Nah. Not having this Scream 2 slander.
Scream 2 had several fantastic, logical ideas that built upon the first movie like a sequel should. The opening in the theatre is downright brilliant (although I can't stand Jada Pinkett Smith) and the addition of the 'Stab' franchise increases the meta level in a clever way. It takes the characters and puts them in a new location, college, paying homage to Horror movies like Splatter University among others from the 80's. They brought back Cotton Weary and more importantly Liev Schreiber in an fun way to be the perfect red herring. There's not only one of the best chase/suspense scenes in Slasher movies but there's three of them, Cici's death, Gale in the sound studio and of course the cop car escape scene. They play on and subvert the whole boyfriend is the killer angle really well. They had the giant balls to kill the first movies' most beloved character half-way into the movie. The character of Joel was great fun, and it's pretty original to see someone in a Horror movie just say "**** this I'm out" and leave never to be seen again. Lastly, the motives are both strong in different ways. Mickey's motive is perfect for the secondary killer as he's just a deluded whacko being manipulated by Mrs. Loomis who is out for good old classic revenge. I don't for the life of me see how any fan of the first can't enjoy the second one just as much. It's only a "rehash" in the sense that Ghostface is trying to kill Sidney again, but then what else would a SEQUEL to Scream be? Ghostface learning to fly a plane? |

Not sure how true this is, but it seems to me like a large majority of the fans who prefer Scream 4 over 2 are the younger fans and Scream 4 was the first Scream movie they saw in theaters. For me, I saw the first movie in theaters when I was 18 and I will NEVER forget the energy in the theater the next year seeing the second one. It was a packed house and the energy was palpable - the success of the first one had made the sequel a must see event and I can still remember how over the moon excited I was to see it. Keep in mind, those were the days before Reddit and Twitter spoiled the whole damn movie before release. Scream 5 is the strongest sequel since 2 for me, and honestly, there’s a part of me that feels the two are even tied. I can’t wait to see what the filmmakers have up their sleeves for 6 and beyond! It’s so wonderful to see this franchise hot again and back on top for the first time since the late nineties. |

Scream 2 feels tired. Scream 4 feels fresh and it feels like time away from the franchise invigorated Wes. The movie has bite, while Scream 2 feels stale and the resolution hackneyed. |

And for me Scream 4 is the outlier because of the ugly cinematography (which makes it look drastically different from the other movies to the point that it doesn’t feel like the same franchise), not to mention the misplaced sitcom-like humor. I’m not saying that Scream 3 didn’t have comedy, but that still feels way more in line with the first two movies than Scream 4 does. I’m sorry, but no character should be cracking jokes as they are brutally slaughtered - that’s Scary Movie territory. Wes should have recognized and corrected this, sorry. Scream 4 leaned too heavy into the same movies it was supposed to be spoofing, and for that reason alone it failed. I will say though I love everything with Sidney - Neve is always fantastic and Sidney has been the one constant through all five movies. |

Oh no, a character in a Scream movie made a joke in a tense situation where they are in certain jeopardy? Scream 4 is a slick looking film from what I remember, arguably the best looking film since the original. Craven's craftsmanship had grown in the intervening 15 years. |

And while the Scream films have always had comedy, name one death in the first two films where the character said a one-liner or made a joke as they were being stabbed to death like Robbie and Perkins did. That was unacceptable. |

“No, please don't kill me, Mr. Ghostface! I want to be in the sequel!” And really, I don't care about the believability of someone cracking a joke when they're in danger. It's a movie. And a movie intended to satirize the slasher genre. |

You seem to be REALLY angry that people don’t like 4. That’s fine that you liked it but why are you so angry at the people who didn’t? To call other fans “buffoons”? |

I like 5 a lot, but best sequel? No way in hell. Scream 2 is head and shoulders above 5. 4 and 5 are close. I'd put 4 just a bit above it. Scream 3 is last but even then I don't hate it, it just doesn't rise to the level of the others.

Um, I’m not really worked up. I’m replying calmly without resorting to name calling like you so you seem to be the one who needs some fresh air. Not sure why you’re so combative.

Jenna Ortega made the opening watchable. If Melissa Barrera tried to do the opening crying scenes it would've been so bad. |
