Kudos to anyone who puts themselves out there artistically, and that goes for the posters on this thread presenting alternate artwork as well.

I really like how you can get a pretty good impression of the movies from this minimalist poster set

Not my cover, it came up in a random google image search. Still, though...much better art than what Criterion's doing.

The one constant in my ranking would be Before Midnight at 3rd and I still really enjoyed it, but those first two are amazing films.

Honestly, I think part of the reason that Midnight is always at the bottom of preference lists is the same reason you'd rank the feeling of love at those stages. What is the most enjoyable? First contact, reconnecting, or settling in? The first two are invariably going to be the most exciting / provocative, while the latter is, by nature, going to be more strained and humdrum. But this is, I think, actually the *strength* of the three films taken together. About the one thing that *does* bother me in Midnight is the dinner table scene. Not the entire scene, but I just find some of the talking pretentious, even for Linklater. And I just don't find the story about men in accidents worrying about their c*cks before their families all that funny - certainly not funny enough to carry multiple viewings when you know the punchline. I barely chuckled the first time. It seems that everyone at that table is obsessed with sex, which is just...odd, and pretty out of place with the rest of the series IMHO. During that scene, I always find myself thinking "man, this is *not* how I talk with my friends (I'm 38). It feels staged. And that's the LAST thing I'd ever say about the other two films - or the REST of Midnight, for that matter. |
