Okay... Anyhow, I was just implying that pretty much anyone can play that 8K content that the user to whom I was responding said no one can play. As for myself, my internet speed is 200Mb/s down and 35Mb/s up; I 've got Optimum Online and pay $93.00 per month. I'm pretty sure you consider that a ripoff, LOL.

Default ARM prepares with SoC for 8K broadcasting

https://advanced-television.com/2018...-broadcasting/
Quote:
ARM says: “As the world moves towards UHD 8K content, we’re ensuring our IP will support encoding and decoding for content on smartphones and other devices. The Mali-V76 supports 8K decode up to 60fps or four 4K streams at 60fps giving consumers the opportunity to stream four movies, record video while video conferencing, or watch four games in 4K. And at lower resolutions, and still at full HD, Mali-G76 will support up to 16 streams of content, creating a 4×4 video wall, a very popular use case in the Chinese market.”

Wink Samsung Announces Two New Ranges Of 8K TVs - And Discusses Future 8K TV Tech

https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarc.../#6327b3f67caa
Quote:
This debut 8K range will be available in 65, 75 and 82-inch sizes, with a massive 98-inch model set to follow in 2019. Samsung also revealed that these 8K TVs are going to be 120Hz models.
Quote:
[UPDATE: Samsung has been in touch to say since this story was first published that it can no longer confirm that the exact screen sizes and refresh rates quoted in its presentation will be correct when the TVs are formally launched.]
Kind of reminds one of HDR10+ roll out…..

Default 8K OLED Two Years Behind 8K LCD, Claims Analyst

https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarc.../#6d0e62f97680
Quote:
During a presentation provided to the Quantum Dot And Advanced Display Technologies Summit in Los Angeles this week, O’Brien stated that OLED manufacturing capacity for big screens - 65 and 75 inches - is lagging substantially behind the LCD manufacturing capacity for such large screens. And since the introduction of 8K is going to be focused around these larger screen sizes, LCD thus has a substantial head start in bringing 8K TVs - especially remotely affordable 8K TVs - to market.
Quote:
In fact, during the presentation of O’Brien’s analysis, it was suggested that OLED is as much as two years behind LCD in producing real-world 8K TVs. And that even when the first 8K OLED TVs appear, 8K OLED production capacity will be far behind that of 8K LCD.
Quote:
He doesn’t speculate on how much an 8K OLED might cost, but his presentation did contain a graphic showing that by 2021, the cost of producing 65-inch and 75-inch ‘BottomEmission’ (!) 4K OLED panels in Korea (using the inkjet system O’Brien believes will be in use by then) would be around $600 and $875 respectively. Producing 65-inch and 75-inch 8K LCD panels, on the other hand, would cost around $425 and $725 respectively.
Quote:
O’Brien addressed 8K uptake in his presentation too, though, predicting that by as soon as 2020, 8K penetration of the TV market will hit 10% of 75-inch TVs and 5% of 65-inch TVs, with these figures rising to around 40% and 25% by 2022, and 100% and 75% by 2025.

I do, but those are just snap shot speed tests without real world connotations. It's only as fast as the slowest link in the network chain (or web) at any given moment as well as traffic flow.

I have over 200 Mbps and streaming sites still get throttled with resolution fluctuations at peak times.

I now have an internet download speed of 200 Mb/s and stream 4K content without any issue. The same was the case when I had a speed of 100 Mb/s.

Salty, here’s a contribution for your 8K thread….https://www.displaydaily.com/article...right-on-track

Have to say, I got a kick out of the comment below where the poster Rodolfo says “Meanwhile all 20/20 vision excuse naysayers will again pop their expert Internet blogs, written on their laptops from their kitchen tables while still wearing their pajamas….”  which made me wonder if the expert internet bloggers (e.g. https://www.cnet.com/news/why-4k-tvs-are-stupid/) really are typing away from their kitchen tables while in their pajamas, and if so, in Capri style pants?

Default Samsung may launch its first 8K TVs this year, but will the U.S. get them?

https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-t...nching-8k-tvs/
Quote:
Samsung also talked about what the future holds for its TV technology at the L.A. event. In addition to 8K resolution and 120 Hz panels, Samsung is working on what it is calling a “next-gen” high dynamic range (HDR) technology that could feature peak brightness levels of up to 4,000 nits and 12-bit color depth, which is currently only supported by Dolby Vision, a technology that Samsung has not used in its TVs to date.

The company said it is working on technology that will help counter the issues that 8K displays have with brightness, a must in this era of HDR. It is also working on Spatial Division Pixel technology, which uses a new type of subpixel design to improve viewing angles, something that remains an issue with LCD displays. Samsung hasn’t said whether any of these technologies will make it into the first 8K TVs it launches, but considering the way the company spoke about them, it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll see them on the 2018 models.

Default Samsung to use new technology for QLED TVs, says report

https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20180705PD204.html
Quote:
Samsung Electronics will reportedly overhaul the structure of its quantum dot (QD)-based QLED TVs with plans to introduce QDoG (QD on Glass)-based QLED TVs in 2019, according to a Korea-based Digital Daily report.

The overhaul calls for the replacement of quantum dot enhancement film (QDEF) with glass for the production of light guide plates of backlit modules, said the report, adding the new QDoG process will be more cost competitive, while also helping to reduce the thickness of TV products.

The new process will allow Samsung to roll out 8K QLED panels, further enhancing its competitiveness in the high-end TV segment, said the report.

Default 8K at Samsung Advanced Display Summit

https://www.avsforum.com/8k-samsung-...isplay-summit/
Quote:
Does this mean you should upgrade your new 4K display as soon as 8K models appear? No! The initial wave of 8K TVs will be exorbitantly expensive, so unless you’re an obscenely wealthy early adopter, there’s no need to hock the family jewels to get one. Just keep in mind that technology marches ever onward, and 8K will become more and more mainstream in the next five to 10 years. Once that happens, 8K TVs will be more affordable—and it might be time to upgrade your current display.

Question Another quote from ^ above article

Quote:
Abhijeet Solat from Samsung Display pointed out that, aside from increasing the resolution by a factor of four, 8K increases the color gamut from DCI-P3 to BT.2020—or at least closer to BT.2020 than DCI-P3. This is made possible by quantum dots, which emit very narrow-band primary colors. He also claimed that 8K displays will reach a peak brightness of 4000 nits or more with 12-bit color depth, which supports 68 billion colors. In addition, 8K offers greater textural detail and perceptual depth.
4K will offer these same capabilities, correct?

They'll probably leave that off, so you're forced to go 8k for specs that should have occurred with 4k.

And we'll still be upscaling 2k material to 8k... with no physical medium at all.

There is more to it all than this. Obviously 8K is a marketing thing, as are most things nowadays. In reality, 8K will actually look softer to most people than 4K on these screens. More pixels in a space the size of 65-75" produces a smoother image, not a sharper one.

The 2020 color thing is completely bogus. The reason we don't have true full 2020 content now is because of the limitations of the capture and mastering system. Plus there just isn't a lot of naturally occurring colors that fall in that gamut. In reality, most common colors we see in nature fall in 709, with some going farther out. Once you go past P3 you are getting more into stuff like animation or man made colors. There are exceptions for sure, but they are certainly not the norm. But the 4K UHD standard supports out to full 2020, it won't require 8K at all. Getting the technology to actually reproduce full 2020 is taking longer than they probably hoped for, so now they're saying it will be around by the time 8K displays are, so they'll use that as a selling point. That still doesn't mean there will be content that has 2020, and even content that does the amount of material that will be even wider than P3 will be fleeting at best.
