And the award for most inconsistent and frustrating 4K set goes to this. 3 is possibly the worst 4K I own. What a stinker...

Kind of hard judging it by looking at a picture on my phone.

The high hide, you know? You go up high, then you hide!

It's when Malcolm's daughter gets scared by the baby Rex and she pleads to get out of there, so Malcom and Eddie take her up to the top of trees in the cage thingy that gets lifted into the trees by a winch attached to the jeep. Is that clear enough? Just explaining this thing is torturous enough.

T2 may have been DNRd to death. But people are so butthurt about it, they won't acknowledge the strengths that it does have.

Grain or no grain, T2's UHD at least looks better than films like JP3, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Legacy, etc etc.

Better in the way that a punch in the face is better than a kick in the babymakers, sure. But both still hurt.

My butt still hurts indeed, even after having sold it a long time ago.

Exaggerated by the camera. Overly saturated tvs with quantum dots will do this to a camera. The same way an OLED gives a fake blue tint to cameras as well that isn't there in person.

I’ll take T2 over 3. At least it has color fidelity and contrast. JP3 looks like an up converted DVD with HDR.

Sure:

The saturation is because it's in the middle of a lightning flash, it only looks like that for a few frames.

Also reposting some shots as my image host seems to have died, UHD and then regraded:

Thanks man, even the non-regraded shot of Ellie and Grant from the Uni promo material looks better than the UHD, see below. Note the framing as well, more info on all four sides (not just the removal of the 1.85 mattes) in the promo shot whilst maintaining the 1.85 aspect and the geometry's different too. Christ on a bike...I'm starting to think that Universal have indeed just repurposed the old transfer, or least an iteration of it before it was actually turned into the old SDR 1080p master.

@Geoff, I've been screaming on top of my lungs for so many years that the framing is cut off a lot from the laserdisc and of course the 35mm. But I found out that the full width was never projected onto the screen and was hidden by the film gate. So, I'm a bit more forgiving of that aspect. The full wider framing indeed looks beautiful and better composed than the tighter cropped framing, though.
And then I've also repeatedly talked about the colours, even the 3D promo material from 2013. Remember, in another thread (or was it this one) I demonstrated how you could tweak the colours, gamma, contrast and brightness of the 3D version and get a bright, beautiful looking image across the board? You liked that post.

Now of course we cannot really say whether they did scan the new films from the negative. As far as I am aware, there has been no official confirmation that parts 1-3 were scanned in 4K.
By "scan from the negative" they could just be talking about 2K and then upscale. These could indeed be from the original scan elements that were then downscaled to 1080p for the DVD and Blu-ray.
Another thing you'll see is that all the framing choices of the 2D BD are kept, whilst ignoring the bigger framing of some of the scenes from the 3D version.

For example, the lunch time discussion scene.
Remember how in the 3D version, with the overhead shot of all the members sitting, there were small screens fixed at four corners of the room with the word "Future Attractions" appearing in three screens? In the 2D Blu-ray, the words were partially cut off by a tighter frame. The 3D had corrected that by including all the letters within the frame, which a proper composition would do. Guess what, in the 4K disc, the words are cut off again and in the exact same proportion as the 2D BD.

When the T-Rex comes out and roars, the 3D framing was 1993 projection accurate, with there being more image on the right side of the frame after the second explorer. In the 2D BD and the 4K, the framing is pushed to the left, resulting in black bars intruding on the left side due to an artificial panning of the shot done in the computer in post (the original background plate was a stationary shot). And the second car is almost threatening to be cut off at the tail.

I'm inviting a friend over and we're watching Jurassic Park tonight. I'll finally get to see what I think of it.

Now, I'm not that big into picture transfers. I'm a guy who can sit through the Tremors Blu-Ray without any fuss (though I'd buy a remaster of that one in a heartbeat). So I'm sure I'll think it's fine or whatever. But I can and do appreciate a really good transfer that looks like the original film.

I really wish Universal would get it's act together with remastering their catalog titles. I know they were notorious for releasing lazy old HD masters on Blu-Ray and filtering them, but the expectations for a premium 4K format are different and I was hoping they'd step up their game.

It's a good looking movie, technically-and-professionally speaking. I was never a big fan of its cinematography aesthetic—the extreme teal.

You mentioned the framing before, Riddhi? You don't say!!

It just never bothered me before, but looking at that promo shot above makes me want to see that version in all respects (colour, framing, lack of shoddy "grain management"). Not the 2D BD, not the 3D BD, not the UHD, but the version promised in those promo caps of the new transfer. Instead we've got a variety of versions all being ****ed up in their own special ways. Thatsa Universal, folks!
