Finished watching JP III.

Wasn't very impressed with the PQ. It looked quite dull and flat to me, with muted colors and a rather soft and hazy look at times. Some shots were particular soft like one of Laura Dern at the beginning and another of Sam Neill when he has just got out of the plane after landing on the island. Also the reflections of sunlight on persons and objects seemed very low contrast to me, with little to no highlight details present. This was noticable during the scenes in the plane before it crashes for example, many of the jungle scenes in the second half but also when Sam Neill holds the bag with eggs outside the window later on.

I saw this in the theater back in 2001 but obviously have forgotten what it looked like. I wonder if this UHD presentation is representative of the theatrical screening?

I still love the movie itself though, I would put this one in second place before TLW and JW. That bird cage scene with the pteranodon is great.

You sound like a console gamer but pc people get way better copies so you bash them. We want 4k it says 4k but many are 4k very false advertising. But hey being pro consumer is hated these days but i will not join the hip club of anti consumer practices.

Sadly, it looks like we'll never truly get a "good" transfer of the first Jurassic Park. Those UHD screenshots from CAH don't look like a step forwards or backwards from the VC-1 2011 1080p disc or the MVC 2013 3D disc, but rather a step sideways. Neither one of them are ideal. If I didn't know any better, I'd say they just used the same exact DNR'd 4K "remaster" as the 3D version...

We have a ‘good’ transfer. We just don’t have an ‘excellent’ one.

I have to say I watched the trailer scene from TLW last night and into the next scene and damn that looks good. I was very very impressed with the PQ.

JP3 has always been treated as a step-child of the franchise in the home video department. The DVD and Blu-ray were sub-par and it seems the UHD is even a step down from that. It seems they just want people to forget the film exists, by pushing them away with poor releases on home media.

I love the film and it looked as sharp as most 35mm films back then. The film stocks had improved since 1993. It also sported a warm, golden look throughout, like the previous two films. The mist-filled scenes were blueish, (not pink) and had a slight purple push. The skin tones were always tanned and healthy, not pale pinkish as on the DVD and 2D BD.

Does the JP3 UHD look exactly like this screenshot below, on your TV?

Okay, hear me out, maybe Jurassic Park could use a regraining pass.

Wouldn't trust Universal to do it, though.

Watched JP1. Clearly Universal put very little effort towards this release. It’s not all bad but it’s mostly disappointing. I definitely prefer it over the BD but that’s not saying much. Oh well, at least I onky paid $30 for the set.

That's not the JP III I saw multiple times in the theater back in 2001.

I remember it looking rather "bleached".

Not sure how anyone can seriously think the 2011 Blu-Ray looks "the same" as the UHD. The UHD isn't Sony quality but it blows the doors off that Blu-Ray, at least on my TV. The colors are much richer, it doesn't have the sharpening and other issues from the Blu-Ray. Going back to it after looking at the UHD shows how bad it is, and the UHD is a definite improvement, even if it's not perfect by any means.

I've a feeling this may have already been answered but I can't find it.

Just been mooching around my local HMV and had a look at a Jurassic World case. The back lists Dolby Vision. Is this a whoopsy on Universal's part of does JW (and the other 3) have DV?

It’s a whoopsy. There’s no Dolby vision on any of them. Just hdr10

Yep, that's the "black crush" issue I mentioned in my write-up, it makes the transition into black harshly delineated and posterised instead of a nice smooth roll-off, and it has this weird red tint to it (seen it before on other Uni titles like Van Helsing and Compton). I still think TLW looks gorgeous overall but as the movie progresses the crush graduates from a minor annoyance to a proper PITA because there are so many more dark scenes. It's there on JP3 as well, and unfortunately JP3 also had the exact same overweening "management" to the grain that JP1 has, so JP3 basically combines the worst aspects of JP1 and TLW's respective UHD transfers. It's funny how a different movie shot on different stocks by a different DP can end up with the exact same issues in the transfer.

Kaminski noted that the stocks he chose for TLW were virtually "grainless". But, for whatever reasons, TLW's 4K transfer escaped the processing that was wrought upon JPs 1 and 3, so ironically enough it's actually the grainiest of all three. NOT that the grain is overbearing or always in your face, it's just got a really pleasing sense of filmic texture to it and doesn't look overtly smudgy and false like those other two.

What a night and day experience Lost World is compared to JP1. Nothing bothers me more than boxsets witch fluctuating PQ from movie to movie.

I thought JP1 was good in closeups, clearly more detail and a higher resolution but the wide and distant shots were rough. The colour a little washed out overall with only really the clothing and jeeps looking rich, the scenery was underwhelming.
