Demon 79 is very good, it’s a shame Brooker never really managed to realise his plans to get new talent across the board to handle different episodes because some of the strongest stuff from the Netflix seasons have co-writers involved.

I have a feeling Demon 79 is testing the waters to move to a broader horror themed anthology series under the Red Mirror bracket, it’s kinda become clear that Brooker is a bit wary how thin the show has become spread (although using about 5 different ideas on Joan is Awful probably hasn’t helped). Shifting to a more open ended series concept can maybe shuffle the creative juices a bit more although it’ll be interesting what’s going to be the defining thread that separates it as it’s own thing over other horror anthologies.

I mean the whole show has had horror elements, but clearly Demon 79 is going in an entirely different direction as the rest of the series. It’s clearly defining itself as something separate from the rest of the season even if it’s just a move away from tech-based machinations, science fiction speculation and contemporary commentary (even though it still has the latter).

I'd say Mazey Day is just as far out there as Demon 79.

It is, but it’s also probably why it’s been so badly received compared to the rest of the season.

Mazey Day is like a Night Gallery episode wedged in between two Twilight Zone's.

I really liked this season - I thought it was the most consistently good batch of episodes in awhile. I didn't think there was a stinker in the bunch, and I was glad that they are branching out a bit. I don't think I've binged a whole season of this show in one night since Season 1, yet I did here.

I'm surprised by some of the negative reaction I have seen out there, because I definitely enjoyed them - I look forward to more.

It’s another BM episode that’s built on stupidity.

[Show spoiler]These two guys are key assets in a multi-billion dollar space program. Their well-being being key to the mission, that extends to the safety of their replicas on earth and their loved ones. So round the clock non-invasive security systems would be a must. And of course there’s the question about why use humans in space with replicas on earth at all when they could just reverse it and use replicas in space instead.

[Show spoiler]It is briefly touched upon in the opening of the episode, Harnett’s character briefly touches upon the need of the human element to the mission, but more importantly Aaron Paul’s character struggles to cut the log putting info to grip highlighting the replicas don’t quite have the strength to match their human counterparts. The security part I suppose you’ve just got to go with, either nativity of the time matched with the freedoms each family desires.

[Show spoiler]Paul’s character says he’s not used to his grip yet when cutting the log, suggesting the strength issue is nothing more than being part of an initial temporary adjustment period rather than being a permanent state.

[Show spoiler]When he says that, they're already two years into the mission (with another 4 to go). You have to assume it's not temporary if it's still a problem 2 years in.

They're just astronauts... When astronauts go for extended stays on the ISS, for instance, are they known to have security details for their family on earth? Why would NASA assume a cult leader might do what he did in this episode. The episode is also set in an alternate 1969. We don't know how many missions like this have happened before or if NASA was justified in not thinking about murderous cult leaders in that America.

All in all, I loved this season. I had never seen a Black Mirror episode before and only just got into season 6 because a friend was adamant I'd love this season. He wasn't wrong. One of my favorite episode is the one most people seem to hate with a passion (Mazey Day). I liked most episodes in equal measures, for different reasons. "Mazey Day" was just a lot of fun.
[Show spoiler]The moment the paparazzi get eaten by Mazey, I have to admit I cheered. And I think the humor and the transformation scene were a nice homage to John Landis.
A lot of fun too were "Joan Is Awful"
[Show spoiler](Salma! and that cameo from Michael Cera)
and "Demon 79"
[Show spoiler](the Boney M demon was hilarious and Anjana Vasan did a great job of navigating the line between serious and absurd)
. "Beyond the Sea" was a good drama with a nice twist. The acting was top notch (Aaron Paul especially, but Kate Mara was amazing too, as always). The only episode that I felt dragged on a bit was "Loch Henry".
[Show spoiler]The final twist was a bit daft and tonally inconsistent, especially when we see the videotape of the mum dancing...

Yet language used in the episode suggests otherwise.

It’s not like for like.
[Show spoiler]In this episode both the replicas and the chairs they use in their houses to link are key capital assets. Not to having measures in place to safeguard those expensive assets, particularly when they don’t seem to be able to replicate the replicas is highly unlikely. As noted, it’s just something the writers just want the viewer to go with and not think about too deeply.

The tonal shift was quite unexpected but in the end it worked.

Season six felt more like Inside No 9 than Black Mirror.

Watched the first two episodes and they felt like an absolute painful chore to watch, heck, I've paused the second one as it's so dang boring.

The trailer admittedly did not look good to me, but this is far worse.

I really enjoyed season 6. This seems to be a somewhat unpopular opinion, but Loch Henry was actually my favorite episode of the bunch. I'm a sucker for small/remote town locations and murder mysteries, so it was right up my alley.

I've finished watching season six and honestly it wasn't dystopian at all, it was more of a collection of corny drama with some crappy true crime.

Netflix has lost their mind.

Compared to the murder mysteries I've seen on YouTube, it sucked so even that wasn't very good whatsoever.
