It had little to do with the sister. In a now widely reported old interview, Simon Liu called China a third world country and said that people there were dying of starvation. That would cause a problem anywhere in the (so called) developed world, but in China that's basically pi**ing in their faces.

I gather that China cares more about the content in the movie itself than it does about what its actors had said outside of the film. Simu could always pull a Cena and have apologized for making incorrect comments, but the daughter/sister ("Shang-she", as the punditry dubbed her) had a message of rebellion against traditionalism, which offends China, baked into the film.

[Show spoiler]Katy's arc in the film seemed pro-China: when she was living in the decadent West, she was a loser who did not know what her place and purpose in life was, but when she returned to Chinese traditionalism in Ta-Lo, she found her place and purpose.

BTW, does English English have a fun colloquialism equivalent to "fruit fly"?

I thought the story beat about Shang-chi effectively abandoning her hints at what her arc could have been with a more nuanced exploration of their relationship. Instead it was turned into more eye-rolling "untrustworthy men" and "girl boss/need no man" tropes. I guess they just can't help themselves.

It seems like they really can't help themselves.

I'm thinking that it might have been better if Shang-she had fought against some female ninja-assassins, and maybe there could have been some sort of equivalent female character to Death Dealer or RazorFist that she could have fought. Besides tussling with some of her dad's mooks, the only full fight that she had in the film was against Shang-Chi, and she lost it. We're told that she's the greatest female martial artist evar, but she doesn't really show it in the film. Maybe she too could have had a fight against Michelle Yeoh? Yeoh didn't get all that much to do in the film.

While the CGI dragon(s) doing the Neverending Story shtick at the end had some interesting 3D, IMO the demon should've been in human form so that Shang Chi could've had a kung fu fight against it in 3D.

Overall just not enough martial arts sequences in the Marvel martial arts movie.

lol the only vibe about the sister that lingers is the boss chick which has been overused to the point of being a cliche. As for Simu Liu trying to pull a John Cena? Cena is a foreigner, who apologized in Mandarin which if you think about it is pretty amazing when you realize that there are thousands of Chinese people who can't speak Mandarin.

Only thousands?

In 2021, around the time of Shang Chi's release, China banned depiction of effeminate men in its media. In February of 2021, China declared it was hiring strong male role models to work in the schools to reverse the feminization of its young men, which had happened in part because its young males were (for some reason) said to have been raised primarily by women. Both of those didn't jibe with Shang-she's gurlbossery tropes, and possibly meant Simu was a no-go from the get-go.

because it is. It has half baked characters, and spiderman always has the tony stark get out of trouble card. Spiderman didnt really have any consequences. Spiderman was always about consequences for his actions. In this one tony will always save him


aren't you being a little to harsh on your thinking? These are comic book movies, they aren't supposed to be masterpiece movies.

they should be entertaining though right? Also part 2 had overly goofy dialogue that no rela person would ever say.

as spider-man here is a kid maybe they were targeting their writting lines to a much more younger audience. And yes, this movie happens after all of the snap and the blip as this is the last phase 3 movie.

Entertaining sequel with modest 3D. Enjoyable

Tonight watched September Storm.

A modest adventure about treasure hunters seeking sunken gold doubloons becomes a visual feast to behold thanks to another outstanding restoration by 3D Archives. Filmed along the Mallorca coast of Spain and Balearic Sea, these vistas aren't just captured but enhanced by excellent depth and many an object protruding beyond the screen. Color saturation is perfect.

Highly recommend.

Just watched "K2 in 3D - The most dangerous mountain in the world."

Not about climbing K2, it is instead a very interesting documentary focusing on the Karakoram Range on the border of China and Pakistan where the second highest mountain in the world is located. Excellent depth with some stunning images. Unfortunately with nothing protruding beyond the screen, dramatic immersion is unfortunately limited. More an observation than a criticism.

Fright Night. Medium. They could have prolonged the embers more. That was a feast every time it happens. I prefer this than the original, story-wise. I think Al Bundy ruined the first one for me. LOL.

Jack The Giant Slayer. Medium-to-Strong. Nice bright movie, strong pop-outs (beans, rocks). Some scenes though were mild but more scenes are with medium and strong layers. I like the story too .

Thanks for suggesting vertical limit. Been a long time since I last saw it.

The 3D simulation was surprisingly good. A nice sense of depth with objects moving closer and further away.. Definitely enhanced the viewing experience. And this was on DVD, not Blu-ray.
