Quote:
This week, Collider's Steve Weintraub sat down with producer Roy Lee at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, and during the course of that conversation, Steve managed to drag a few updates out of Lee regarding Warner Bros.' perpetually-gestating adaptation of Stephen King's It. These updates are both reassuring and not-so-reassuring.

Let's start with the good stuff: Lee confirmed that the plan is for It to be two films, both of which will be rated R. The first film will focus on the "Loser's Club" half of the story (that's the portion of the novel dealing with the kids), while the second will pick up decades later, with the now middle-aged "Losers" reuniting to take on Pennywise The Clown in their old hometown. Interestingly, Lee notes that the films could eventually be re-cut into one film, to more properly mirror the structure of King's novel. All of that sounds good.

Now for the maybe-not-so-good news: Collider also reports that the film's current script has been written by Gary Dauberman*, and is a page-one rewrite of the Cary Fukunaga draft. That name may not be familiar to you, which is one reason I'm going to point out that Gary Dauberman is the guy who wrote Annabelle. Please do with that information what you will.

In neither particularly great or terrible news, Mama director Andy Muschietti is still onboard to direct.

The current plan calls for Muschietti to film both halves of It in the back half of 2016. No word on how they'll roll out the films (one per year? Six months apart? Alternating weekends?), but if I were a betting man I'd wager that the first one will arrive in the summer of 2017, or possibly around Halloween of that year.

Stay tuned for more on this as it develops. Continue to mourn the loss of Cary Fukunaga's It in the comments below.

* = Actually, they're reporting that the script was written by "Gary Doberman", but a quick trip to IMDb reveals that this is almost certainly a typo. This becomes doubly likely when you consider that they're also reporting Andy Muschietti as "Andy Muscietti". No shade, just clarifying.

Here's an idea, WB: Drop this awful-sounding remake idea, and just give us the 1990 miniseries on Blu-ray already. Preferably, 2xBD-50 with the widescreen and OAR 1.33:1 versions on their own discs. That has to be cheaper by several orders of magnitude, compared to funding a remake no one is asking for, and, with the current creative selections, wants to see.

I hope they're not making it R for the sake of it being R simply cause Deadpool was successful.

No. Anyone that has read the book knows that to be done right this project HAS to be R

There is no way this story would be done correctly without an R rating

No way. Unless you are just talking that insane kiddie pron finale (that they thankfully left out of the miniseries), no. I love the book, the original miniseries, and however the movie goes rating wise I don't care - as long as it is faithful to the book I'll love it too. They were faithful to the source on the miniseries. Sure they could definitely make the movie a hard R by graphically showing more stuff from the books, but that does not mean that if they choose not to, it won't be a faithful adaptation. The tale itself is what is important.

I mean I guess that's sort of true, but I feel like the brutality of stuff like
[Show spoiler]Beverly being beaten
and the disgusting, uneasy appearance of It's various forms like
[Show spoiler]the leprosy hobo offering blowjobs
would lose their power and make the movie less effective if they were toned down

But either way it's a moot point because it's getting an R rating, so it's all good!

I'm obviously extremely disappointed that Fukunaga won't be working on this because I love his visual style and think he's a pretty good writer too, but hopefully they still craft something great. I read the book for the first time back in October and thought it was amazing

Here's an idea WB: kick Andy Muschetti and Gary Doberman, Dauberman, whatever out of this project and bring Fukunaga back!
And yes, give us the 1990 miniseries on blu too

With the remake in the works think this could lead to the 1990 miniseries being put on Blu-ray?

I'm totally sure that Deadpool has absolutely nothing to do with it.

There would be no point doing a remake/re-adaptation unless it was with an R rating. As much as I like the mini-series, it does feel very much like a TV production and it's too watered-down. There's a lot of dark material in the book that wasn't touched upon.

I'm pretty sure they wanted to be rated R well before Deadpool was even successful.

The novel-to-film adaptation of Stephen King’s It has gone through a lot of difficulties to get to this point. The loss of director Cary Fukunaga last year caused a lot of consternation among fans as well as required a new script to be written. Not exactly something a studio wants to go through, I assure you.

But all of that is in the past and Pennywise the Clown will be coming to life in the near future as it’s been confirmed in a recent edition of 24 Hours Toronto that Canadian city will host the cast and crew between July 7th and September 6th, which is practically the entirety of the summer season.

Instead of Fukunaga, Mama director Andy Muschietti will be giving us his vision of King’s classic horror tale, which was adapted in a made-for-TV event back in 1990.

As of now, no cast has been confirmed. We’ll be keeping our ears open to see who “floats down here”.

No mention of the new writer. They're really using the guy who wrote Annabelle?

This was always going to be an R rated film. No way you could tone down a story with such graphic themes into a PG-13 (hell, the miniseries could easily be an R today due to the content shown).

Meanwhile, I'm not sure if this was mentioned but it looks like it will be one film now instead of two (Box Office Mojo only listed one film, that or Part 2 remains undated). I guess that Warner Bros. didn't learn the lesson from Winter's Tale that a long book cannot be condensed into a two to two-and-a-half hour film without losing large parts of the story (and It is an even bigger book than the near 700 pages of Winter's Tale).
