Sony now makes only the UBP-X700U. Panasonic and Sony have both stopped making BD-R and BD-RE discs. Pioneer has stopped making computer disc drives, and I don't even know if Hitachi-LG still makes computer disc drives or if the ones for sale now are just new old stock. I did not want the Blu-ray Disc system to end now!

While I like and will continue to support Blu-rays, the Blu-ray format is at the point where it truly has no reason to exist.

Then it's a war between 4K and DVD. Do people pick quality, or cost? Most likely the latter, as we found out with Beta vs VHS, and with great laserdiscs (and even some great tapes) vs early DVDs. However, if the manufacturers wisely knock down the cost and increase the production of 4K players (which aren't that expensive to manufacture, when you consider these are multibillion-dollar corporations manufacturing thousands plus at a time), and slowly phase out DVD players and Blu-ray+DVD players in lieu of producing 4K+Blu-ray+DVD players, eventually people will say "well, I might as well make the jump". The costs of the discs need to come down too, since very few people will pay $66 for one film, regardless of how much they like it. I can think of maybe ten films total where I'd pay that obscene level of money, and the rest I'd just do without.

If the quantity of 4K players went up, the cost of 4K players and discs went down, and people had a good enough reason to start embracing the massive increase in quality that 4K provides (having upgraded from DVD to 4K several times, it's akin to Dorothy seeing Oz for the first time), then and only then will DVD die.
I don't ever see dvd or blu ray dying. They are cheap and require almost no effort to put out so they are nearly free money. They also have the majority of market share.

The one I see potentially dying off is 4k blu rays. The majority of things made just don't need a 4k releases and wont ever have them. The only reason I haven't bought some releases is because of a potential 4k release or because the 4k release is to expensive. 4k actually hurts sales though idk if they could put Pandora back in the box at this point.

Please don't take offense at this, none is intended, and I know many people watch media primarily on their computer, but I'm genuinely curious; why choose to watch movies on a smaller screen with (presumably) worse sound when you have better available?

If DVD does last past 2026, it'll surpass VHS as the longest running home media format in the United States of all time.

Couple reasons.

1)I'm more relaxed at my desk.

2)I'm usually doing multiple things at once which I can't really do at the couch. If I'm with company, I'll watch at the couch but usually, when I'm by myself, I rather be watching at the computer where it's much easier for me to do more then one thing. That's just a me quirk.

3)This ties into # 1 but I have several eye problems. Conditions relating to issues I was born with(I was born with a bad immune system). It's just easier for me and more pleasant watching on my monitor due to my eye issues which is a nice size for my purposes and why I'm more relaxed at the desk.

Again, if I'm with company, I'll watch at the T.V. but quiet honestly, I'm not really enjoying what I'm watching on the couch. It's more about the company then whatever is being watched.

Like I said,# 2 is more just a unusual me thing. But # 1 and #3 which are tied together are the big things and the # 3 thing has become more of an issue in the last few years even with going to the theater too.

VHS died as the main home video format in the early to mid-2000s, but it's been back for a couple of years now. Many new movies (Terrifier 2, Terrifier 3, Alien: Romulus, Victor Crowley, Late Night with The Devil, etc.) were released on VHS, so VHS is still going.

Outside of a handful of novelty releases aimed at stoking the nostalgia of collectors who’ll likely never actually play them, VHS is most certainly not “back” in any meaningful way. We’re just seeing an uptick in kitschy releases that are mostly being sold as display pieces to place on a shelf.

Home VIDEO media format at least. The first pre-recorded VHS tapes were issued in 1977 (shortly after the first machines and blank tapes went on sale in the US), the very last were in 2006 (same year HD-DVD and Blu-Ray were introduced). 29 years is the record to beat. With TWO higher-def disc formats out now, it seems long past time to retire standard DVD. There were people who stuck with VHS to the bitter end, but somehow they've survived.

I’m all set up for 4k and streaming but still make plenty of use of my local library’s DVDs. They still get new releases all the time and seem popular, especially for old and poor people who’ve held on to the same DVD player for 20 years. DVD is here to stay.

VHS lasted as a format until late 2010/early 2011 in markets other than the US, which is 33 years.

I know people that will get the DVD over streaming, that is a win.
