Tarantino is very overrated. the only 'alright' film I have seen of his was PF. The other ones: RD, KB, JB etc were all very meh...and KB was utter crap.

I personally love Reservoir dogs.To put that into the horrible bin which almost all his latter films are,is doing it a great missjustice.Thought "Jackie Brown" was ok.Miles better than KB,but not in the same league as RD and PF.

My two norwegian kroners anyway

Athough it's not a bad movie at all, I actually think Reservoir Dogs is Tarantino's weakest film. Two words: "sausage fest."

No, i dont think Tarantino is overrated. I would say he is one of the best directors to emerge in the 90's. But thats my opinion, many others dont care for his work. I enjoy his movies because they are a welcome change to the loud souless blockbusters that come out from certain "Hollywood" directors... can you say Michael Bay? Dont get me wrong , i like action flicks just as much as the next red-blooded american. But its nice to watch a movie that contains smart dialogue, very realistic (usually underrated) actors, an interesting story, and yes the occasional gun fight, sword fight, drug deal, crushed eyeball, tortured nazi, & grotesque car crash.
Heres my rating of each. Scale 1-10 ....

Resevoir Dogs 8
Pulp fiction 9
jackie Brown 5
KilL bill 8
death proof 7
Inglorious Bastards 7

I think he is overrated. Not bad, mind you. I like his movies, but they're not the best ever made and I wouldn't put anyone of them in my personal top ten or twenty.
Most of his characters all try a bit too much to be cool, and utter every line in the coolest way possible. That's not realistic at all. His ear for music fits his films very good, though. I have to give him that. The 'Stuck in the Middle With You' scene in Reservoir Dogs is really disturbing because of that.
But I think Paul Thomas Anderson, who also uses different genres and movies as inspiration, and can be called a similar filmmaker is a much better director and writer. He shows more of a progression in each film.

He can't be overrated.

If he were overrated, then slavish packs of slack-jawed fans would go to see everything and anything he puts his name to.

Including Grindhouse which bombed in theaters.

Paul Thomas Anderson may be a better filmmaker but I don't see many similarities between the two. Honestly I don’t see many similarities between Tarantino and other American filmmakers.

thats because it wasnt marketed like his own movies and it isnt a typical Tarantino movie... it was a "grindhouse" movie... thats not exactly going to grab the attention of a mass audience... being released on Easter weekend no less.....

Tarantino was influenced by American filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Monty Hellman, and Sam Fuller, as well as foreign filmmakers John Woo and Jean Luc Godard. I think it's easy to see these influences in his films.

Maybe Grindhouse failed because only the fans went to go see it. Most of his other films had cross-over appeal to more mainstream audiences.

Again, I disagree, it wasn't well marketed by Weinstein, and they seem to not only be dropping the ball on Tarantino movies {like releasing Halloween in mid August instead of October in which you'd make money hand over fist}

I see your point. Originally I was talking about Tarantino films not being similar to other American directors currently making movies. The comparison was originally between Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson. Let's be honest Scorsese must have some sort of influence every American filmmaker after the 1980. Taxi Driver was made before I was born but it's the first movie I remember loving so much and that I wanted to know who made the movie. I'm sure Scorsese influenced Tarantino but I would not call their films similar. IMO.
