Yeah, but the only non-VFX shot there is this one, and it's significantly better on the UHD in terms of detail, and the still is DNR'd. Colors are much nicer though (if a tad overcooked) and closer to what I wish the UHD had looked like.

As for the VFX, if the images are from ILM it might be like I said regarding the Cinefex images. I think it's very possible the shots just don't exist in a state that good on film.

Pretty much the same as the previous one: better detail, dull grade.

Edit:
Interesting bonus, the previous two UHD caps, but regraded to match the stills.

Finally got my noticed a few hours ago that its been finally shipped. Instead of getting it Friday its been pushed back to Wednesday May 30th .. I was hopping to check it out this weekend, but now I have to wait another week. Is this normal for a late shipment or just because of lack of supply?

Probably not the guy you wanted feedback from but I'm an hour into TLW and I think it looks good but it's not the upgrade that JW is. Then again, I've always thought TLW looked significantly better on previous releases so I was always going to be difficult to please. I will say that heavy grain is noticeable right away during TLW whereas the 'managed' grain of JP is far more subtle. That said, the grain doesn't continue to draw attention to itself the way it does during a Sony release.

I'm also the guy who turned Contrast Enhancer on high for JP and I've turned it back to my standard low for TLW. The following three photos show a rough approximation of what happens when you keep turning that setting up on my MU8000 and you can see in the final photo that detail is obliterated in the window on the high setting (ignore what the menu says).

[Show spoiler]

Finally, and this is childish, but I had somehow never noticed that Goldblum pulls an Al Bundy shortly after arriving on the island.

Watching Jurassic Park now and it's very uneven, but it's just good enough for me to be OK with the upgrade. I agree with those saying the HDR is relatively reserved; I expected a lot more from those greens when they first reach the island.

Am I the only one seeing a lot of subtle reddish posterization in the dark areas of the frame in TLW? It seems to have started after they got to Isla Nublar. I think the worst moment so far was Ludlow’s face in the scene when Roland was telling him not to set up camp. It was so bad that it almost looked like red push on a faded film print.

I agree. Grain is much more noticeable in TLW than JP. I was actually surprised at how good JP3 looked. Heck, I thought they all looked pretty great. I don't mind grain but TLW is a bit much for my tastes, I was fine with JP though.

JP & JW are head and shoulders above the others as far as movie/story quality goes. I really doubt I'll watch TLW or JP3 again.

A different DP who prefers to shoot in harsher lighting and different film stock choices will do that.

Jurassic World looks fantastic. Jp3... doesn't. Need to get to JP and TLW soon.

I'm almost finished watching The Lost World now and I think it looks better than JP. Fine details seem much more apparent, black levels are great and so is the HDR. I would have liked a more grainier picture though. I'm not an expert on how this movie should look but I'm very much satisfied with how this 4K transfer turned out to be.

I even enjoyed the movie itself despite it has always been my lowest ranking JP film.

Wasn’t the DP of JP quoted as saying it was shot on a fine grain film stock that ‘hardly had any grain at all’? I thought I’d read that somewhere, so I wasn’t expecting much in the way of film grain on the new UHD.

That 35mm rip is too washed out and colour-drained. I guess they didn't colour correct it to match the projected image. The actual look of the prints is something like this -

JP_35mm the gate extract.jpg

The bottom colour instantly makes it look like a 1993 photochemically timed film print. I have vivid memories of watching movies on film and the blockbusters looked vivid and warm, with a golden tone, like the above photo. It feels old because modern movies don't use such warmer colour temperatures anymore. Even if they do it doesn't feel as organic because of digital grading. I know most daylight photographs from the 1990s that we have in our home (all shot on 35mm of course), were also developed with this same warm, golden tone.

This still shows how the CG is of a poor, less-detailed and softer quality than the rest of the live action elements in the shot. In motion it does not look as bad. This is because both in the film prints and in the 3D version, the scene is not nearly as bright. The darkness and deeper shadows hides the poor resolution CG model and blends it well with the background.

I guess it could have been worse, however I’ve been waiting for a reference copy of JP1 for years as the BD was so-so and the 3D BD was a DNR fest, so I skipped that too. I’m not sure if its born out of incompetence at Universal or of penny pinching, I’d say a bit of both, since Universal have always been about putting in the “least amount of effort possible” for its home releases since its DVD days. Ive never been much of a fan of how JP looks on home formats. To me it always had a kinda washed-out look and had poor contrast. Its funny how this release can be botched, however Apollo 13 gets a respectable treatment, being a film which is only 2 years younger.

I’m curious about how the CGI shots were delivered and at what resolution. If there was ever a restoration, could the CGI be “re-done”? I presume the CGI shots were rendered and then dumped onto an intermediate of some kind?
