Are we talking about Martin Sheen dancing to the doors then going all Bruce Lee on his mirror? Or the flying chopper bit.

I thought the opening fight in Highlander was good. A nice WTF opening

While it's not my favorite in the series (but I can look back on it nostalgically now....) I remember being wowed at the theater by the opening of

I was just going to say that!!! It really was an incredible opening for me from a film making perspective. And Christoph Waltz could have not said a word the rest of the movie and I thought he still would've deserved that Oscar.

Saving Private Ryan. When it starts with Private Ryan crying over that grave and how it shifts to one of the most real and graphic battle scenes I have ever scene.

Some great choices there but a couple of others that need to be mentioned.
THE TRANSPORTER
THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS
TWISTER
They all set the mood for the rest of the movie.

I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned the 2009 Star Trek film. The action is all well and good but the scene really grips you as Kirk is being born. The music and the acting make me a bit misty everytime

Also, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring has a fantastic opening. It's epic at the start and then transitions to the tranquility of the shire seamlessly. Plus it also does a great job explaining a lot of important details to newcomers.

Great film openings listed, but the one movie that I think of whenever this question is asked is "A Shot in the Dark." The whole sequence is just brilliant and perfectly sets up one of my all time favorite comedies...Another one to check out is "The Great Race" with the rivalry between Tony Curtis (The Great Leslie) and Jack Lemon (Professor Fate) in the beginning moments- also I believe the movie still sports the longest pie fight on film...Tough to go wrong with Blake Edwards writing and directing...
