Regarding color, unless you've watched all three discs on a properly calibrated display (no, that doesn't mean just borrowing settings, but using a high quality meter and software or have a qualified Pro) you don't know what you don't know. You most certainly cannot look at screencaps, some of them converted no less but still within rec 709, on an uncalibrated PC monitor. The only thing I really use my monitor for looking at caps is looking at grain texture or lack of. I don't put a lot into color with it.

Well, I wasn't arguing that much. Just explaining why the colours on the UHD are not how it actually looks like in the 35mm prints. I've given enough circumstantial evidence to back my claims.
But, it seems I've been reduced to nothing more than a thread-crapper, despite my intention being on the contrary.
Not much support from members here (except a few) despite spending so much time carefully providing all the evidence.

How people want to spend their money is certainly their choice to make, but I don't understand those who are boycotting this. Sure, it may not be everything it could have been or you wanted it to be, but at the end of the day it's still the best home release of the film to date and that counts for something, right?

I mean, if you have any kind of appreciation for JP at all, and you want to watch it from time to time - as we tend to do with the movies we enjoy - then what are you going to do when the urge to revisit it strikes? Watch one of the previous home releases, all of which are inferior to this UHD edition that you're disappointed in for not being reference quality? That seems a bit backwards to me.

^ I have tremendous appreciation for what the original JP is. The image quality and the colours matter to me a lot! I have no interest in paying money to get me a version where the studio did not give a damn about preserving the original cinematography and the colour timing.

If you LOVE something, then you should demand the actual stuff, not salivate for any and every inferior and incorrect version produced to milk your money. I have spend a lot on numerous home video versions of Jurassic Park. If I am going to spend so much money again, it better be reference quality or at least have the same look of the prints. This UHD is neither.

The JP 3D Blu-ray when brightened, is far more accurate to the theatrical colour timing than any of the ugly 2D versions Universal produced till date. I have a backup on my PC and I play it in 2D just fine. It's the best the film has ever looked on home video and in all likelihood, ever will. Because Universal ain't tired of the DVD-era pale pink and blueish grading.

But the UHD is still probably the best way to watch the movie at home, and Universal probably isn't reissuing this with a new transfer anytime soon. People can either enjoy what's available or live with an even inferior product on BD in the hope that something better might come along way down the line. To each their own.

I’m doing this. I got the 4k codes for under $20 so not worth the almost $60 I spent on th steel book. I don’t have a reference system anyhow.

Anyone with reasonable expectation will be satisfied with this release, especially at $50 for all 4 movies. If you are not satisfied or decide not to buy, just move on.

It may be but I would have gladly paid more for this release if new transfers were created and scanned for the older titles in the set. Really I have bought the original title at least 5 times since its original release:
  • CAV Laserdisc
  • Dolby Digital DVD
  • dts DVD with flawed track
  • dts DVD with theatrical mix
  • Original BD set
  • 3DBD

The video quality of the original DVDs was subpar at the time. The BD set used crappy transfers as well. It looks the same for UHD. I mean they know they are going to sell these things since its a well regarded franchise but using elements that are nearly a decade old or possibly older to sell on a new format reeks of nothing more than a cash grab.

People be complaining about the color when that's the best thing about it. Colors are nice and natural no teal and orange. HDR is about brighter deeper and more likelike colors like it says on the stickers that come with a lot of these 4k's. If you want to see the original colors then you should find a film showing near you. There was a showing of a print in Chicago earlier this month maybe you should have went to that instead of moaning on here about the colors being too natural on the 4k. HDR is about getting more color not losing color by adding a tint to it. Only bad thing about this is the DNR Uni should have given it to Sony to put out.

That's fine but they could have done better. It just seems common with these highly desirable titles that they always put the least amount of effort into the releases because they want the enthusiast to purchase it again on the next subpar release with a slight upgrade.

The thing I don't get is why is it so damn hard for Universal to release a proper home video where the colours of the film prints are retained. Whey do they stick to the colder colours of the previous home video versions?
They tried to return back to the 35mm colours for the 3D didn't they? The results weren't proper then. But with HDR they had the chance and ruined it.

Newsflash the 3d colors looked unnatural and HDR is about making colors more lifelike aka not adding unnatural blanket tints to them.

That's exactly how I look at this. The UHD isn't flawless but going back to the old Blu-Ray makes it clear how much better the UHD is. Sure, I would LIKE every title I buy to be flawless, but I can also live with transfers that "mostly have it right" when it's a movie I rewatch consistently. I'm not going to "boycott" a favorite film just because the transfer isn't absolutely flawless. And it's a hell of a lot better than the Blu-Ray, no question.

i think it's fine if people want to pass, personally i would have liked to see colours like the stills that were posted on page 2 of this thread.. the uhd and 3d releases are two extremes away from the print colours but at least the uhd is pleasant to look at.

I don't wanna say too much because I haven't actually watched the JP disc yet, but it sounds like people are again conflating "could have been better" with "bad." I'm not OK with settling for whatever studios are willing to give us, but at the end of the day people have to decide if they can accept a flawed improvement or continue living with something worse.

Do you truly believe they are not going to release a complete 4K UHD collection when Jurassic World 3 comes out? If they do, it will likely be the same price or cheaper by then, and there is a good shot they could do a new scan of JP1. Granted, that is 3 years away, but if you already have the Jurassic Park films on BD thats not that long IMO.

Lets say they do release a new scan on JP1, but the only way to get it is to rebuy the entire "Complete Collection" with JP1-JP3, and JW1-JW3. How would you feel about the current set then?

Its only $50, but Universal could have done things to make it more palatable, such as including empty holders to put JW2/JW3 discs when they come out so you could have a truly complete collection, or have individual cases for each of the films. But I think they will probably prefer to re-sell everyone on the whole collection again in 3 years when it is complete. Including a new scan of JP1 exclusive to a new collection would virtually guarantee everyone to double dip on the whole thing, too.

As it stands, this seems a bit like a half baked incomplete set to cash-in on JW2 coming out this year, with little thought of the collector and future planned JW releases in mind.

I was not boycotting the film itself. I am against the UHD release of that film! I was pointing out why the latest 4K master of the film is not good enough. In fact, it looks almost as bad as the 2D BD to me.

What'd you think of the transfers for the other three movies? Are they good enough to purchase even if the first one's isn't perfect? Genuinely curious cuz you're clearly a big fan (understatement of the year lol).
