how they handle Lady Stoneheart. I agree with those who say we'll probably hear about the Frey's getting knocked off throughout the season, and then they're reveal her ala ASOS epilogue. ![]() Last edited by Aragorn the Elfstone; 06-17-2013 at 03:02 AM. |

Book 5 Spoiler alert: Actually, a scene I'm looking forward to from "Dance" is Barristan's fight with Hizdahr's bodyguard (Chapter: The Kingbreaker). It's when you finally see Barristan kick some real ass. |
