Someone over at fandom post had a interesting take. The ADV dub could be an exclusive to the ultimate edition, similar to the Gundam Seed release with rightstuf. Personally I don't care about the dubs, but I definitely want Fly Me to the Moon.

In my opinion, Shinji makes the show difficult to watch and get into, but can be manageable enough to push through, but Asuka flat out kills the series with how badly written and infuriatingly presented her character is. However, glad this franchise is coming back in print for the fans and hopefully it contains all language options so everyone is happy.

Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat. I can live without the original dub, but Fly Me to the Moon has always been a quintessential aspect to Evangelion for me.

And considering that GKIDS probably has the best track record out of most of the anime distributors in the USA just made this an easy choice to make.

And fans would riot, like they did 4 years ago when FUNimation said that the Ocean dub for The Vision of Escaflowne was going to be exclusive to the Collector's Edition. In response to said backlash, FUNimation ended up having the Ocean dub in all the releases.

Locking an old dub behind an expensive premium release is the exception, not the norm. Last I checked, the Streamline dub for Akira is on all of FUNimation's cheap discs, the old dubs Discotek gets a hold of aren't locked behind an expensive release...

No. They buy the more expensive model. Same logic here. Want the ADV dub (if indeed they end up locking it behind a ultimate edition) - then put on your big boy pants and shell out the cash. |

People will pay for it, the ADV and Manga dubs have lots of fans and this is Evangelion we're talking about, but the problem is it results in the dubs being "lost" to history. I'd rather see the ADV and Manga dubs available on each release rather than stuck on the VHS tapes, the DVDs, and an expensive premium release that will sell out, and get scalped. There's also no guarantee the DVDs will stop getting scalped, especially if the old dubs aren't included on the Blu-rays.
Imagine if FUNimation had locked the Ocean dub for The Vision of Escaflowne behind the now long sold out Collector's Edition like they originally planned before fan backlash caused them to change their minds. To get a hold of that dub, you'd either have to shell out the $200-$300 it's going for right now, get the Bandai DVDs that are full of rainbows and look atrocious, or import the UK release which you'll need a region-free player to watch. This stuff should be widely available. It's one reason I got pissed about Sentai erasing Krystal LaPorte in their Beyond the Boundary dub, that old release will now be the only way to hear her performance as Mirai Kuriyama, and the OVA was locked behind the LE which is even harder to get a hold of than the Escaflowne CE. I'm also not a fan of Sentai's upcoming Blu-ray release of Locke the Superman being sub-only. Discotek for their DVD release went through the trouble of saving the dub and getting it on DVD for the very first time, and now you'll have a hard time getting said dub thanks to the limited supply as it's now OOP. There wouldn't be a problem if Sentai worked with Discotek to get that dub on the Blu-ray. Another instance of this problem is the Ocean dub for Dragon Ball Z, the Rock the Dragon set is quite hard to get a hold of now as it's OOP. |

I missed it at first too. I'll be dissecting the differences between Anime LTD's and GKids "Ultimate Editions" in the official thread once details start pouring out.

That would either translate to two situations: - The ultimate being more expensive than necessary (also they would have two distincts authoring, so that's another additional cost) - Taking a percentage on all editions (and this is what they do in fact) to cover the "all distributor costs", even on budget release that would lack the said dub. And that is indeed assy. You can't compare mechanical parts made for different cars with the acquisition of a dub. That is just unconformable. Anime fans should not be comfortable being threated as cash cows. |

As for the whole Kaworu thing, my two cents are that "affection" is a lot less awkward, but leaving the next line as "I like you" is still kind of lame. "Like" isn't an incorrect translation of "suki" in isolation, but in context, in English, it's a weirdly casual expression for Kaworu to use and for Shinji to be so affected by. "Love" is a broad enough term in English to be ambiguous, especially coming from a character like Kaworu -- Khara's subs make me imagine a pastor going on about how "God so liked the world that he gave his only son..." It just isn't as effective. Also, not taking the opportunity to render that line as "In other words, I love you" is just a chump move |
