I understand the disappointment with Jurassic Park. There's really no excuse for such heavy DNR at times. I'm not sure why they didn't push the HDR more but I assume it was out of respect for the original photography; if so, hard to complain, and I won't pretend to know how the movie should look. This is very much a Batman Begins situation in that it's an upgrade, but there are baffling technical shortcomings that relegate this top-tier movie to a very mid-tier transfer. Shame.

Some pics of a JP3 release print. They might not be 100% accurate but they give an idea as to the general look of the 2001 film - JP31.jpg JP32.jpg Jp33.JPG JP34.JPG JP35.JPG Don't judge the sharpness of the image from these frames as they were taken with a very poor quality camera and an operator who obviously does not know how to focus properly. The black areas in the print would have much more detail and brightness due to light from the film projector bulb. Last edited by Riddhi2011; 05-25-2018 at 04:36 PM. |

I seem to remember someone posting here something about some shots being 1K and others were 1.5K? Or was that the resolution of the scanned plates only? Not entirely sure. Given the high resolution of UHD and the low resolution nature of the CGI shots I'm guessing the best way to go about it would have been to not use the filmouts of those shots, but instead use ILM's original digital master (providing those still remains archived somewhere), upscale them to 4K and then grade those shots to match the other shots in the scene. At least going by the photos of printed magazine pics provided by VickPS in this post https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=2633 there clearly appears to exist a higher quality version of these shots in some place or form than what we've been offered on the UHD. |

I watched The Lost World last night and liked what I saw. The detail can be rather good and definitely a step above JP. I did spot a very tiny bit of ringing or EE in several scenes, but not a big issue. The HDR seemed applied nicely and the overall color saturation seemed well done and what I would expect.
As for the black crush, do you guys have some exact time stamps because nothing really stood out to me. I mean there are a lot of dark sequences, but I don't always expect to see "great" shadow detail on everything I watch either and did the Regular BD suffer from the same? |

It's not about "great" shadow detail HH, it's about the black being rolled off in such a way in the HDR grade that it creates a very hard, "posterised" looking transition between light and dark. Universal have applied their standard HDR black crush to several UHDs and some react way better than others.
Malcolm in the high hide is one such example, I mean the whole high hide sequence itself is one example but his close-up just before he rappels down was a big standout for me. On the BD the graduation into darkness on his face, down onto his jaw line, is smoothly handled from light to dark but on the UHD the brightness just kinda 'stops' and this mass of darkness takes over, along with a fetching red tint to his face. It's tough to describe and even tougher to get a photo of (I've tried), it's the sort of thing that once you see you can't unsee. If the mapping is lowering the APL anyway then the effect may well get swallowed up by the darker looking image, but at the full brightness curve for ST2084 it just looks wrong. And yes, those high hide shots have ALWAYS looked like ass in general, that's not my problem here. I'm saying that they look even more assy, along with several other darker scenes in the film. |

![]() The saturation is because it's in the middle of a lightning flash, it only looks like that for a few frames. Also reposting some shots as my image host seems to have died, UHD and then regraded: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I think saying "nothing looks 4K' is an overstatement, but for the sake of argument, fine. You're right. But it would still at the very least look like a very good Blu-ray, while the existing Blu-ray looks like a DVD. So still an upgrade. Last edited by imsounoriginal; 05-25-2018 at 06:40 PM. |

So, do they plan on reviewing this set or what? Because I'm buying it today and so long as the 1993 original isn't edge-enhanced to death and washed out in cold blues as it has been with the DVD/Blu-ray releases, I'll be relatively satisfied. Still, I'd like to know what I'm sinking my money into.
