True story; I've been a PC gamer my whole life but my best friend and I rented a Playstation back when that was a thing so we could play Resident Evil. We had no idea you needed a memory card to save your game, since that wasn't a thing on PC, so we ended up staying up all night long to beat the game in one sitting.

That first dog through the window --

People make fun of the fixed camera angles, but they were truly effective.

Resident Evil hasn't felt the same since they did away with the fixed camera angles.

I miss the old days when games like Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and Resident Evil were all about atmosphere and tension. The deliberate camera angles had a lot to do with that. Something about it also makes those moments more memorable and striking.

Wow, I love reading that i'm not the only one here who got into zombies in the 90's because of Resident Evil and The Night of the living dead remake. That's how I became a fan too, with the first two Resident evil on ps1 and Savini's movie. What a great introduction to the genre it was!

By the way, for anyone who hasn't been keeping up with the Resident Evil games lately, the series has made a major comeback since the release of Resident Evil 7.

Being a Resident Evil fan hasn't felt this good since 1998, we’ve had Resident Evil 7, Village (8), and fantastic remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3. It’s been a golden era for fans and a truly glorious time for survival horror gaming.

RE4>>> RE3, the RE4 remake was great. I definitely want to replay Village before part 9 releases.

I prefer the remakes of 2 and 3. I like 4, don't get me wrong, but the more action focus and cheesy Italian b-movie style just isn't as much "my thing."

RE7's first half was insanely good. Haven't played Village yet.

Dead Space remake is better than all of them, btw.

I'm sorry. What?

I've never seen this one but always wanted to though. One day.

Give me third person Resident Evil any day of the week. The remake of 4 is probably my favorite of the entire series. When it comes to survival horror though, I gotta go with Alan Wake II. There's nothing like that game. Hell, it single handedly made me buy a PS5 after being away from gaming for nearly 20 years.

Personally, I started losing interest in the series with Resident Evil 4.

Funny enough, most of my friends at the time, who had never cared much for Resident Evil or horror games, absolutely loved RE4. To me, it was basically an action game. It didn’t feel like Resident Evil then, and it still doesn’t today.

Resident Evil, for me, will always be the original PS1 trilogy, true survival horror with some action elements, not the other way around. Those games were clearly inspired by Romero’s films (including Night of the Living Dead, the very thread we are in!), and that influence was a huge part of their identity.

By the time RE4 through RE6 came around, that spirit had all but vanished.

Ain't this actually shorter than the original? Wonder if Savini also trimmed some stuff.

I don't know how the BBFC operates, but it might be a PAL DVD version they rated, which would be weird in this day of age.

Theatrical runtime
87 minutes and 56 seconds

Home video runtime (1993, PAL VHS?)
84 minutes and 34 seconds

Home video runtime (2001, probably the DVD)
84 minutes and 36 seconds

Home video runtime (2025)
84 minutes and 51 seconds

This could be reverted back as a 88 minute and 21 second runtime for a 23.98fps NTSC movie.

EDIT: It was rated 18 in the UK back in the day and even on DVD, but this extended cut is rated 15. Same as 28 years later.
Did the Brits get a soft spot for zombies?

It's possible! Some streaming services here do use sped-up versions.

I sure hope it's the more violent cut that was on the workprint.

Will be laughing my ass off if it's just more dialogue/extended scenes. Why are we getting a version with more gore now? I thought the gore was supposed to be gone.
