I watched about a good hour of JPIII last night before going to bed and its not as bad as some have made it out to be. I honestly didn't think it was by any means a bad transfer. It's just not a good looking movie (cinematography wise) but the 4K for the most part was sharp and detailed with some good use of HDR.

Given some opinions on the transfer I was honestly expecting much worse.

Here's the thing.

Since getting this new OLED everything is such a drastic improvement, especially UHD's. I feel like I jumped from VHS and I didn't think our previous display was that bad. It wasn't. OLED is just that good.

I've read through some of this thread and there are some complaints about the quality of the movies. I just started JP and it looks really good. The initial dinosaur scene does show that the CGI hasn't aged well. Perhaps there could be more detail, but to my untrained eye this is looking pretty damn fantastic.

Maybe I need to watch more movies for better comparisons.

Wait until you get used to watching stuff on your OLED, our brains love to normalise things so check back on JP in a few months.

Yep. I sampled JW and thought it sounded a bit thin. I think the original blu-ray was approx. 5400. I remember it sounding great. Why would they do this? So the best looking 4k disc gets the weakest audio. Can't have it all, right Universal?

It just never bothered me before, but looking at that promo shot above makes me want to see that version in all respects (colour, framing, lack of shoddy "grain management"). Not the 2D BD, not the 3D BD, not the UHD, but the version promised in those promo caps of the new transfer. Instead we've got a variety of versions all being ****ed up in their own special ways. Thatsa Universal, folks!
The original print colours look gorgeous to say the least. And as you were wanting the full width, here's the entire frame for you.

Oh and Laura Dern looks far prettier in full frame 35mm glory!

Universal's continued use of DNR makes me sceptical of a non-dnr version of "The Big Lebowski" UHD.

Hi there! I’m posting here for the first time in a loooong time. I’ve only just recently upgraded to 4K equipment, that being an LG OLED 55” TV (2016 model), an Xbox One X, and an Apple TV 4K. I’ve bought several films recently on 4K Blu-ray but haven’t really dove into watching them in the format. I bought the JP 4K set but I’ve also realized that I already own 4K digital copies of JP and JW on iTunes since they automatically upgraded my HD versions to 4K and those films I care more for than TLW/JP3 (which I still have on BD). I haven’t opened the set yet and I’ve been reading the negative reviews here. Am I going to be missing out on much if I return the set?

I still have Gladiator 4k and The Dark Crystal 4k in queue before cracking open the JP 4k movies. I'm thinking of watching the horrible Predator bd before JP1 just to make it look reference quality

By "scan from the negative" they could just be talking about 2K and then upscale. These could indeed be from the original scan elements that were then downscaled to 1080p for the DVD and Blu-ray.
I really don't see how. The previous 2D master looked old already back when the first BD appeared (wasn't it a DVD master?), and has there ever been a known case of them saving and going back to a pre-messed-up source after a master was already completed, especially after that many years? I think even Patton and The French Connection had to be rescanned for the BD re-releases and that was just a few years, JP would have been what, 15 years or something like that?

Some more things pointing to it not being an iteration of the old master:
-It doesn't happen that much because most of the finest detail is gone along with the finest grain, but there are some instances of sharpness/detail that doesn't survive a downscale-upscale test.
-The geometry is different.
-The film dirt is different.
-I believe I already posted some examples of the framing being different.

I have the LG C7 from 2017, and using Jurassic Park I compared by flipping AVR inputs between the BD and UHD.

The UHD is definitely darker, but seems more naturally lit, instead of the overly-bright look of the BD. Sometimes detail is a smidge harder to see, but for the most part it's just under a darker shadow, the detail is still visible if you look. Colours seem better and more natural as well.

The helicopter flight to the island is more appealing to me because it so bright inside that chopper on the BD. The framing is higher, I think, in places.

The computer graphic and animatronic dinosaurs were really improved! The daytime lighting doesn't get that washed-out plastic look in the dinosaur reveal scene. The nighttime lighting during the t-rex jeep attack is great as well; properly dark in the sky and the inside of the cars no longer looks like it is lit by stage lights. To my eyes the lighting on the CG dinosaurs matches the scenes way better on the UHD than the BD.

I understand this isn't what was shown in theatres, and I want them to do better, but it's by far the best I've ever seen it and I'm really excited about that. The cost wasn't out of hand for myself: Best Buy had the pack on for $65, Amazon had it for $50, with BB price match policy I walked out paying only $46. The packaging also includes a $15 discount off a Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ticket with Cineplex. The local Cineplex is my preferred theatre and I was already planning on going to see Fallen Kingdom. So we are at $31 total or $7.75 per film, and I haven't even hocked my old BDs yet.

So... Is this accurate?

JP 1... Not as good as it could be but a step up from the BD but has Black Crush?

JP 2... Overall better than the BD but not as good as it could be, also with Black Crush?
JP 3... Better than the BD
JP4... Better than the BD

Those screen shots just brought back something I have been wondering about for a long time. I remember getting the VHS of Jurassic Park when it came out and feeling cheated because it did not contain two scenes I had clear memories of seeing in the theatre. The first one actually showed Ellie grabbing the prehistoric plant as the jeep goes by at the beginning and the second was the first dinosaur the group sees after arriving in the park dropping branches onto the Jurassic Park jeep hood.

Where could I have gotten the idea that these scenes existed? Were they in promo clips or something? Or was I totally crazy as a kid?
